What has happened to Kit Kat’s???

honeyandbutterontoast · 17/01/2023 13:38

Bought a packet of 2 finger Kit Kat’s this morning, 9 of them in the pack I think.

So firstly, the packaging has changed. No idea why because you can’t recycle the new packaging at home 🙄

But then I realise it’s because they are smaller… I don’t have an old one to check this but I’m sure of it!

And they taste different. Maybe the chocolate is thinner but the ratio seems wrong and there wasn’t the little chocolate bit at the end before you get to the wafer.

Seriously? Is nothing sacred? Why would they meddle with a perfectly good coffee accompaniment :(

Great, that's kitkats off the (rapidly shrinking) list of chocolate worth eating then Angry Did you know they've discontinued Topic's now too? They'd already ruined them with palm oil so I had at least already grieved their loss, you'd think they'd put two and two together and realise people stop buying stuff because they make it taste crap though!

JarByTheDoor · 18/01/2023 12:24

I'd love to see the ingredients list of a chocolate bar from 15 years ago (or more) to now.

Crap ingredients isn't new. This site has some interesting wrappers.

A few years ago a lot of own brand and cheaper chocolate started using PGPR to offset lower cocoa butter, especially for coatings on bars. Now that really was horrendous. They didn't do it for long and now I rarely see it.

I bought a bag of the Kit Kat bites yesterday, there was a tiny sliver of wafer in the middle and the 'chocolate' was rank. Another one off the list

Never liked Kit Kat but I had a caramac the other day. Too sweet! Something used to catch at the back of my throat when I ate one but it doesn't now, but oh the sweetness.

Toblerone golden caramel is very Caramaccy, but at £4 a tad expensive, cheaper option is the Gold biscuit bars by McVities?
.
Sigh I do miss the proper Caramac.

TheDouglasChater · 18/01/2023 12:42

I remember back in the 90s being taught to 'suck' my tea through a KitKat like a straw, it was an amazing melty mess.

It would probably disintegrate within a second if I tried nowadays.

Those buying chocolate in Lidl, is it free from palm oil?

Delatron · 18/01/2023 12:44

I buy them because I don’t like them so won’t be tempted by them. Only the kids won’t eat them now so they must be bad..

georgarina · 18/01/2023 12:53

Yes! They used to be so nice and they're just bland and horrible now

frenchnoodle · 17/01/2023 16:58

While we are on the subject, I'll just mention WAGON WHEELS!

They used to be kinda big and kinda round...

Now they are kinda flat and kinda small with out much mallow or anything at all under that chocolatey stuff.

Yes! Wagon wheels are So much smaller now.
I don’t need to grin to get’em in”

I literally just bit into a KitKat and it was so wrong I threw it away. It had fallen off the correct shelf in the larder at home, and I wondered if maybe it was out of date and had been there a while but it wasn't. It just tasted chewy and disgusting. DH tried it (and he is far less discerning about chocolate) and agreed it was horrible.

And the new packaging looks like a year 7 graphics project.

Cadbury chocolate tastes waxy and nowhere bear as nice as it used to. Lindt is my favourite but agree it is expensive.

Then you need Werther's Original Caramelts in your life. Like Caramac but smoother and not as sweet. Aldi usually has them in where I am. They are also lovely melted onto hot pancakes.

I love dark mint Kit Kats, Tesco sell them. They have a yummy grown-up taste.

I love these too.

And they are low calorie (probably due to the small size and lack of chocolate everyone is talking about) so good for me this month as I started calorie counting.

sorrynotathome · 18/01/2023 13:44

Kit Kat straight from the fridge used to be my guilty pleasure. Now you couldn’t pay me to eat one.

sorrynotathome · 18/01/2023 13:45

All big brand chocolate is now made with palm oil and other crap. You’ll get a better taste going with supermarket chocolate.

Whatafool123 · 18/01/2023 13:58

This is a revelation! I thought it was just my taste buds changing or something. Kit Kats are grim now. So is it the addition of palm oil/fat that makes the difference or are there lots of factors contributing?

I have noticed that things like Roses, Celebrations etc I don't like any more. Have they changed too, or am I just getting more discerning in my old age?

mamabear715 · 18/01/2023 14:16

Oh, I wish I could share with all you young 'uns the taste of Rowntrees chocolate before it all got taken over & americanised.
Aero bars were unbelievably good, for example.. now they are tiny bits of choc flavoured plastic. :-(

Delatron · 18/01/2023 15:29

They’ve all changed. Roses are inedible now. I can just about manage a Quality street. I think it’s because they’ve all been bought by American companies (and we know how shit the chocolate is over there) and they’ve added palm oil? Something like that.

Lindt is better but I miss all the old Cadbury/Rowntree bars.

Delatron · 18/01/2023 15:30

Sorry just caught up and see everyone saying the same - American companies and palm oil! What a shame. Though good for my waistline.

MichelleScarn · 18/01/2023 15:40

Agree @Delatron I've never seen so many boxes of chocolates sitting untouched at work that have been handed in over Christmas from patients families, they usually disappear in seconds!

Delatron · 18/01/2023 15:42

Surely sales must have decreased?

JeanGabin · 18/01/2023 15:42

Got some minstrels yesterday for the first time in years. What a disappointment. Sugary, hardly any chocolate taste. Used to love galaxy chocolate

I loved the old Aero bars from my 1970s childhood, they literally melted in your mouth.

Shekissedagirlandshelikedit · 18/01/2023 15:52

I recently had a Twirl which seemed to taste the same, but Wispa bars are awful, they used to melt in your mouth and you could feel the bubbles, but it's just a hard lump of chocolate now, and half the size.

Margarita45 · 18/01/2023 15:59

Had one today. It was distinctively underwhelming. The only chocolates that have maintained standards are Milkybar and Galaxy.

I mean an actual milkybar or buttons, not those monstrosities that have fillings.
