Tell me about period pants please

TattiePants · 17/01/2023 14:12

DD has just turned 12 and has started her period today. She’s keen to try period pants but there are so many brands to choose from that I don’t know where to start. What brand would you recommend, ideally ones that aren’t £30 per pair? Also, how many pairs would you recommend?

I keep considering these but then I think I'd probably need like 10 pairs and something to store them in as I wouldn't want to wash them with anything else or just do a wash with one or two in.. 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️

NotHooray · 17/01/2023 14:18

I have both the Uniqlo ones and the primark ones. Primark ones were £16 for 3 and work just as well as the expensive Uniqlo ones and are a more flattering design. Might be worth picking a pack up to see if they are right for your daughter?

BudgetBeatrice · 17/01/2023 14:21

Sainsbury's do some which are meant to be good.

I use Wuka and Cheeky Wipes ones and like them, but they're a bit pricier. I used to use modibodi but they were so expensive and, although they were hard wearing, they weren't as hard wearing as the other brands I use

Iwasntgettingasandwich · 17/01/2023 14:21

I have some from Cheeky Wipes and they do teen sizes. I only have 2 pairs but am going to buy more, I think 4 would be good. I think my pairs were about £12 with an offer. I love them, only been using them a few months but so much more comfortable, I chuck them in the washing machine and have had no concern about leaking.

Hohofortherobbers · 17/01/2023 14:21

Mine are tu sainsbury, love luna, I really like them, think they were around £10/pair. I have 3 pairs, could do with more. I wash them with everything else, not separated

mrsmacmc · 17/01/2023 14:21

LOVE LUNA period knickers (sainsburys or Argos) are great £10 a pair

BudgetBeatrice · 17/01/2023 14:22

I have really short, light periods these days and have five pairs which seems about right for me

VeggieSalsa · 17/01/2023 14:25

I have 6 pairs of Primark which is just about enough for me, but I have quite light periods for 3-4 days so would need more if heavier.

Mmr224 · 17/01/2023 14:25

I have love luna ones and they really are fab.. have about 10 black pairs. They recommend a cold rinse before washing. I do that and chuck I washing machine as I do a load.most days anyway. No issue washing with coloured load. They can take a while to dry, which is why I have so many. On heavy days i.might use 3 pairs, on.lighter days one during day and one at night.

TattiePants · 17/01/2023 14:27

Just looked at the Love Luna ones. My mum’s popping to sainsburys for me this afternoon so I’ll ask her to look for those. I have a large Primark nearby too so I can try that later this week.

DD came home at lunchtime so she’s currently snuggled up next to me with a hot water bottle feeling a bit sorry for herself.

I rarely have periods now as I have Depo injections but prior to that I used a Mooncup so never had to think about pants.

I have some Primark ones, they work fine. Only thing to be aware if that the three park had three different absorbencies as indicated on the sewn in label which I hadn't noticed

greenacrylicpaint · 17/01/2023 14:27

uniqlo for heavy flow.
if you choose other pants make sure the waterproof part has good coverage in the front area.

tbh they are a total gamechanger.

greenacrylicpaint · 17/01/2023 14:29

and if dd struggles with period pain - giver her a paracetamol and take her to the gp if that doesn't help.

TattiePants · 17/01/2023 14:29

Obviously it will depend on her flow but she’s out of the house for 8 hours on a school day. Would one pair generally last the whole time?

I use Sainsbury's ones, and using heavy absorbancy for my one heavy day, I don't need to change it when at work the whole day. No issue with washing with normal coloured load. Perhaps keep the lighter pairs in a different drawer, in case you grab the wrong pair out in a rush on heavier day (as I've done!).

beeswa · 17/01/2023 14:36

My daughter uses modi bhodi shorts . She has day pants and night pants . Honestly she is autistic and this has been perfect for her . Never leaks . Doesn't have to change at school , and completely comfortable .

She's also got swim wear. I have a refer a friend voucher if you want it , you get £15 off your first order . PM if you would like the code .

We tried others from primark and m &s but found they weren't as good.

Rebel2023 · 17/01/2023 14:37

These are decent
Do not pay that price though! Sign up where it says get a discount and wait, you'll get an email for BOGOF, or they often go down to about £8
Sizing is small

I have 2 levels and use the strongest for first couple of days and the medium for later days. On a really awful day I might pop a disposable pad on top of period pants and get rid of itafter 3 hours and use the pants then to get through the whole day and go home. She Should be fine with one set but I do have a spare pair in a tiny wet bag that I keep 7n my bag just in case. I should say I would have been changing tampons every 2 hours or so on a bad day though, so well beyond what is normal for many people.

What I do is put them in the wash alone and do a rinse cycle on cold with some dettol stuff. That rinsed virtually everything out of them and I can wash them with other stuff I just add and do a full wash cycle

CakeCrumbs44 · 17/01/2023 14:41

I have Wuka ones and Cheeky ones, they work really well and last all day. I usually put a fresh pair on at night or use washable towels at night as my flow is much lighter at night and they're cheaper and smaller than the pants.

OnceAgainWithFeeling · 17/01/2023 14:41

DD uses the cheeky wipes boy shorts. They’re brilliant. She puts a reusable pad in in the morning and takes it out int he afternoon to get a dull
day with one pair. Rinse with cold water annd wait a couple of days for enough for a small load and wash on 30o with no fabric softener. Really easy.

beeswa · 17/01/2023 14:43

We have 5 pairs of day ones and 5 pairs of night ones , I bought different colours to help my daughter know which one to use .

I rinse them out and then wash them with all our other clothes but not with fabric conditioner . And then air dry then . I do a wash every day , so there's always a night and day pair in the wash . She also will carry a spare pair in a little bag when she starts high school , so if she does come on during the school day she can pop the dirty ones in the bag and change into her period pants .

chocolateismyjam · 17/01/2023 14:45

I bought a few pairs each for me and dd from Modibodi. They had a sale on so were £8-13 a pair I think. Maybe check if they've got a winter sale on now?

They're great, really comfortable and no leaks. I'll probably buy more for dd at some point, not for me though as I've already got quite a few reusable pads and a cup which also work fine.

Andanotherone01 · 17/01/2023 14:47

I got DD11 some from M&S. A three pack for £22 and they have different absorbency levels. She is really pleased with them and feels comfortable in them. They don’t do sizes in age, so I got her size 6 and that works well

Deadringer · 17/01/2023 14:57

I bought some quite cheap on amazon and they seem good so far. They were called rovtop, 5 in a box for about 20 pounds. I bought a second box so dd has 10 altogether. She has sensory issues and they make periods so much easier for her to deal with. I do a dark wash most days so wash them in with other stuff, too much hassle to wash separately. I rinse them out if I felt they need it though.
