Just have just visited Newport for an appointment, we weren’t there long, toilet stop and cuppa in Asda, half hour appointment in city centre and then got lost on the way out but felt very uneasy the whole time were there. It had quite a menacing feel to it and even on the bare aesthetics of the city seemed quite run down with a lots of old closed pubs, shops etc…

I would actually go as far to say it made me feel quite unwell but I guess that would just be coincidence!!

We actually live rural Devon so not even like I’m not used to the odd lay line of two but I was quite relieved to get back on the road…

Has anyone else felt that about a place before?

North Yorkshire.
Blaneau Ffestiniog.
Lincolnshire gives me the real creeps and the people are strange to put it mildly.

Seen Tintagel mentioned a couple of times,I love it there.Same with Birmingham, the closest City to me and I love the centre.

The whole of North Yorkshire?

Needmorelego · 06/01/2023 18:13

Westfield (Shepherd's Bush) shopping centre.
Urrgh. Horrible place..
Loud. Everything echoes. Bright lights. Confusing layout.
It's in.... Lego Store....and then run out as quickly as I can 🤣

My hometown, Salford - went back recently and just felt my mood deplete completely on the car journey there - I actually almost turned the car around (I had a perfectly normal, happy childhood btw) I just couldn’t wait to leave, I’d be happy to never go back - It’s grotty, grey and feels poverty-stricken. I had to visit family in Worsley nearby (which is considered a better address by people from Salford) but that’s just as grim, just has some bigger houses. The nearby canal and woods are frankly dangerous and I wouldn’t go there alone. I think I’ve possibly become a snob but it really is depressing, much like a lot of Manchester.

Blackpool - sinister.

I find a lot of towns in north Wales and Anglesey very depressing but some of the beaches and countryside are beautiful.

I live in the south now and would never move back up north.

Every UK town high street is now betting shops/charity shops/nail bars, there’s not much difference between any of them

don't forget pound shops and vape shops along with fix your phone screen shops

verdantverdure · 06/01/2023 18:14

Crowthorne sets off alarm bells for me.

LuluBlakey1 · 06/01/2023 18:15

Sunderland town centre- shopping area - is really rough and can feel intimidating.

HikingforScenery · 06/01/2023 18:15

Cornwall

Surprised no one's me mentioned Crewe yet.
Possibly because most of it's been demolished recently Grin Some local wag keeps altering the "welcome to" signs so they read "Welcome to sCreweD"

My list - Stoke on Trent, Rhyl (aka Stoke-On-Sea), Ellesmere Port, Croydon, Bradford, Wrexham, Huddersfield, Brighton, Stockport, Carlisle, Blackpool, Ludlow.

Fair point it has. 😄

It's only been in the pipeline for decades.

Trymein · 06/01/2023 18:16

Clapham
Portsmouth
Luton
West Ham
Watford
Winchester - I know this is supposed to be nice but it gives me the heebie jeeebies for some reason!!

JPR15 · 06/01/2023 18:16

Hever Castle. Such a weird, sad feeling. And I went on a busy, sunny day!

keepaweatheredeye · 06/01/2023 18:16

Forgot about Salisbury! Very strange vibe, lots of drugs and homelessness mixed with the attempt to be a "market town". Was very happy to leave!!

Spanielsarepainless · 06/01/2023 18:17

Plymouth. Heard it described on Radio 4 at lunchtime as a pile of fossilised elephant droppings.

Nocutenamesleft · 06/01/2023 18:17

Brighton used to be beautiful.

it’s an absolute shit hole now though! The rubbish is appalling.

SweetcornFritter · 06/01/2023 18:17

An overnight say in Pontypridd, in the early 80s, scarred me for life it was so grim.

Yeahrightthen · 06/01/2023 18:18

Surprised no one's mentioned Crewe yet.

Good lord, how could I forget Crewe? I think it’s because I tried to forget id ever been there! Awful.

allthegearandnoideaatall · 06/01/2023 18:18

Keighley
Huddersfield
Blackpool
Scunthorpe
Grimsby
Middlesborough
Nottingham
Brighton
Morecombe
and most recently Northampton. All awful.

Samsonsmum · 06/01/2023 18:18

Aldershot. It's not twinned with anywhere but it does have a suicide pact with Blackpool

candlelightflora · 06/01/2023 18:20

Ilford
Basildon
Southend
Nottingham
Peterborough
Rochdale

I actually quite like some of the places mentioned on this thread, e.g. Hemel is definitely mixed but does have some nice areas.

Nope333 · 06/01/2023 18:20

Cheltenham fills me with doom…

I do like Chepstow though (thought I would mention as close to Newport)

Not a fan of Lincolnshire it depresses the life out of me. Sorry!

From a south London suburb viewed as the dregs of society (unfairly may I add 😜) so not sure what I say is if much use!

HikingforScenery · 06/01/2023 18:21

Paisley Glasgow

purplejungle · 06/01/2023 18:21

crazycrypty · 06/01/2023 16:24

Milton Keynes. It has a dystopian present town feel to it. I feel like the "government" is watching me.

This

Hedjwitch · 06/01/2023 18:21

Glasgow.

FuzzyPuffling · 06/01/2023 18:21

Cornwall. Lovely scenery, everything else shit.

Songsareliketattoos · 06/01/2023 18:23

Scunthorpe, utterly depressing
