Or am I just the worst parent?

My kids are ready to go back I'm not fussed either way.
But they are autistic and despite doing amazing with the holidays they thrive on routine and need the consistency school brings.

Paddleducks · 02/01/2023 08:17

No, I am not ready because it means that I have to go back to school too. The intense feeling of dread is creeping in this morning…

SlashBeef · 02/01/2023 08:46

The Christmas holiday is my least favourite. They spend weeks getting hyped up and feral beforehand, then they bicker way more than usual. The weather sucks so its not enjoyable to go out for long days outdoors. My eldest misses the routine and structure of school and gets overwhelmed with the Christmas chaos. Much prefer the summer holidays.

Yeah and tbh so are they. It’s been a fun and busy holidays but we all want a bit of routine now. So I’ve enjoyed being off the treadmill but now is quite like to get back on.

Comedycook · 02/01/2023 08:58

I've hated school holidays since covid. Dh now wfh all the time. School holidays just remind me of lockdown now with everyone being at home. It's not them..it's me. I just want one day where I'm alone.

DoubleNit · 02/01/2023 08:59

Usually, but this year I've worked through the holidays and tbh I just really want some time with her. I'm considering pulling a sickie just to get a bit of a break.

lollipoprainbow · 02/01/2023 09:03

No my dd is autistic and loathes school I'm absolutely dreading Wednesday.

TribeD · 02/01/2023 09:08

Christmas "Stuff" started happening for us the last weekend in November - travelling to see family and exchanging gifts, etc. School started doing Christmassy things from the first week in December so we've had 6 weeks of busyness and lack of routine.

I know a lot of the busyness is of our own doing; we've arranged to do things, so a quiet January isn't feeling such a bad thing.

Mol1628 · 02/01/2023 09:20

Mine are ready to go back. They have lots to do at home but they really miss the structure and constant learning at school. I feel I can never provide ‘enough’ here. They’re just full of energy and ask constant questions and it’s just so draining. School seems to satisfy something in them that I just can’t.

I have enjoyed relaxed bed times, no rush in the mornings, but im really ready for us all to go back to work and school.

Ivalueloyaltyaboveallelse · 02/01/2023 09:22

No I love having mine at home. I don’t feel we’ve had enough chill days. Christmas holidays are always so busy And full on. Also I’m not looking forward to school run again and getting my very anxious youngest autistic Dc to go back to an absolutely rubbish mainstream school that doesn’t understand any of his needs. I doubt they have his one to one sorted again for this term clearly an EHCP doesn’t seem to mean much to them.

RelativePitch · 02/01/2023 09:25

Mine go back Wednesday and it just doesn't feel long enough, I really miss my children. I was at an independent school in the 80s and we had 4 weeks off at Christmas! Bliss.

I totally understand this.

Forever42 · 02/01/2023 10:14

Ha, I'd like this too but am never alone! Work outside the home so don't have any days with nobody at home. I would have thought that's the same for the majority of people but maybe not with more people who?

Maestro12 · 02/01/2023 10:22

No - they are old enough now not to be too full on. Not looking forwards to the school runs and also the eldest hates school ( SEN) and it will just mean returning to endless meetings where I try and get the school to meet his EHCP.

I'm a sahm and kids are school age. Prior to covid, DH was in the office every day and I had six hours by myself at home every week day. Bliss. I got lots done around the house. Now he wfh which is just about bearable but combined with school holidays, I find it awful. Like I said, it's not them. It's me. I really need alone time.

DoubleShotEspresso · 02/01/2023 11:22

@DelphiniumBlue thanks, yes this did wander through my thinking, but the school have suddenly become obsessed with attendance stats and so not sure what to do for the best.
Post Covid our DC seems to pick up every possible bug and for some reason I'm yet to figure out always takes a few days longer to "bounce back" than their peers. I hate all this stuff but school are mostly brilliant with all else so it's a difficult balance to strike.

Like a pp, I totally understand too. Wfh has totally changed things and I have flashbacks to those lockdown days shudder

And this too 👆🏻 She was in floods of tears last night about returning to school and full of anxiety about friendship groups/being left out.

Paddingtonsmarmlade · 02/01/2023 16:23

I can't wait, ds struggles with the less structure of holidays and I struggle without 5 minutes silence/alone time. I find the holidays in the nicer weather easier as we're not stuck inside.

OneCup · 02/01/2023 17:03

No. The holidays have gone so fast. I'm really not prepared for them to end. Really can't face going back to the school drudgery, drop offs, pick ups, that WhatsApp group....

lollipoprainbow · 02/01/2023 18:06

@SkankingWombat same with my dd, the anxiety has ramped up so much today. She really struggles with friends and no one has been in touch with her at all over the holidays it's heartbreaking.

Ah yes I'd forgotten about the endless school emails and class parties 😩

OP, not just the little darlings either. 16 year olds can fuck off.
