Bank account suspended. Can't get another

Around 2 years ago my daughter bank account got suspended it was with Halifax. Did not understand why . But they also would not explain anything. Thought it was odd. Managed to open one with metro had that for a while then the same thing happened. They told her they can't tell her anything and to write to head office.

Daughter managed to get a bank card which is done on line. Its not a maim stream bank and has a few cons to it . She can do basic stuff but she can't get credit checks done ect.

Anyway she did not contact head office at the time . Because she had so much on her mind. Was in the process of fleeing domestic violence. Had no fixed address due to keep being moved from one temporary to another dye to safety. She had social services involved . Them there was all the court and prison stuff linked to her ex. So she had so much going on that she just did not sort the bank stuff.

So basically it's been roughly 2 years since the bank situation happend. She has no idea why it happend. But something dodgy must have been going on for it to happen twice. Anyway even though its bed 2 years cam she do anything? She desperately needs a proper account.

Also has this happend to anyone if so what did you do ?

The thing is, banks don't have to give you their services so little point in trying to prove she wasn't complicit in the fraudulent activity.

I read an article some months ago by a woman arguing that she had the right to have an account with a bank who had similarly closed it down. Iirc the funds in the account were held from her while POCA investigating.

She had no legal right to the account or funds until their investigation was completed.

If your daughter can't get an account could she use yours? Pain in the ass but I can't think of another solution.

How would there be proof she 100% knew 🤔

Because most people would phone the bank or police if money appeared in their account that they had no idea about.. Especially if it's large sums that's she's been withdrawing or giving her card details and pin to someone else to withdraw money she's likely already breaking basic t and c of the the bank. It's not unreasonable to assume she knew it was dodgy or she'd have asked her boyfriend where he'd got the money from and why he couldn't use his own bank account to put his own money in. I know she is vulnerable and naive but from the bank perspective, she knew it was dodgy. It's shit for her but she knew.

You're not supposed to give your PIN number to anyone. Or store it in apps. I know it's very common for people to do so but If she's told the bank she gave her debit card and pin to someone else and let them use it like that, she's told them she knew. There's their proof. it also shows she doesn't keep her account secure. No bank will want that risk.

A close friend about ten years ago had hundreds of pounds in adult content charges on her account, and she couldn't claim that back because she told the bank she had given her debit card and online banking passwords and pin to her partner and that he'd written them down and kept the paper in his wallet so he doesn't forget when he wants to check on her spending. The bank told her she had broken t and c doing that and by sharing her pin and passwords she hasn't taken steps to keeps her account secure and as it's not a joint account, only she should have access to it.

Her account was closed not long after that but they didn't say why. Also turned out the porn and cam stuff was her partner anyway and he only fessed up when she said she was going to phone police for a crime number.

Ah yes that makes sense from the banking point of view . I think I took the comment from a personal point of view because from a dv point of view it would have been forced. But yes I get from the banking point of view. Anyway she has applied for a vashc account says can take up to 10 days for a decision which seems odd. I also lolled up about markers wxt and it says it might be a good idea to talk to a bank before applying.. if nothing comes of the one she's applied for I will tell her to go to the bank .

No because she has UC paid in. They won't pay it into someone else's account.

Happened to my DP, contacted CFAS who had a fraud file on him which was a mistake. So he contacted the bank who put it on him, went through to fraud and it was sorted. He had £2K compensation for it. Start with CFAS and go from there.

Universal Credit can be payed into a bank acount with a different name to the claim, my son needed to do this in about a year ago and used one of my currant accounts.

workinmums · 11/01/2023 14:31

OP, until she can get to the bottom of it any bank account she opens will be closed.
