Anyone else still have to file their tax return?

Every year. I'm a serial procrastinator and every year I leave it to the last minute, why? I've never been late but just make it so difficult for myself. And every year I promise myself I'll do it in April and every year I'm sat here in January putting it off...

Every month I pay our accountants almost £200 to deal with all things tax and vat. They still haven’t submitted ours.

BarbaraofSeville · 29/01/2023 23:47

If I was an accountant, I'd have a sliding scale of charges where I charged about twice as much to anyone who sent in information less than a month before the deadline.

I do DPs for him and I did it over the Christmas holidays.

Snoopsnoggysnog · 29/01/2023 23:52

Yes me! I have all the info there but need to check a couple of things which I will do tomorrow. I’m feeling anxious that it’s not dine and annoyed that I’ve left it so late.

What’s a normal price for an accountant?
i am mainly PAYE so simple, but am landlord to one property and have a (small, not wildly profitable if ever profitable to be honest ) consultancy which includes bits and pieces of trusteeships, chargeable and pro bono advice etc
i pay £90 a month and he does it all in one go, mainly.
is that about right?

also I’ve been wondering as I filed yet another loss making year for my part time consultancy (covid still biting) where the insurances, website fees, registrations etc are more than the profit-
does HMRC ever get shirty about part time consultants being crap at making money? My accountant always deletes ££ from expenses total to compensate for my pro bono work - as if it were paid, which i thinks a bit mean- the expenses still exist even if I choose to charge low fees to people to be helpful (I just enjoy doing the work tbh)

but am I going to get in trouble?

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 29/01/2023 23:57

This is my first year and Government Gateway won’t let me in because it says my details are wrong. That would be my own name, date of birth and NI number, which is printed on every piece of correspondence I have from them. And the office doesn’t open until 8 tomorrow. Fuckers.

(I know I should have started earlier! I have all the info on a spreadsheet so I didn’t think it would take that long.)

ouch321 · 30/01/2023 00:05

I'll do it tomorrow.

Nice to find some other tax advisers on here! I have reviewed the last couple of our returns today, so will just need to send them out tomorrow and submit (hopefully) on Tuesday.

I wish people would get their info in sooner but it’s the same every year.

I've worked all weekend (as well as stupid hours for the rest of January) and I've got about 20 to review and send out today/tomorrow. About 5 that came in last week so they will be left until tomorrow. We are so incredibly short staffed it's been a very tough year!! The majority of our tax returns rely on partnership returns to be completed first (specialise in GP practices) which is what causes the delays with so many as there will be one doctor holding up the tax return for the rest of the practice, it's so frustrating!

Oblomov22 · 30/01/2023 07:48

I don't get why people do this to themselves. It does puzzle me. Please get it done today. Please.

In the past I've make people do it in December at the latest. When it's done they feel relief.

Have you thought about just doing it yourself? That sounds like a lot to pay for a relatively simple return and I assume the accountant has talked you through the approach in previous years so you know roughly how to do it.

I wouldn't pay over a grand for the tax return of a loss making consultancy myself and the landlord bit is easy enough

Finally submitted mine on Sat. I do this every bloody year, leaving it to the last minute.

This year I actually have a credit balance with HMRC but can’t find out whether they will use it automatically to pay my bill or if I need to make a payment 😬

IVFNewbie · 30/01/2023 08:12

I get an accountant to do mine=no stress.

Temporaryanonymity · 30/01/2023 08:19

Signed mine this morning, my poor accountant sent them at 6.32 so she must have had an early start!

Snugglemonkey · 30/01/2023 08:54

Done! Just submitted it. I really should do next year too. I am on maternity leave and so finished for the tax year. Probably won't though.

I'm in the same position. But after the crap I've had with them on trying to allocate a credit balance on the business to the business account I'd say they won't automatically apply it.

But, I'm not paying it until they give it back and will just say I assumed they'd use it as it's the most logical thing to do 🤷🏼‍♀️

TeeBee · 30/01/2023 09:05

You're all making me feel so guilty. Finally submitted all my details to my accountant last week. I'll be sending them a huge apology and a few bottles of gin for being so late with it.

CrystalTits · 30/01/2023 17:53

@welshpolarbear I got the twitch so I made a separate payment and will ask for a refund of the credit balance. Seemed like the least stressful option!

User76765 · 30/01/2023 17:54

I'm a chronic procrastinator with menopausal anxiety. I haven't done mine yet.

The tab has been open on my computer for the past week though..

Hellocatshome · 30/01/2023 17:56

Wow I actually managed to finish work at the normal time today. Bit because the tax returns are all done but because I am waiting for accounts to be finalised. Tomorrow will be a busy day.

Whatmarbles · 30/01/2023 17:58

I always do mine in July.
I can't understand why people leave it so last minute.

I don’t blame you! I may have to do the same. Just so frustrating that they chase you for payment when you’re in credit!

I stuck to my guns so much with the business accounts (as I knew I was right and refused to pay as my account was £2500 in credit) that they sent the £1500 debt it to bailiffs! I didn’t even owe it and they owed me the £2500!

I held off though and eventually it got sorted a few days ago. Yet to receive a refund though.

definitely stressful!

I've just this second had someone send me details of their dividends/p60, wanting their tax return done for tomorrow Smile. This is after many many emails/voicemails chasing the info, it's only when I've emailed today to say we won't be submitting it and they will get a fine that they have they replied.

Whatmarbles · 30/01/2023 20:14

@HellcatSpangledShalalala my accountant is ace, has been with us since we built our business premises.
I like to do right by him.

soboredtonight · 30/01/2023 20:15

My dh is doing it tomorrow

Adviceneeded200 · 30/01/2023 20:58

4 left to do!

Ottil · 30/01/2023 21:03

<raises hand>

I'm usually good with admin, but I've got total overwhelm this year. Which is a bit like every other year tbh. DH did his two weeks ago to make me look bad Grin
