Vivienne Westwood has died

Oddly enough, I was thinking about her just yesterday. I knew little about her, except for her rather insightful remark about the word 'fuck' as used on the Today programme by one or two of Bill Grundy's guests. She was amazed that some people could be so uptight about a word that was used almost constantly. I'm not quoting but she said something similar. She had a point.

No doubt her career as a fashion designer will be the source of more informed tribute.

This is sad. I admired her clothes and personal look, though not her labour relations.

Proudofitbabe · 29/12/2022 22:14

I watched the SATC film while wrapping Christmas Eve, and of course the Vivienne Westwood fabulous wedding dress was a big call-out. Her and Pele legends in their fields both gone on the same day, RIP to both.

BabyFour2023 · 29/12/2022 22:16

A true British fashion icon. RIP Dame Vivienne.

I just finished watching that movie now ... and then opened MN to see this thread.

She seemed so vibrant, it's hard to believe she's gone.

SnarkyBag · 29/12/2022 22:19

wow by strange coincidence I bought a Vivienne Westwood watch today. RIP.

Supersimkin2 · 29/12/2022 22:19

She was completely vibrant and very sharp and very nice. She noticed things - always.

Gutted.

Supersimkin2 · 29/12/2022 22:20

And let’s all send sympathies to her DH Andreas, who must be wrecked tonight.

whoamitojudge · 29/12/2022 22:21

She designed the beautiful red Virgin Atlantic cabin crew uniform too. 👠
May she rest in peace

I was so sad to hear this, I have several pieces of hers, most of them are timeless. The very first was a black velvet corset my mum bought me for my 21st! I have worn in for 30+ years and my dd borrows it now. I'll pull some of my eBay purchases out tomorrow for sure.

She was an absolute legend.

Jellykat · 29/12/2022 22:26

I remember her 'sex' shop in Kings road, i was so intrigued although only young.. I've still got a couple of Worlds End pieces from the early '80s, such a rare feisty incredible woman, such an important part of fashion history!
Sad news indeed..

Carrie Bradshaw wedding dress 😍😍

PenelopeTitsDrop3121 · 29/12/2022 22:37

I'm gutted. I've always admired her :( I remember when she appeared on Wigan. I think Sue Lawley was covering for Wigan and the audience were all laughing at her models wearing her latest looks. I've never felt so angry watching it 😔

I loved her. when I was a teen she collaborated with Brintons Carpets in fantastic costumes made from carpets which were used in adverts. I saw the dresses in an exhibition and the way they were styled/cut etc was so intuitive somehow. Apparently they had to be built onto the models and weighed a ton.

Two legends indeed. Pele is the greatest (Messi next in line).

Westwood is the biggest fashion designer of the punk era. That alone secures her legacy.

covetingthepreciousthings · 29/12/2022 23:19

For anyone who loved Vivienne, and haven't seen them go have a look at her lockdown fashion pictures that her partner Andreas Kronthaler posted on his Instagram during Covid times. Just so full of joy, and showed a different side to her I think. My favourite was the cushion belted to her head outfit Grin

Such an icon, and like PP said it's not a title to be thrown about hastily but she really was an icon.

I hadn't seen these before, just had a quick Google, incredible designs but yet can imagine they were quite hefty!

Bulbstarglitterball · 29/12/2022 23:26

Honestly this one is heartbreaking. When I first moved to London my two best friends worked for her and I was lucky enough to go parties wearing her clothes and it shaped my youth. It feels like part of my me has fallen away. A true pioneer in every sense of the word.

Neverplayleapfrogwithmrpipes · 30/12/2022 01:12

Absolutely devastated. I am a lifelong fan of her creativity. I wrote my university dissertation all about the aesthetic of punk.
She was a one off xxx

mondaytosunday · 30/12/2022 09:21

Interesting that Pele is getting far more mentions on Radio 4 this morning.
She was such an original designer and personality; always entertaining and started out as a school teacher! Imagine being taught by her as a child!

Mabelface · 30/12/2022 10:00

Glossop was and is very proud of her. She'll be missed.
