Anyone else still have to file their tax return?

Every year. I'm a serial procrastinator and every year I leave it to the last minute, why? I've never been late but just make it so difficult for myself. And every year I promise myself I'll do it in April and every year I'm sat here in January putting it off...

I always do mine in July.
I can't understand why people leave it so last minute.

I think the world is divided into two types of people:

People who just do stuff
People who procrastinate

I am in the second group, I just can't imagine thinking randomly in July, I'll do my tax return today six months early. I admire it but I find it baffling

LBOCS2 · 30/01/2023 21:08

I am a procrastinator. I married a 'just do it' person. I drive him insane with my prevarication over VERY SIMPLE TASKS, but it does mean that I submitted my tax return in July only two months after he nagged me to do it in the first place.

Mum2jenny · 30/01/2023 21:12

I use a very good accountant who starts to nag me in May every year. Generally it is submitted in good time.

Sometimes its not the person leaving it to last minute but circumstances. We have some clients whose accounts take ages and ages to complete going back and forwards with queries etc and by the time the accounts are finalised and a meeting had and approved etc its January. BUT yes some people can have everything they need on 6th April and just don't bother handing it over until 30th Jan.

WhereIsMyRollingPin · 30/01/2023 21:47

Did mine two weeks ago but only logged on on Saturday to pay. A pleasant surprise was that I don't owe anything and am substantially in credit for reasons I don't fully understand despite double checking everything from the past few years.

I know someone who does his on 25 December every year. He's not a Christian, actively avoids Christmas, and says its the perfect day to do it as he won't be interrupted.

Errolwasahero · 30/01/2023 22:15

I’ve just done mine. It’s deliberate; a tiny bit of ‘fuck you’ to them all. I have it all lined up and in order, it just takes me a little while to log it all and pay. I would have left it to tomorrow but I’m busy. I know it makes no sense, but it does make me feel a little bit better.

ACynicalDad · 30/01/2023 22:20

I couldn’t do it to myself, mine was done around May or June!

shufflestep · 31/01/2023 07:46

I've just paid mine and DH's bills, the accountant submitted them last night. I have promised to do better this year - I normally get everything to him by October, but messed up on this occasion!

Redcrayons · 31/01/2023 07:53

I submitted mine yesterday which is my personal worst. Blush
Ita a little side hustle. I’m mostly PAYE so it only takes an hour in total. I’ve no excuse except chronic procrastination.

Must do better.

EnrichedAtrixo · 31/01/2023 08:07

I submitted mine last night after realising I didn’t know my government gateway id or password. After a bit of faffing with my passport and driving licence, all done. It’s been in draft for a while until I realised yesterday I hadn’t added some bank interest.
Every year I tell myself to do it earlier….this is the first year I’ve done it completely on my phone.

MaverickGooseGoose · 31/01/2023 08:09

I've got to do mine tonight. Ffs.

whataboutsecondbreakfast · 31/01/2023 08:36

I did mine last week but I have accounting software that I update weekly - so it actually takes less than an hour to do the actual return as it's just copying the relevant figures into the relevant boxes!

DH never keeps on top of his paperwork and receipts and has a panic every single year Grin

Theteapotsbrokenspout · 31/01/2023 08:45

I submitted mine to my accountant in November, they were taken over last year and it appears the regular staff all left. They still haven’t submitted them, I have been chasing this up regularly, every time they promise they will be done in time, really fed up and now expecting a fine Angry .

User76765 · 31/01/2023 09:00

Well, in relative terms. The cash was there waiting and so I looked quite flush for a bit!

DogInATent · 31/01/2023 09:10

Filed on Friday, will pay later today - hoping a client payment will clear today, so that can just go straight back out again. I always leave it until January as that's a quiet month for me. All the basics are kept up-to-date quarterly, all that's left in January is checking mileage, bank interest, and other odds and ends that complete it.

Caught out this year by the SEISS tax payment. I'd clean forgot about that until prompted onscreen. It seems so long ago.

Until the local tax office closed a few years ago, one colleague always used to hand his in in-person on 31st Jan with a cheque. Just because he could.

mondaytosunday · 31/01/2023 10:27

I use an accountant and used to wait til January. Then she informed me that her January is working seven days a week very long days (after chasing clients for months), and that particular year she was ill with a serious illness (not cancer). So since then I try and send her everything by end of October. Still don't pay til last minute though!

Hubblebubble · 31/01/2023 10:29

It was my first year doing it. I'm really worried that I'll have messed up. Especially as they said I dont need to pay a penny back, which doesnt seem quite right as I earned (admittedly not much) over the 1000 free allowance.

CoffeeWithMyOxygen · 31/01/2023 11:21

I was very smug at getting mine done at the start of January, until I got to the end and found I owed back £1700 of child benefit. Ouch. Oh well, it’s a first world problem and we’re not claiming anymore!

The tax allowance is £12,750.
The £1,000 allowance is for something else.

Hubblebubble · 31/01/2023 14:14

@DogInATent thank you so much!!!

Oblomov22 · 31/01/2023 17:05

FFS my youngest brother who I haven't heard from for months phones this afternoon asking me to help him. Dh is furious. Didn't think to send a card for my 50th last week though.

AnnaMagnani · 31/01/2023 17:07

Did it today.

Now feeling v sad that I have no money.

Spent rest of day looking at my spending and electricity bill.

HellcatSpangledShalalala · 31/01/2023 20:13

Well I'm logging off for the night after a 14 hour day, still got 9 not submitted but they will have to deal with the fines!
