How many books have you read this year?

Just reached my goal of 52, so one a week. Looking back through my goodreads list though, it all seems to be pretty much one genre! 🤣
How many have you read, and are they all the same genre or do you read more widely? What were your faves?
Mine were:
Midnight Library
The nothing man
The reading list

  1. I have a non sleeping teen.
I'm halfway through two others.
Draconis · 29/12/2022 16:51

6 plus a few audiobooks. Aiming to improve that.

SamphirethePogoingStickerist · 29/12/2022 16:58

I honestly have no idea. I am a voracious reader. We have 3 or 4 magazine subscriptions, large bookshelves, I have an ever growing collection of creative textile books, and I go to the library every week.

About 5 years ago I decided to 'read the library'. Starting at A I take 6 books at a time. I have restarted to catch up with new books, ordered in whole series, and when they reorganised for Covid and had to read from Z backwards. I am at J now.

I would guess I easily read 3 or 4 books a week.

But that hardly matters. What does matter is that we all read as much as we want to. It should be a joy, not a chore.

Some of these numbers are so high! I could only dream of that much reading time! How often are you all reading?
I suppose it differs tho as I work full time, 3 dc and a long commute, so although i read at night, I often fall asleep! In fact, i cannot sleep without reading myself to sleep!

Oh, of course! Not a chore at all and yes, a total joy! I would love the time to read more. The goal was a sort of wouldnt it be cool to have read a book a week type thing rather than a to do list, if that makes sense?
I love your idea of reading the library!

105 books on my kindle. Plus quite a few physical books.

CakeCrumbs44 · 29/12/2022 17:05

I've only got back into reading this summer. For the first half of the year I probably read 5 books. For the second half I've read 67. What changed is I discovered romance books and I LOVE them

Natsku · 29/12/2022 17:05

I didn't keep track but I checked my library history for the past year and I read 49 books from there plus I know I read several of my own books so I'd estimate between 55 and 60.

I plan to keep track next year.

Natsku · 29/12/2022 17:06

Oh I forgot the books I read on holiday in the summer that I got from charity shops and left there, so another 5 or so.

IndeedDanielJackson · 29/12/2022 17:10

I did the challenge on goodreads this years, ive never 'tracked' my reading before! I managed 63. I think Lilac Girls was my favourite. Honestly though I tend to forget what I've read once I've read it and can barely remember half of them.

ICouldHaveCheckedFirst · 29/12/2022 17:11

Er, 19.
Which is probably better than last year, but hopefully fewer than next year.
Favourites: The Thursday Murder Club (Richard Osman); The House by the Loch (Kirsty Wark); The Last Runaway (Tracy Chevalier); and Fatal Isles (Maria Adolfsson).

Decafflatteplease · 29/12/2022 17:16

I used to keep a list in a lovely notebook but I've lost it ☹️ started it in 2017 so absolutely gutted I can't find it as loved looking back.

I'm going to guess around 20 for the year which I'm very pleased with!

Taswama · 29/12/2022 17:20

56

About 20 non-fiction, rest fiction.
8 or 9 in another language (French or German).

Some of my favourites: Regeneration by Pat Barker, Under a Pole Star by Steff Penney, A place of execution by Val McDermid

Also: Vaxxers , The Children's Inquiry , The Way we Eat Now , Some Kids I taught.. , The Death and Life of American Cities .

All the books (except one) were by women this year which forced me to be more adventurous in my non fiction choices.

daffodilandtulip · 29/12/2022 17:25

Around 45 ... read one of Gillian McAlisters at the end of November then had to read every one in a row! Had the latest one for Christmas so looking forward to everyone clearing off so I can tuck in!

ouch321 · 29/12/2022 17:27

People count the books they read... That's strange.

PoppyEyebright · 29/12/2022 17:28

Mama1980 · 29/12/2022 16:25

204 - nearly all history or historical fiction books. I don't mix up my genres much either.

Ooh @Mama1980 would you mind sharing a list- I've got through Andrew Taylor, Laura Shepherd-Robinson and some Philippa Gregory recently but after more..

TimeforaGandT · 29/12/2022 17:28

85 - a mix of current and older books, short easy reads/re-reads (such as Agatha Christie) and some really long ones (Game of Thrones, A Little Life, some Sharon Penman)

Favourites include:
The Marriage Portrait - Maggie O’Farrell
The Bookshop - Penelope Fitzgerald
Mothering Sunday - Graham Swift
In A Good Light - Clare Chambers
My Cousin Rachel - Daphne du Maurier

Whywhywhywhy3 · 29/12/2022 17:31

I'm on my 35th book of the year. I've read more in previous years, but this year was a tricky one for me in a lot of ways, so I've read less.

Jux · 29/12/2022 17:34

60/70 don't actually keep count but that at least.

Lookingformymarbles · 29/12/2022 17:35

65 - some quick reads, some non fiction and a few meatier tomes

Lots of good books, (a few not so good) but 3 standouts are
The Great Circle by Maggie Shipstead
The Island Of Missing Trees by Elif Shafak
The Wolf Den by Elodie Harper

Those of you that read 100+ where do you find the time? Retired maybe? No tv? (am a sucker for a good binge watch!)

ApolloandDaphne · 29/12/2022 17:36

My DDs keep track of the books they have read but i don't. I am going to try it this year. My issue is what counts as having 'read a book'? I listen to loads of books on Audible. Do they count? I am also studying English lit. Do these books count? I say they do but my DDs say the Audible ones don't.

Jux · 29/12/2022 17:39

ouch321 · 29/12/2022 17:27

I used to keep a notebook for all the books I read, with short notes on the general themes and how much I enjoyed it (or not). It was jolly handy if anyone asked me recommendations - which lots if people did back then.

It would have made it easy to keep track of how many I'd read too, obviously, but until MN, no one ever asked me that!

SweetSakura · 29/12/2022 17:41

53 😊
I have been ill which has helped as have meant I have had to rest at times rather than being more active. I don't manage to read every day as my job involves a lot of reading.

I track them on storygraph as I like all the pie charts.

Some of the standouts for me have been Infinite Country (patricia Engel), early morning riser (Katherine Heiney) Not forgetting the whale (John ironmonger) and house of glass (Hadley Freeman) but there were loads that I enjoyed

(Nb this number does not include the 3000 rainbow fairy books I read to DD , or the 85 times I read the same book to my toddler nephew Grin )

TheFluffiestCat · 29/12/2022 17:41

Just finished number 200. I got a kindle and realised that I could still read even if H won't have the proper light on, so my Mumsnet and Candy Crush use have plummeted.

I mainly log them in the storygraph app because it is a good way to get other recommendations, but it does also motivate me and make me feel better about the fact a lot of my other hobbies have fallen by the wayside at the moment due to illness
