Stopping pocket money due to smoking weed in the house

16 year old ds has repeatedly been caught smoking weed in his room. Him and his friends all smoke weed regularly. Although I'm not happy about it, there's not much I can do about it. However, I draw the line at smoking in the house. We've had many screaming arguments about this. I've come to the end of my tether and said if he does it again no more pocket money. So now I have to follow through.

Why do I feel guilty? Well I know partly why, because his friends parents seem to be so liberal and I end up being made to feel uptight, controlling etc. I'm so upset and fed up.

and before people accuse me of being a pothead or even really advocate for mj, I’m not. I don’t use the stuff. I just find people who are ridiculously blasé about alcohol getting upset about a substance that has very similar properties hypocritical.

a false equivalence

a vineyard vs a legal cannabis farm would be a reasonable comparison. They do exist in some countries. I don’t much see the difference in living next to either.

We don’t live in some countries though. We live in this one. Where it’s still illegal and where people are harmed in the production and sale of it.

I work in a cat B men's prison. Full of the worst criminals. Drugs feature HEAVILY. So many young lads from 18 up serving heavy sentences

It's grim!

Get him away from the weed op

Its not a gateway drug

Yes it is you dipstick. What do you think a gateway drug is?

Kanaloa · 05/01/2023 14:25

And the comparisons to other countries is irrelevant. The legalized production and sale in other countries is not at all similar to the production and sale of illegal drugs in this country.

And even in one of those countries where it’s legal, it is not legal at 16 years old.

LlynTegid · 05/01/2023 16:13

You are someone to be applauded for not accepting it.

You are not happy to see young black men stabbed to death, not happy at the killings in Mexico and Columbia (and other places), not happy at people driving under the influence of drugs, not wanting to encourage by inaction the Albanians coming to the UK in small boats.

Friends parents are indirectly racist.

@Obviouspretzel

Most of the thread does not seem to agree with you. Can you not sell it to us in a more articulate way perhaps?

I'm not here to try to sell you anything, nor do I care if most people on the thread agree with me. I'm simply giving my opinion on the thread topic. Everyone doesn't have to agree do they, that's the point of a forum. There are many people here that disagree with my post, and that is fine.

  • IDontCareMatthew Weed smoking is the start of it.....it's a slippery slope

Do all you can to stop it op!

a slippery slope FGS!!! It’s nota gateway drug, he won’t be on crack next week, Jesus wept*

Hmm.... well I work in a men's prison on a youth wing. I can confirm you are wrong. But hey, what do I know?

Good for you, I’ve worked with youths too, you cannot say anyone who smokes weed goes on to the hardcore stuff. The amount of people I know that have only smoked weed and have no interest in anything else more, not even alcohol.

threecupsofteaminimum · 05/01/2023 20:20

Throw him out? Well done you've put him straight onto the streets, that'll go well

Cannabis comes in very many guises, if you don't understand this and think it's all like the strong stuff long term prisoners use then please, educate yourself. Yes, I do know what I am talking about.

Putting all weed under the same umbrella is the same as classifying half a shandy with a bottle of absinthe.

If he's 16 he's trying it out with his mates, he may not even like it, he probably doesn't, it'll be curiosity.

Educate him, but coming down like a tonne of bricks is absurd at they juncture and highly detrimental to your relationship.

Sorry, lol at those saying to call the police. You do know that it's an online report unless you're literally bleeding to death these days.

They wouldn't do a a thing.

Speak to your son. Gently, oh, and listen to him.

threecupsofteaminimum · 05/01/2023 20:27

Having read your post again, OP, the problem is you've allowed them in your house to smoke it and the boundaries have not been made.

I'd waltz in with a big bin bag and scoop it all up for the bin whilst firmly stating the party here is over and will not be convening,

I suspect they'll find a garage or something to sit and smoke, it if they're really going to continue, in the meantime perhaps an alternative activity needs to be proposed.
