Tell me about period pants please

DD has just turned 12 and has started her period today. She’s keen to try period pants but there are so many brands to choose from that I don’t know where to start. What brand would you recommend, ideally ones that aren’t £30 per pair? Also, how many pairs would you recommend?

I keep considering these but then I think I'd probably need like 10 pairs and something to store them in as I wouldn't want to wash them with anything else or just do a wash with one or two in.. 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️

Why not? You're supposed to rinse them when you change and before you put them in the laundry basket. So it's not like you're washing your stuff in blood...

Obviously it will depend on her flow but she’s out of the house for 8 hours on a school day. Would one pair generally last the whole time?

I use three per day.

Deadringer · 17/01/2023 15:03

My dd uses 3 as well. One in the morning, then a change when she comes home from school, then a fresh one for bed.

That’s really helpful.

Modibodis are great. Dd uses boyshort style.

Beanbunnalapoo · 17/01/2023 15:08

I bought 2 x Modibodi and 2 x Next for my 12 year old, she says the Modibodi are the comfiest.

Lcb123 · 17/01/2023 15:09

I have from Marks & Spencer, have 4 pairs. has significantly reduced the amount of disposable products I use, although still use some.

SlipperyLizard · 17/01/2023 15:14

DDs like the ones from the junior Victoria’s Secret brand (Pink) - they come in boy short style & lots of colours (DD2 loves the camo!). We’ve tried primark but found them less good & they don’t always have them in.

DD1 (13) goes to school with a (disposable) pad in the period pants then takes it out part way through. She was sometimes getting leaks before that. I never really liked the reusable pads I had but I expect they’ve moved on so may look into that. DD2 (11) just uses the pants so far.

I bought some in Costco the other day but not tried them yet.

@beeswa , are you able to link to the specific modibodi shorts your DD uses? I have an autistic DD too. DD has M&S shorts, which they no longer stock.

TabbyM · 17/01/2023 15:19

Marks & Spencer ones are good, also recommend pads from Hey Girls and Lilah pads

reusable period products make fisposable ones feel like a con.

a reusable pad or period pants protect so much better/longer.

Velvian · 17/01/2023 20:15

Thank you @beeswa❤️. I've PM'd you (hopefully) 😅

gogohmm · 17/01/2023 20:26

I swear by modibodi. Excellent for period pants and just invested in highest absorbency for bladder leaks

Another one here who likes Cheeky Wipes period pants. Both myself and my teenagers use them and we all get quite heavy. They are so easy to use, easy to chuck in the machine (no pre washing needed) and they come up nicely afterwards. I wish we had had them when I was a teenager!! They are very absorbent and stay nice and dry during the day. My girls have five pairs each, they wear one pair a day then change at night. We are often all on at the same time (love how that happens!) so we just put on a quick wash as and when needed. Totally recommend them.

Ciri · 18/01/2023 09:10

Does anyone find they smell after a while? I've had modibodi ones for a couple of years and they've developed an odd smell even when completely clean and just out of the wash.

ChungusBoi · 18/01/2023 09:13

Sainsburys ones are fine. When she’s stopped growing it’s worth investing in Modibodi ones. They wear really well and are very comfortable.

You could soak and rinse out, then chuck in a bucket?

SBAM · 18/01/2023 09:16

I use the love Luna ones from sainsburys. I have about 8 pairs, I wear one in the day and one at night. Mine are mostly for backup though as I use a mooncup for the heavy days and only just the pants alone for the last 2 days.

Hill1991 · 18/01/2023 09:17

Marks and Spencer's ones are amazing and I had really heavy periods and they do different styles aswell

bellinisurge · 18/01/2023 09:27

I haven't noticed a smell on the Modibodis. We always air dry rather than tumble dry. Preferably outside on the line although that's not really feasible in winter.

Rockingcloggs · 18/01/2023 09:28

With the period pants, do they have to be close form fitting? I like my pants with a bit of room so will always size up. Will that create issues?!

SirVixofVixHall · 18/01/2023 09:30

My dd2 (15, has had periods for a year) had the Love Luna ones but they did leak a bit. Maybe I bought too light an absorbency? She uses those pairs now for very light days or when her period is due just in case.
Mainly she uses Modi Bodi, but I am going to try a few other brands. You can get ones that unclip at the sides which can be changed without having to take off trousers or tights, but she hasn’t tried them yet and usually finds one pair lasts until she gets home from school on a heavier day.
I have the Uniqlo ones and like them, so I am going to get her some too. Dd1 (18) also has a pair by Chantelle that she likes as they are really pretty.
I tend to buy them a new pair every now and again, so they both have quite a few now, probably around 8 or 10 pairs each. I think five or six is enough but they can take time to dry.

bellinisurge · 18/01/2023 09:31

@Rockingcloggs , close fitting is better in my opinion. Just for practical purposes.
