What could I get in Edinburgh for £600k

Starting some thinking about where I want to move to and Edinburgh keeps coming up in my lists.

just wondering if anyone has any insight of what sort of property you could get for around £500-600k

i would be after a garden and preferably parking (I can’t parallel park - I’m a lost cause). Two/three beds. Not a major/reno but happy to decorate.

kind of area I’d like would be not busy centre but somewhere where I can walk to cafes, parks etc.

i really am only just starting research - but am just wondering what the property market is like there. I’ve had a browse on Rightmove etc obviously but got myself overwhelmed with it!

thanks if anyone has any insight!

It really depends where you want to live. The nice areas are Grange, Morningside, Marchmont, Stockbridge, Inverleith and Comely Bank. Deans Village, the West End and the the New Town are also lovely but might be too central for you.

There are a lot of old tenement properties in Edinburgh, so if you look for a basement/ground floor flat you might be able to get a private garden, otherwise it will be shared gardens.

Parking is mostly on street, but there are some newer build properties in the nice areas that would have private parking, but it would mean you wouldn’t get a private garden.

The best thing to do is visit and spend some time walking around areas to see what they are like, what kind of properties are available etc. Looking online just isn’t the same!

Also make sure you look at ESPC for properties as well as Rightmove.

Fab thanks. Yes I think I’m going to try and get up there for a couple of months to really see if it could suit. Thanks!

Good luck with the potential move! I moved to Edinburgh about a year ago and love it here ☺️

Edinburghmusing · 27/12/2022 22:58

@Christmascracker0 oh great! Did you know people before you moved? Have you found it a good place to settle?

Edinburgh is like any other city, you can get a lot for that money and much less if you live highly desirable areas. Late DH grew up there and the area that was home has been gentrified beyond recognition.

Christmascracker0 · 27/12/2022 23:17

@Edinburghmusing my brother lives near Edinburgh so I was able to stay with him for a bit, then rented a place in Morningside for a few months until the purchase of my own flat (in Bonnington) went through.

I had a few acquaintances from school/uni here already but everyone is really nice so it is easy to meet people!

You'll get somewhere lovely for that money in walking distance to cafes etc but also far enough away from being right in the city centre, but bear in mind you'll probably need to compromise on a private garden as it's very much a city of tenement flats. You might find a house/private garden in Morningside or the Grange but may be around (or just over) budget.

Areas like Newington and Bruntsfield are nice (Newington has some lovely houses) and very close to city centre, but they are also very studenty and noisy so taking a risk.

Edinburghmusing · 27/12/2022 23:22

Thanks for further info!

I’ve got a dog so private garden is very high on my list so will factor that in.

I’ve just been browsing on Rightmove again - there are some looooovely places 😁

Happy to advise if you see any on RM you like!

wesayno · 27/12/2022 23:27

A cold, probably.

Wrap up warm.

VinoDino · 27/12/2022 23:29

You could add Craigleith, Blackhall, Ravelston, Trinity/Wardie, Corstorphine maybe, to your list. Gives you a better chance of a garden.

BashfulClam · 28/12/2022 01:41

Duddingston, just beyond Arthur’s Seat may be worth a look.

Edinburghmusing · 28/12/2022 08:07

Thanks all! Am making notes!

Stockbridge/Comely Bank has a nice village-y feel and always seems to be full of people walking a wide variety of dogs.

bob1985 · 28/12/2022 08:35

If you're wanting to be super central parking and private garden are what you're going to struggle to get.

If you're will to go a little further you'll have more luck

For example (still pretty central)

espc.com/property/38-powderhall-road-canonmills-edinburgh-eh7-4gb/36126514?sid=195901

Sure you'll be aware but remember offers over system

DwightShrutesGlasses · 28/12/2022 08:43

It's the not easiest place to buy with parking and a garden, we moved out of Edinburgh to get a family house we were happy with. Is it just you and the dog? That makes things a lot easier.

I love the North of Edinburgh and have lived all over there. Don't rule out Portobello - technically not part of Edinburgh but it is essentially attached and has a beach. Loads of shops, cafes etc and a thriving community. Housing is expensive but you should get something.

TokyoSushi · 28/12/2022 08:45

Oh you're so lucky! We used to live there in the early 2000s, it's the most beautiful place!

Fleurdaisy · 28/12/2022 08:48

This can’t be right can it ? I think this is west of the zoo and Murrayfield?

Scotland’s property market has an offers over method in most cases, so I would be looking at home £550,000 and less.

Right move isn’t letting me link via the app

HandScreen · 28/12/2022 08:50

Gosh, I don't know, you could try looking on Rightmove? Or are you wanting us to do that for you?

BernardBlacksMolluscs · 28/12/2022 08:51

how happy your life must be with that attitude @HandScreen !

Romper · 28/12/2022 08:53

Shannon is lovely, very friendly and there is often an annual “Dogs of Harrison Park” calendar produced as is so popular for dog walking. One of the local cafes has a photo wall of visiting dogs and a jar of dog treats. Canal path runs along the park and it’s a short nice walk through Merchiston to Bruntsfield and Morningside with Craiglockhart hill around the corner.
