According to my DM you need to wish people Happy New Year before midday on 1st January....

My dm just rang me at 11:58am to wish me HNY. We have a slightly prickly relationship.

She's been annoyed at me previously when I've text her HNY rather than rang her, so it was on my mind this morning that I must ring her today.

Anyway, she rang and I said I was planning on ringing her shortly to wish her HNY when she told me it must be done before midday...!

Has anyone else ever heard this? According to my dm it's common knowledge...or is she just mad as a box of frogs?

Never heard of it. Wonder if she's mixing it up with the April Fools Day thing, where you have to catch someone out before midday otherwise YOU'RE the fool?
Either that, or she really is as mad as a box of frogs 🤣

Sugarfree23 · 01/01/2023 12:15

Mad as box of frogs!
It's normally first greeting in January so they'll be people who'll be back at work next Monday wishing others a HNY

FictionalCharacter · 01/01/2023 12:16

She’s making it up.

viques · 01/01/2023 12:16

I think she is mixing up April Fools Day with New Year. 😁

Happy New Year to you ( 15 minutes late, oops)

Good job she isnt in Scotland. People wish you HNY right through bloody January. Drives me nuts. We dont wish people Merry Christmas or Happy Birthday weeks after the event, but HNY just goes on and on.

PenanceAdair · 01/01/2023 12:21

Haha she's the latter.😅

It's still new year whenever you wish it.

Because birthday and Christmas day are one day only. New year is new year, so it's fine to wish someone a happy new year whenever you see them for the first time in the new year.🙂

FrazzledFirefly · 01/01/2023 12:30

Thanks all - happy new year to you all too. Oops - half hour late 😆

There is a bit of me not doing right for doing wrong where she's concerned so there is an element of that (hence a bit of a prickly relationship).

She is utterly bonkers though!

Haha- she obviously wouldn't be impressed by that.

I’m old, (64),and yes this was a thing in my younger days.

fancyacuppatea · 01/01/2023 13:20

Nah, she's a crackpot.

Text her and tell her you're pegging your second load of washing out.

Then stand back and wait for 🎆

She did stubbornly state it was a thing years ago. She's early seventies...can I ask what region you are?

Haha- funnily enough I don't think she's superstitious about that part of NY day....I'll ask her next time

Ah, OK, thanks. My mother is Welsh so I wondered if it was a regional thing...

Ha I was about to say not if you're Scottish! You wish something new a happy new year the first time you see then in the new year, even if you've called/texted! I won't see some family until February half-term and will say it then 😁
