I've said it before but I have to say it again, I cannot believe how warm it is for January.

It is warm enough to get away without the heating on. I am really concerned about what this means for the temperatures next summer & global warming in general. Never in my life have I been able to sail through January with just a woolly jumper & scarf. It's insane.

I keep turning mine off. Decembers hill was over £300 and this month is on target for £150.
I'm
Not sure how well I'll cope if the summer is as hot as it was last year. I like warm sunny days about 22 degrees but hotter affects my asthma and I sweat buckets and feel grotty.

StarInTheHeavens · 10/01/2023 21:28

I hate high temperatures too. I enjoy overcast summer days. Warm enough to do what you want without burning up.

Warm? It's been minus 3 to zero here at night with day time temps of 2 to 5.

Last week it was minus 6 at night

I'd say that's about right for January?

AutisticLegoLover · 10/01/2023 21:40

We have had rain of biblical proportions here today. Yesterday it was hailstones. I got caught in both. Usually if it's dry then January sees me in a big hoodie, hat, scarf and gloves out and about. I walk fast and clock up at least 5 miles a day so I keep warm that way. The house was miserably cold in November and December though. I don't mind it chilly outside but cold inside is not nice. Cold and wet outside is particularly miserable. I always think the heat of summer is fine as long as you don't have to do anything or whatever you need to do doesn't involve fast walks up big hills. When I think back to the 80s and 90s the weather was much more appropriately seasonal. A hot day was 22 degrees and I don't recall any forecast warmer than that. We watched the weather religiously as a family after the 6pm news and 22 was as good as it got up here in the north west. I remember it being 26 degrees in oxford once in 2013 and I felt really unwell. 26 would be ok after last summer. It's really scary what's happening to the world's weather and we can't turn back the clock.

PolliFlinders · 10/01/2023 21:41

Been up to -7 here, very cold, snow and ice. Last summer was a complete wash out as well.

Where are you? I’m rural north England and it’s been 11 today and will be a low of 6 overnight. It’s not been freezing since the pre Xmas v cold snap.

userxx · 10/01/2023 21:43

It's been wet but warm in south Manchester today. Very wet.

Wbeezer · 10/01/2023 21:43

It's been freezing in Scotland! I think there was one day when it was briefly mild but that's it.

Nicewarmfeet · 10/01/2023 21:46

Yes 13 degrees today. Very mild for January. I too fear the summer will be scorching. It's quite scary when you properly stop and think about it. I think we'll likely have another run of 40 degree + days. Drought and the rest of it. The next big war will be for water not oil (in my opinion) I hope I'm wrong.

GoodVibesHere · 10/01/2023 22:19

Have you forgotten the two weeks of freezing icy weather before Christmas?!

It's wet, windy and cold where I am - typical winter weather.

StarInTheHeavens · 10/01/2023 22:29

The next big war will be for water not oil (in my opinion) You're not wrong @Nicewarmfeet I can't remember the exact statistics but it was something like China's ground water has reduced by 50% and of the remaining water a staggering quantity is polluted beyond the highest measure of the pollution index.

I haven't forgotten before xmas @GoodVibesHere but I'm talking about January. In my mind it's the worst month (Feb being a short month).

Im in North Essex and had to take my coat off after walking through the town centre today. I got too hot. teddy bear coat Back in September 2021 i bought a puffer coat but the two winters have been too mild to wear it.

MrsAmaretto · 10/01/2023 22:37

Agree with @Loafbeginsat60 it’s bloody cold and my heating is well and truly on! It seems wet and windy for a January but so far, so normal.

Hazelbrazil · 10/01/2023 22:40

Warm wet winter usually followed by a cool wet summer

JenniferBooth · 10/01/2023 22:42

Yes please Could not deal with another heatwave like last July. Hell on earth

BertaHoon · 10/01/2023 22:44

Wet and warm here in East Mids. Think it was warmer out than in!

Every year, I always comment that November 5th used to be freezing cold. Hats, coats, scarves and gloves. Even then you'd only be warm if by the bonfire.

I walked up in just a jumper and jeans this year (and I'm definitely not rock hard!)

Cigarettesaftersex1 · 10/01/2023 22:45

13 degrees here in S Manchester today, was sweating in my coat but it was so wet.

Yes we had the freeze but that was before Christmas and not January as OP stated

Leemoe · 10/01/2023 22:45

We've only lynhad a couple of days where the Mercury has reached above 7 degrees.
With the wind chill it feels like 2-3.

I haven't been able to turn my heating off due to having massive windows and living in an exposed property.

Having said that I've been in some new build flats today and it was sweltering with the heating on. Just normal January weather so far as I can see.

The snow will no doubt return half way through March

Where are you living OP? It’s freezing here, there’s been sleet on and off the last two days and gale force winds. It was dark at half three yesterday because there was so much grey cloud. Think you are the exception from this thread

Leemoe · 10/01/2023 22:47

I'd be quite happy with another summer of heatwaves. I only become uncomfortable when it gets over about 32 degrees.

Bloody hate the winter, bring on the spring, only seventy or so bloody days to go now!

TheChosenTwo · 10/01/2023 22:51

I’m in the SE, cat told me it was 12 degrees this afternoon when picking ds up from football. I was just in joggers, a tshirt and jumper - wasn’t cold at all (okay yes, for the 10 minutes I was actually outside 😂 but I was practically stood still for the whole time!). It’s not mild enough for me to not want the heating on mind you, but it’s definitely not what I would class as ‘cold’ out.

Workinghardeveryday · 10/01/2023 22:51

I feel uneasy about it all too.

For the first time I am in a way dreading summer for fear of really high temperatures. Ended up with heatstroke and in a&e last year, was pretty scary.

BitOutOfPractice · 10/01/2023 22:54

Freezing this morning walking to work, rain dripping off my hood, fingers cold. Depends on where you’re sitting. If you’re not leaving the house I can imagine it’s not too bad. Out walking in it, bloody horrible.

Pootle40 · 10/01/2023 22:55

Not 13c in central Scotland - 7 or 8c maybe today
