Just that, really. I am trying to save up for some big expenses (house renovations) but I am worried about blowing up the majority of my savings and starting from scratch again.

That's hlarious. Nothing. Live hand to mouth

Lei8133 · 11/01/2023 17:52

Sometimes it’s just nice to know where you are in the grand scheme of things… it’s definitely given me some useful perspective.

P.S. Currently just over £1,000. Over 10k in debt (loan for a much needed new car) and My 1 year old has just under £300 that I’ve saved for him. Hoping that at the least he’ll be able to buy and old banger on me for his 18th! #life

Approx £4.5k in mine, and DP about £5k, I'm just coming to the end of my 12 months mat leave so we haven't saved a lot this year, I think we've spent about £4k from our savings this year on a new boiler and various other house related bits.

Just over £100,000 (not saved it’s from inheritance).

Lavendersquare · 11/01/2023 18:01

The pandemic definitely boosted our savings, prior to covid with had around £12k saved and now have just under £50k saved up. Made up mainly of money not spent on foreign holidays.

We have now got into the habit of saving rather than spending and I've become a lot more frugal than I used to be. Every spare penny we save and I sell as much as possible on Marketplace, Vinted abc eBay etc and it's surprising how it all mounts up.

Hi01 · 11/01/2023 18:02

£878,000

Zipps · 11/01/2023 18:02

£9k in premium bonds each.
£20k in emergency fund
£5k buffer in current account
Over that we invest in property, jewellery, fine wine etc.

Hellsmovie · 11/01/2023 18:04

24k between me and OH. We are saving for a deposit though

bethankfulforwhatyouhave · 11/01/2023 18:05

I don't even have a savings account! Life is hard, things seem to look up for a bit and then we get a blow that messes everything up again. Life is very sucky especially at the minute 😔

3 months expenses is what my financial advisor says you need. So I keep that as a buffer and have some savings but thats for my house purchase.

This is reassuring. I worry about savings all the time!

Jayne35 · 11/01/2023 18:05

I save for holidays and home improvements. Last year we had new windows and a luxury holiday and balance was £90 but just carried on saving for this years holidays. I dont panic when it’s low as I never had savings until my children were adults anyway. We try to save £350-500 a month.

altmember · 11/01/2023 18:07

About 50k. I too am saving for house extension/renovation. Costs seem to be going up as fast as I can save (now even faster with inflation and energy costs). As long as the work adds value to your house (not necessarily completely covers it) then you're not blowing all your savings - you're investing in your home.

LakieLady · 11/01/2023 18:08

£41k, but I'm old and have paid off my mortgage.

I'm a pensioner, but still working and I try and just live on my pensions, so it doesn't come as a shock when I have £1k a month to cover everything. I also need to have some work done on the house so I can sell it and move to a cheaper area when I stop work.

HildasLostSock · 11/01/2023 18:09

Also £50 😂 but I'm debt free finally for the first time in 10 years after an abusive marriage and that will going towards spends for my first
Ever holiday !

I’m in a similar position after divorcing from an abusive partner. I’ve just bought a house and planning on doing a few things then trying to put 6000 in savings

ellie09 · 11/01/2023 18:10

How do people save so much money?! My monthly salary is £1750 and between rent, bills, childcare etc I literally have had to dip into my savings the last year.

My savings have went from £4000 to £400 currently

OwwwMuuuum · 11/01/2023 18:13

If I was starting house renovations I’d want £100k in the bank. Depends on the renovations of course.

Retreat · 11/01/2023 18:13

About £300k. It was double that but we spent it on house renovations. People around us would not know. We’re not big spenders. We don’t have a flashy car. Have a largish house I suppose. The majority of our spending is on our DCs activities.

amylou8 · 11/01/2023 18:14

Enough to tide me over for about 6 months...or take a round the world cruise...hmmmm

20p. And I’m in my overdraft on current account. Threads like these remind me why I shouldn’t think I’m a mumsnetter.

Yeah, I was just thinking the same. It's an eye-opening thread.

Yespresh · 11/01/2023 18:16

An inheritance

TerfOnATrain · 11/01/2023 18:17

About £150k split between ISA, shares, property and savings accounts.

we had nothing, and I mean not a bean until we paid off the mortgage at 50. So since then, we have saved all the mortgage money. DC have also left home in this period so no longer cost us a penny.

DH has also had promotions so his bonus gets saved. We live in a modest house in the north so outgoings are not excessive.

Rhaenys · 11/01/2023 18:26

I don’t have a savings account but I’ve got about £2k in my current account.
