Just have just visited Newport for an appointment, we weren’t there long, toilet stop and cuppa in Asda, half hour appointment in city centre and then got lost on the way out but felt very uneasy the whole time were there. It had quite a menacing feel to it and even on the bare aesthetics of the city seemed quite run down with a lots of old closed pubs, shops etc…

I would actually go as far to say it made me feel quite unwell but I guess that would just be coincidence!!

We actually live rural Devon so not even like I’m not used to the odd lay line of two but I was quite relieved to get back on the road…

Has anyone else felt that about a place before?

I hated Newport too when I went recently to get a fast passport renewal. What a dump plus the directions to the passport office were rubbish. The Asda cafe and loos were awful. On the positive side, the woman in customer services was friendly when I said I was lost and looking for the passport office

Twinlife2 · 06/01/2023 17:31

YES! Thought it was just me that felt that.

lieselotte · 06/01/2023 17:32

I don't think Newton Abbot, Torquay or Paignton have weird vibes, but they have their run down bits for sure. I did a geography field trip to Dawlish Warren, I don't think it has a weird vibe either but it is a bit boring and full of holiday caravans.

As for having a go at run down places, there are a few places mentioned that are very affluent like Wokingham.

My DH has had a weird feeling at the Vyne National Trust place near Basingstoke -he reckons there are ley lines there or something.

Someone mentioned Romney Marsh - Winchelsea is a bit weird, but probably because it feels like a museum piece, it doesn't seem to have any life there these days.

ZittiEBuoni · 06/01/2023 17:33

Agree with PP about the Gare du Nord area of Paris - there is just something malign in the air there. Shudder.

Found Newport ugly and concretey when I went there in the 80s but not threatening particularly.

Had a horrible feeling driving through the flat Lincs landscape between Peterborough and Spalding, it was just too weird. But I think I'm not a flat/east type, I like the damp west and rolling hills, so probably just prejudice on my part.

Also loathed Stoke but could be the influence of the awful ex who lived there.

Neverknowinglysensible · 06/01/2023 17:34

I’m surprised no one has mentioned Rhyl. Although, to be fair to the place, it’s not that it’s got a bad vibe, more that fact that it’s been the victim of an awful lot of bad planning decisions over many, many years.
For sheer get-me-out-of-here vibes, Romford takes some beating. I was really on edge the whole time.

TeddyTed · 06/01/2023 17:34

I see my home county has been mentioned on this thread once or twice… 🤦‍♀️

I might be the only person who really disliked Prague.

LubaLuca · 06/01/2023 17:35

Llanberis always seems like such a sad place, it makes me feel a bit uneasy.

TeddyTed · 06/01/2023 17:35

Also Brussels, I had my phone stolen while I was there.

808Kate1 · 06/01/2023 17:35

Another vote for Fort William.

justasoul · 06/01/2023 17:35

I know objectively that there’s nothing wrong with it, but Bracknell gives the creeps.

RestingMurderousFace · 06/01/2023 17:36

Sunderland. What an almighty shithole!

throwawayusername2 · 06/01/2023 17:36

There's a truck stop/Services on the way up to Scotland (think it's just past Carlisle) which feels like a place where Bad Things Happen. We pulled in one afternoon to use a loo. The entrance hall had a brown sticky lino, wallpaper from the 70s and everything was eerily silent and 'brown'. No signs of human life so it was a very quick wee and we were out of there! Hurried back to the car and kept checking over my shoulder to make sure a person with an axe wasn't following us!

808Kate1 · 06/01/2023 17:36

Oh and Marseilles.

ilovesushi · 06/01/2023 17:36

Portsmouth

LeonardoAcropolis · 06/01/2023 17:37

Hemel Hempstead, Watford, Dagenham and Hadleigh all have horrible vibes.

lieselotte · 06/01/2023 17:37

I've not been to Bracknell since they redid the shopping centre but it was a rather unpleasant concrete mess before. They had a Christmas market there once, you couldn't find a less atmospheric place to have one!

My DH just mentioned another place that gives him the heebie jeebies - Dartington shopping centre outside Totnes (there is a bit of a South Devon theme going on on this thread).

I get a weird vibe about Bodmin. As if I have a connection with it many centuries ago. Not a good connection. And I'm not at all a woo person.

Yes, being in Bodmin is like being in a cursed dream.

IhateJan22 · 06/01/2023 17:37

Blackpool

Rainbowbritestar · 06/01/2023 17:37

Hull-it stinks and just got a bad vibe-I can’t put my finger on it

Blackpool-hated it as a kid and went back years later-we witnessed a young girl on the beach, giving an old bloke a bj at about 7pm (while we where walking along the beach) and the seafront was really run down

scarbough-I hate it-I don’t know why but I can’t wait to leave

Peterborough-it stank like one big fart-I walked round gagging at it (I wasn’t trying to prove a point or to be rude-the smell kept hitting the back of my throat)

york-I’m from York,my family live there (I’m nc) but while everyone bangs on about the beautiful buildings, ghosts and history, they forget I know the underbelly of the place
I’ve had to go back 3 times over 7 years and as we get to about billbough top,it’s like the sky goes grey and I feel ‘pushed out’ and that I don’t and have never belonged there

its a relief to leave

CaptainAlatriste · 06/01/2023 17:38

@Choconut I don't mind Bodmin the town centre but I managed to get lost once in Cardinham Woods near the industrial estate and I genuinely thought I was going to die out there. I ended up walking along a train track to find civilisation and an elderly lady in a cottage miles from anywhere right out by herself drove me to the train station. I have never been so frightened in my life. It really was like being in a horror film.

We too went to Newport passport office in sluicing rain.
Lovely helpful staff.

Sorry to hear Stockport is a bit horrible. I was on holiday there 50 years ago and I remember it had beautiful flowers everywhere.

throwawayusername2 · 06/01/2023 17:38

Milton Keynes! Feels completely soulless and even know it's meant to simplify things I never could get my head around the V and H roads.

SleepyRooster · 06/01/2023 17:39

Shanghai

Hastings

Port towns in general

GloomyDarkness · 06/01/2023 17:39

I didn't think the city of Newport was that bad - but passport office bit is more run down side.

Nuneaton - had a good Saturday market and while I always got a negative vibe more generally they did try with the town center.

Convery town center always felt run down - but looking at images maybe it's been done up in last few years - or they have a good photographer - but there were still nicer bits.

Oddly bits of Bath - that aren't run down had that vibe for me - just a not welcome vibe though again most of the town center was fine.
