Asylum seekers - are we going too far?

RiceOnABike · 11/01/2023 15:33

I will start by saying that I am very sympathetic to asylum seekers, and until now I've believed that we should do all we can to help them in their plight. However...

A small village in Northamptonshire (population 500) is soon to become home to 400 refugees who have arrived here by crossing the channel. This village seems to be very rural, about 8 miles away from the nearest town I think. Apparently there are no facilities there whatsoever apart from a small shop. The migrants will have access to the local GPs and NHS dentists, and we all know how much pressure they are under at the moment. But the straw that has broken the camel's back for me is where they will be staying. Yes, that is really it in the photos. How can we justify all this when the everyday Brit is struggling to heat their homes at the moment? And more worryingly, what sort of deterrent is it to others considering making that dangerous journey across the channel?

So am I being unreasonable, or are we now offering too much?

But it’s not being done because the government wants to give asylum seekers a luxury welcome! The way you have presented it is ridiculous.

it’s being done because the government won’t invest the money - which would be less than thst spent on alterntisvr accommodation- to build appropriate facilities. It’s a ludicrous failure of government policy

and dumb people such as yourself fall for the ridiculous interpretation of it as being giving asylum seekers luxury holidays

these are rub down hotels that can’t earn income otherwise

it is a destabilizing thing to do to small communities - which means there should be appropriate facilities provided by the government

EmmaEmerald · 11/01/2023 19:08

ah, so hotel includes food.

You've got to wonder who shields the traffickers

no poor soul is going to risk life and limb for this.

How do you chose who gets sanctuary and who has to go back for torture, rape and death?

What, in Albania? Lol

LlynTegid · 11/01/2023 19:09

Places like those the OP mentions would not even be considered for asylum seekers if the government processed and made decisions in a reasonable timescale. Days or weeks, not months or years.

Then easier to return for those whose claim is refused, those accepted can start work and contributing taxes to the country.

EmmaEmerald · 11/01/2023 19:10

OP, please don't take offence, but I hope you didn't really think they were getting access to a heated pool!

How many safe countries have these people passed through to get to UK.

Asylum seekers in hotels get £8 a week. I know!! I’d also risk death for that massive amount!

There are a lot of British people who would like 8 Pounds left for themselves after heating, hot water and three meals a day.

It’s the government that sets the amount though isn’t it, not the asylum seekers. They’re not taking anything away from you, the government is, so please direct your anger in the right direction.

I’m sure many British people wouldn’t actually be happy with having to share a hotel room with a stranger for months/years, not allowed to work, or have enough money to travel to see your family, or to be able to choose your own dinner, to be moved around at short notice losing any connections you have managed to make…

PinkFrogss · 11/01/2023 19:13

I wonder how many of the posters complaining are net contributors rather than net takers. You have to be a pretty high earner and have low service use in order to be a contributor. I hope you don’t use the NHS much and won’t accept any state care in your old age!

What, in Albania? Lol

Yeah, young Albanian women and teenagers are trafficked to the UK from Albania to work in forced prostitution. Very fucking funny. 🤨

“And when the French authorities treat them like they’re not meant to be there by not processing their asylum claims and leaving them homeless, with no jobs and no money it becomes unsafe.”

Im getting mixed messages about France, posters are contradicting each other.

Some are saying they provide far more than we do….

Others say that they leave them homeless with no money? If this is true then you can see why the uk is attractive, and countries should all be forced to offer the same basic package so there is no advantage of going to one country compared to another.

Less than a quarter of asylum claims are denied, maybe you should share your wisdom with the government so they can process claims a bit faster! You obviously know all the ins and outs of each individuals claims

Well the images look nice. I don’t know what to say more than that.

I’d love the Albanian boat situation to be resolved though

Isnt that true of everything though? Some asylum seekers in France might have their claim processed quickly and get given housing. Some may speak French so find it easier to navigate the system or have connections in France@. Others might have their claim delayed and be essentially homeless. Like in the UK, one group gets sent to a country hotel, one group got shoved into a disease ridden detention centre. There’s not much logic to a lot of it.

Got bored of readig the daily Mail, OP?

There's always some numpty that trots out this insult. People disagreeing with you has nothing to do with the Daily Mail.

pigsinoodies · 11/01/2023 19:24

I don't know why everyone's obsessed with Albanians. The whole population of Albania is less than the population of Greater Manchester. if every one of them turned up here tomorrow they'd make up one in 30 of the population.

Flowersinthebasement · 11/01/2023 19:25

Anmer Hall, Kensington Palace, Chequers, and Highgrove next.

BewareTheLibrarians · 11/01/2023 19:26

@pigsinoodies I reckon it’s a deep seated fear of Dua Lipa. I don’t get it, she seems lovely!

Something to do with the trafficking issue I reckon.
