What time does your 12 year old go to bed?

QuizteamAguillera · 12/01/2023 22:09

DS is 12 (13 in may) and I aim for bedtime/lights out at 9:30pm on a school night.

He claims this is too early (yes lots of his mates are still up which I reckon is driving this).

He gets up okish,7:30am wake up.

I know every child is different,my dd (14) needs far less sleep than him.

Interested to hear other 12/13 year old bedtimes.

My twelve year old is up to bed at 10.00 on a week day and 11.00 on a weekend, I know a lot of her friends go later than this though.

LostMyMarblesToday · 12/01/2023 22:16

Not quite 12 yet (6 months away), but cannot get him into bed at 9.30.

The few times I've forced him, he's found it more annoying as he's had to lie in bed awake.

He usually gets into bed just after 10, wakes at 7.

Both my dc have always slept far less than their peers, so I'm guessing it's just the way they're built.

FancyFelix · 12/01/2023 22:25

Mine is nearly 13 and goes to bed quite early on an evening with no activities, between 8:30 and 9. It's later a few nights a week when he has sport and other activities.

He needs the sleep though, when he goes to bed at 8:30 he's asleep almost instantly and stays that way until about 7am. His younger brother sleeps far less (about 9:30 - 6am)

9:30 on a school night and he is 13 in April so similar age. He has to be up at 7 so seems appropriate to me and he doesnt complain much.

QuizteamAguillera · 12/01/2023 22:41

Quite a range so far,as expected I suppose!

Maybe we’ll try a later time and see how he gets on. I’ve told him he won’t be gaming or on his phone though!

9.30 in bed but can read until 10 on a school night. A bit more relaxed at weekends and holidays

Resembleflower · 12/01/2023 22:51

9.30 here, he cannot get up in the mornings. He is not happy about it grumbles but is asleep quickly so I think he needs it! Sat and sun he plays football and recently only admitted that it’s not worth staying up late for. He def needs a lot more sleep than his brother.

Yika · 12/01/2023 22:55

Around 9.30 for lights out (getting up at 7). Ideally would be 9, and get up at 6:45 (we have to rush in the morning).

Frumpymumma · 12/01/2023 22:56

Ds used to go around 10 but i found maybe once a week it would catch up with him and he'd not get up properly in the morning. Almost being late for sc, ie me then having to drive him and then having to drive to work as was opposite direction ( where I'd normally bus as was cheaper and quicker) he would give me so much attitude as was tired. That often he'd end up asleep by 8 30 /9 that day.

Even now at college he still will struggle occasionally

Fabfam · 12/01/2023 22:59

My children all went to bed when they were tired . No point in forcing a teenager to bed against their will.
At a guess they probably went upstairs abut 10pm . It was a few years ago now.

prettydesertflower · 12/01/2023 23:01

My DC will be 13 in May. All gadgets off by 8pm then he can read till 9pm. He gets up without an alarm by about 630am. It’s more relaxed on weekends and holidays.

ChicoryDip · 12/01/2023 23:02

At that age DC were in bed for around 9pm, would read for a bit and then have lights out for 9:30pm.

A bit later at weekends or holidays but given the amount of sport they did they needed their sleep.

Jomummy1013 · 12/01/2023 23:04

My daughter is 13 in May. She goes to bed between 8.45 and 9 and will go straight to sleep

I have one a year younger than yours (y6) he still has a bedtime of 9-930 ish and sometimes even a story!

Then one a year older than yours, 14 in May. She doesn't really have a bedtime as such, we ask her to go up at 2130 ish, then she potters around and eventually turns off her light at 1015/1030pm ish. If we see she is still up on a school night at 1015 we will tell her she's better go to sleep or she will be tired.

Phones/screens go onto downtime at 2045 for younger and 2130 for older.

Smartiepants79 · 12/01/2023 23:13

9:30 lights out by 10.
It’s recommended that her age range gets at least 9 hours sleep. She is up at 7 so bed by 10 seems right to me. Especially on a school night.
What are they doing if they’re up later? More screens and phones??

RedHelenB · 12/01/2023 23:17

At 12 I let mine decide their own bedtimes.

CopperMaran · 12/01/2023 23:17

9pm weekdays and 10pm weekends but obviously sometimes later if something on. We all need our more than the usual amount of sleep in our family though! And he’s also early to rise sometime between 6-7am and he does all his homework etc then as he’s a morning person.

Climbles · 12/01/2023 23:18

In her bedroom around 8.30 (up for 7am) but she reads and faffs about in her room. and I don’t have a lights out time.

CeeceeBloomingdale · 12/01/2023 23:20

When she decides she is tired. Most nights this is about 10pm, it's rarely later than 10:30, even on weekends.

WonderingWanda · 12/01/2023 23:22

13 y/o 9pm on weekdays, sometimes strings it out a but is usually exhausted. Wakes at 7am. 10 on Sat / Sun. Does lots of physical activity, sleeps deeply and wouldn't be able to function without a decent amount of sleep.

UnicornsDoExist · 12/01/2023 23:22

10pm lights out, awake around 730-8 and bright as a button!

BeBesideTheSea · 12/01/2023 23:24

DS is 13. Lights out at 8:30. Up at 6:40. Always needed a lot of sleep.

Mercyovermerit · 12/01/2023 23:25

11yo bed at 8, lights out at 9 ,(but more often 10) except scouts when he's not home until 9.30. he'll start cadets at 12 so that will be out 3x a week until 9.30.
13yo not home until 9.30-10 3 nights a week.
