Just have just visited Newport for an appointment, we weren’t there long, toilet stop and cuppa in Asda, half hour appointment in city centre and then got lost on the way out but felt very uneasy the whole time were there. It had quite a menacing feel to it and even on the bare aesthetics of the city seemed quite run down with a lots of old closed pubs, shops etc…

I would actually go as far to say it made me feel quite unwell but I guess that would just be coincidence!!

We actually live rural Devon so not even like I’m not used to the odd lay line of two but I was quite relieved to get back on the road…

Has anyone else felt that about a place before?

Blackpool. Fucking hell on earth and ALWAYS colder than you would expect whatever time of year you go.

Agreed. It actually makes me feel angry that it exists.
Its like a different world

OP im assuming you meam Newport Wales, as i live near Newport Shropshire and its a fabulous place x

Cherrysoup · 06/01/2023 18:37

Interesting. I’m looking to retire not a million miles from Newport, a local told me it’s not amazing but I’ll be rural so not too concerned.

Stevenage kind of surprises me: a lot of police live there, there’s a particular estate where loads of people I know live.

The only place I’ve ever felt scared was New Orleans, although I loved it, been twice. I’ve lived in Paris, London, Madrid, never been worried even wandering at silly o’clock.

Re Durham that someone mentioned, the city itself is lovely, as is the university, but some of the outskirts are grindingly poor and not very nice. Everyone always mentions Consett, but my memories are going to pat the horses in the field near my aunt’s house. I’d happily live there, given the house prices.

My ex is from Newport, and he once made me take a bus there and back from London. So I share your sentiment.

My get out place is Darlington. Sorry, but I spent a few days there for work and was so utterly depressed by the time I left.

Nothing wrong with Darlington at all

Millionaireshortbread0 · 06/01/2023 18:37

Skegness.
Not been to Blackpool but adult dc went and said it made them feel weird.

Croydon. I just despise it.

The Cronx? I don't mind it, but I'm an habitué of South London.

Trymein · 06/01/2023 18:38

Croydon and Crawley - hated it.
Eastleigh
Maryland

Squirrelsnut · 06/01/2023 18:39

I was uneasy in Hebden Bridge, Betys-y-Coed and Thetford.
Agree about hills; I grew up in Cambridgeshire and hilly areas feel oppressive to me no matter how lovely looking.

allthegoodusernameshavegone · 06/01/2023 18:39

Minehead, gives me chills thinking about it, we went by steam train for the day, it was like going back in time but not in a good way.

YoSofi · 06/01/2023 18:41

Mansfield. It’s an awful, depressing place and despite living nearby for most of my life I can’t think of a single redeeming feature.

Im surprised at those saying Nottingham, the outskirts can be a bit sketchy but the lace market etc are lovely. What is it you don’t like?

My other place is Sheffield, I can never wait to leave and avoid it as much as possible.

Needmorelego · 06/01/2023 18:41

I live near Croydon.... it's interesting 🤣
Some parts are terrible (London Road I'm looking at you....).
They seem to be obsessed with building more and more high rise buildings and knocking parts down and it's just a confusing chaos.

Terven · 06/01/2023 18:42

Bristol - WTF happened? Used to be lovely and now dirty and awful.
Middlesbrough- never want to go back.

Bestcatmum · 06/01/2023 18:42

Brighton. God awful place.

SweetSakura · 06/01/2023 18:42

Blackpool, Crewe and Great Yarmouth are three places I have been to where I just could not wait to leave and would actively avoid going back

RogersOrganismicProcess · 06/01/2023 18:43

There is a shopping centre (mass of claustrophobic covered concrete) in a town called Runcorn, not to far from Liverpool. I had to go there once for work purposes, the weight of how depressing it felt was visceral. It made me feel like I was imploding. Even the exterior felt dystopian and grim.

EricNorthmanYesPlease · 06/01/2023 18:44

Barrow in Furness is creepy as hell.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 06/01/2023 18:44

I don't get mystical feelings about places, and most of the places people have mentioned seem fine to me.

But...Beckton. Who decided to build thousands of human habitations in a thick miasma of faeces? I literally can't get away from there quick enough. I don't think it can be healthy to live in that.

SweetSakura · 06/01/2023 18:44

Oh yes and Middlesbrough.

I surprised myself and liked Hull though. Had a lovely meal in the marina, found a great bookshop and thought the Deep was well worth the journey.

smileladiesplease · 06/01/2023 18:44

Barnstaple total dump

BurtonsRevenge · 06/01/2023 18:45

Primrose Hill for me

Alwaystheplusone · 06/01/2023 18:45

Anyone slagging off Torquay has never had the joy of going to Decades nightclub. Everyone from the age of 18 to 60+ dancing to 80s music and loving life :)

Puppers · 06/01/2023 18:45

Aberystwyth. I felt an overwhelming sense of dread, hopelessness and oppression the entire time I was there. It just felt totally bleak. Like being in a Scandi noir film. Never experienced anything like it before or since. Nothing happened while we were there and we had no reason to feel unsafe. It was bizarre.

LadyOfTheCanyon · 06/01/2023 18:45

Recently I was massively underwhelmed with Colchester. I was expecting the Bath of the East but it was not to be so.

Bristol always gives me unsettling vibes. No idea why. It's always rained when I've gone which won't have helped.

Not a huge fan of Margate and it's wanky Down from London personality as a thin veneer over a very poor and marginalised area.

Thatsasmashingblouseyouvegoton · 06/01/2023 18:45

Plenty of these I'm nodding along with
But the only place I've felt malevolence was at Stonehenge. Bright summer day, loads of people about. Could not wait to leave.
Never felt anything like it.

DouglasTea · 06/01/2023 18:46

Beziers in France

Just to add that it's not just the UK that has God-awful places.

But also Stranraer. Had the weirdest experience there: like being on hallucinogenic drugs but I was stone cold sober.
