What time does your 12 year old go to bed?

DS is 12 (13 in may) and I aim for bedtime/lights out at 9:30pm on a school night.

He claims this is too early (yes lots of his mates are still up which I reckon is driving this).

He gets up okish,7:30am wake up.

I know every child is different,my dd (14) needs far less sleep than him.

Interested to hear other 12/13 year old bedtimes.

13 yer old DD goes up at 9:30 and usually lights out at 10ish. I don't mind her reading or doing something quiet, it's important to give her that wind down time away from her phone and the TV.

She is up at 6:30am.

9pm. She's up at 6:30.

9:30pm is when her phone locks (iPhone screen time) and all she can do is text me during “lockdown”.

10pm lights out. She’s ND, wakes up at 6:30am every single day without an alarm.

Too late, had always needed lots of sleep but resists it. Usually asleep after 10 and has to get up at 6.40. Probably 11 at weekends which I dont mind as she can lay in. She has no devices in her room she just wants to be awake late. By Thursday each week she has trouble getting up.

Dd12 has a 10pm bedtime. Sometimes I'm barely keeping my eyes open at that time so can't always make sure she's turned off her phone and gone to bed. Her friends do stay up later and I said she can't as she struggles the next day. I think she needs more sleep than she gets but this is a compromise. Last night she was up past bedtime still doing homework. She doesn't really get going after school until evening, she needs to switch off for a bit after school which I think are related to other issues.

We aim for 9pm, usually get there around 9.30. He also says its too early and he lies awake but whenever I pass his room he is out cold. He gets up at 7.

At weekends I am more relaxed, around 11 if he's just on computer / screen but if we are doing something or he has friends over whenever I go up is fine.

His friends definitely have a later time though as I have a no phones upstairs rule so it's in the lounge with us and I can hear his phone buzzing often until 11ish.

Usually between 10 and 10.30. She's a night owl though and can be often found awake at 12! Unfortunately me and her dad are night owls as well.

illiterato · 13/01/2023 09:46

8:30 but usually reads till 9:30. Has to get up at 6:45 and just needs a lot of sleep. Has rugby one night so that's a later bedtime.

It's hard to compare as some kids, like mine have to get up earlier, whereas some can probably roll out of bed at 8:15 and still make school.

About 9.30 for my just turned 13 year old, but she's up just after 6 for school. As a teacher I'd say there's a significant proportion of secondary kids that don't get enough sleep and it does have a major impact on them

Cincinnatus · 13/01/2023 09:52

21:30. Sometimes 22:00.

Thanks everyone. A huge range of answers on the thread now.

I agree it depends what time they have to be up for school.
