Just visited Newport, couldn’t wait to leave, what’s your get me outta here place?

Just have just visited Newport for an appointment, we weren’t there long, toilet stop and cuppa in Asda, half hour appointment in city centre and then got lost on the way out but felt very uneasy the whole time were there. It had quite a menacing feel to it and even on the bare aesthetics of the city seemed quite run down with a lots of old closed pubs, shops etc…

I would actually go as far to say it made me feel quite unwell but I guess that would just be coincidence!!

We actually live rural Devon so not even like I’m not used to the odd lay line of two but I was quite relieved to get back on the road…

Has anyone else felt that about a place before?

The area in which I live has come up a couple of times.
My get me out of here place is Dartmoor in Devon. Some friends and I drove across it at night and I was really scared. No idea why. I love the rest of Devon.

Edmonton, Canada. Vile

Puzzledandpissedoff · 06/01/2023 17:40

Bradford - I went up there for the Pictureville cinema and wished I hadn't

Though if what you want is a weird vibe I'd vote for Dungeness; how anyone can live there beats me, and yet people do

Also Brussels, I had my phone stolen while I was there.

I nearly died in a hospital there. Needs to be permanently scrubbed off the map.

There are two Newports in Wales! (That I know of)

I never go to Newport in Gwent though - or as rarely as I can help! I used to go as a teenager to TJs and shopping in the cool shops in the market and the arcades. I suspect it has changed a great deal since those days…

They're actually spending money on the arcades and doing a great job. The market has had a lovely makeover as well. In fairness Newport is trying hard to turn around.

I didn't think the city of Newport was that bad - but passport office bit is more run down side.

Nuneaton - had a good Saturday market and while I always got a negative vibe more generally they did try with the town center.

Convery town center always felt run down - but looking at images maybe it's been done up in last few years - or they have a good photographer - but there were still nicer bits.

Oddly bits of Bath - that aren't run down had that vibe for me - just a not welcome vibe though again most of the town center was fine.

Agree! The Estate parts of Bath have a rather unwelcoming feeling- But isn’t that true of Estates anywhere?

I am from Wales and coming back over the Severn Bridge on a coach to arrive at Newport bus station after an amazing trip abroad (first time outside Europe) when I was 17 remains the biggest comedown of my life.

Someo · 06/01/2023 17:42

Surprised no one's me mentioned Crewe yet.

Surprised at people saying N Wales! We love it there.

Can't imagine anywhere in Canada being that bad. What's wrong with Edmonton, or should I ask what's right with it? 😄

GloomyDarkness · 06/01/2023 17:43

My DH has had a weird feeling at the Vyne National Trust place near Basingstoke -he reckons there are ley lines there or something.

I lived in Basingstoke - I found the center depressing and I was glad to move - Old Basing was nice when we walked out there.

WhileMyGuitarGentlyWeeps · 06/01/2023 17:43

My get me outta here place? Rural Devon.

Puppylucky · 06/01/2023 17:43

Ha! I haven't read the full thread but so agree about Newport. My husband is from there so I have the misfortune of having to go back quite frequently . I grew up in Cardiff so it's not new to me but I'm still always shocked by what a scary place it (still) is.

ThePoshUns · 06/01/2023 17:44

I will add
Telford
Andover
Gloucester
Bridgend

WhileMyGuitarGentlyWeeps · 06/01/2023 17:44

Couldn't think of anywhere worse to live than Cornwall or Devon.

IsThePopeCatholic · 06/01/2023 17:44

Croydon town centre. Horrendous.
coventry. Grim.

Stevenage, felt lucky to get out without being stabbed. Grim.

I agree I will never go back to Stevenage

Peterborough. I lived there for 2 years and hated every second, now when we go back to visit in laws I feel uncomfortable and down the whole time. The whole city is awful

Born and brought up there, left as soon as I turned 18

YfenniChristie · 06/01/2023 17:46

I work in and around Newport and I'm oddly fond of it, especially Pillgwenlly. It's a little rough around the edges but the community is great, plus the city has done fantastic history/heritage that should be promoted far more than it is.

I found Glastonbury really unsettling when I visited there a few years back. Really weird atmosphere, wasn't what I expected and wouldn't go back.

MasterBeth · 06/01/2023 17:46

Truro.

Crewe is a bit dire, and whilst North Wales has its nice areas Rhyl is a shithole. Even Colwyn Bay has gone downhill ... Used to be nice.

Possibly but I've been in Bristol estate bit, Newport and Stoke on Trent and other places we lived in North and south of England and didn't feel like that.

BlueThursday · 06/01/2023 17:47

We went to Bradford to buy a car and I honestly thought we were going to get shot and our own car stolen.

I say that as a born and bred Glaswegian

normanboreman · 06/01/2023 17:47

Dover

Lifeomars · 06/01/2023 17:48

Mansfield is grim, feels and generally is a very poor place with a real stuck in the 70's vibe to it and a reputation for racism
