How much do you have in your savings account?

Just that, really. I am trying to save up for some big expenses (house renovations) but I am worried about blowing up the majority of my savings and starting from scratch again.

@Heatherbell1978

Do you mind if I ask have you had any major wins with the PBs?

Peckhaminn · 10/01/2023 21:58

17k. Sounds a lot but it truly isn't when you consider that the house needs renovating 🙈

Adelais · 10/01/2023 22:07

About £4,000.

20p. And I’m in my overdraft on current account. Threads like these remind me why I shouldn’t think I’m a mumsnetter.

WordtoYoMumma · 10/01/2023 22:14

No savings. Just debt.

Moonyblue · 10/01/2023 22:20

£15 K in my personal. It has stayed like that for a while and I haven’t been able to save anymore in the last 2 years because of costs like buying a house , starting my child in childcare, etc…

Same. Nothing in my savings account and -£65 in my current account. It’s like a different world!

pumpkinpink · 10/01/2023 22:27

£0
About £10k in debt and forever in my overdraft.
Can't imagine not living like this unless some miracle money appears.

Franticbutterfly · 11/01/2023 00:25

There’s a premium bond thread with some good ideas on it and money saving expert website has a whole article on PB. At the moment they are not bad for savings instant access…but there’s probably accounts that would give you more. My bank is paying 7% on a regular saving of up to £300 a month for a year. (FD).

BarrelOfOtters · 11/01/2023 07:00

I had £0 savings and was constantly in my overdraft on credit cards till I was mid 30s. I’ve now got savings. It can happen.

AWaferThinMint · 11/01/2023 07:13

About 2.5k in regular savings and a massive chunk in Premium Bonds which is where we are storing the money we got house renovation when we remortgaged. We take out of that pot ONLY to fix the house (and live in hope we win big in the meantime while we wait for our builder!)

I also have savings for our business but that's to pay they tax bill so isn't really ours, but in absolute genuine dire straits emergency I could use that and resave.

Me too. One you pay off the debt and start saving, the tide turns.

Decafflatteplease · 11/01/2023 09:45

Well this is making me feel rubbish!

Zero in savings here, and dipping into the overdraft each month ☹️ 6 of us on one salary is hard!

BarbaraofSeville · 11/01/2023 10:02

Comparison is the thief of joy, especially with no context about life stage, income, fixed outgoings, or a whole load of other relevant factors, plus MN is not very representative of the population as a whole and no-one's necessarily being truthful anyway.

This thread is no more useful than a list of random numbers.

BarbaraofSeville · 11/01/2023 10:03

Plus there's a tendency for the respondents to be self selecting - disproportionately made up of those who have a lot of savings and want to tell people about it.

The OP has done the virtual equivalent of walking into Waitrose and asked the women with the nicest coats how much money they have, so it's not a surprise when most people say 'lots'.

Sadly the tide can also turn the other way. We had savings until our third child, who is disabled, was born 4 years ago. My ability to work was vastly reduced, and our savings were wiped out with the additional costs associated with having him.

DNo · 11/01/2023 17:42

£70 but I need a new tyre so it will be £5 this weekend and my birthday is on Saturday so not planning much! 🤦🏻‍♀️

Fluffmum · 11/01/2023 17:44

150 quid

Itsnotaferret · 11/01/2023 17:45

£1.70

themagicnumberthree · 11/01/2023 17:46

£30. Would like to get around £4500 of credit card debt paid off first

Minalima · 11/01/2023 17:46

£0 unfortunately. Survive month by month.

mickandrorty · 10/01/2023 17:22

enough to cover 3 months if the shit hits the fan, I'm happy with that right now as last year we were 15k in debt and i had no idea how the fuck we were going to survive these price increases.

Well done you! How did you clear £15k and manage to save 3 months?? That’s really impressive!

Yourcatisnotsorry · 11/01/2023 17:50

Nothing 😳and I earn 6 figures and have no excuse. We do have investments, LISAs, premium bonds and assets but no accessible savings at all. Credit cards are my friends. Will try to change this in 2023.
