Anyone up? So worried about DD

Currently on hold to 111 but I'm so worried. DD who is 3 has had a temp since Christmas Eve, it's been up and down ranging between 38.6 and 39.7 but it's currently at 40.7 and I can't get it down. She's snotty and complaining of a sore head and is now bringing everything including calpol/nurofen back up, the last lot she brought up was clear with what looks like specks of blood in it.
Has anyone had similar and what was it?
I know there's some horrible bugs going around at the moment so it could just be that but the fact I can't get her temperature down and what looks like blood now in her sick is really worrying me.

A 7 hour wait to see a doctor?! 😱

iwantahippopotamus · 26/12/2022 10:11

Hope all's okay, Mama. Thinking of you🌻💐

BrutusMcDogface · 26/12/2022 10:13

Hope she’s ok and is seen quickly. There are so many horrible bugs around at the moment.

Hopefully she’s feeling better and you’ve managed to get seen, if not already then very soon

anyolddinosaur · 26/12/2022 10:14

There will be highly trained doctors in a&e today - just not enough of them when covid is still both taking them out and resulting in a lot more people being admitted. If the nurse thinks this little one is enough of a priority she wont wait 7 hours. With limited staff those whose life is at risk get seen first.

However I agree with the need to advocate for a child. Have they given a syringe and has the temperature come down at all? Suppositories are not popular with patients so they are not much used here, it is a good way to get medicine into those who cant keep anything down.

Pondere · 26/12/2022 10:19

A 40.7 temp for a virus isn’t unusual, and it sounds like that’s what she has.

And that they’ve made you wait 7 hours rather than seen immediately is a good sign, as they don’t think it’s an emergency.

Good luck OP, I hope she’s ok and you’re back home quickly.

watchfulwishes · 26/12/2022 10:27

A lot of people dismiss everything as 'just a virus' but sometimes it needs to be checked, I would have gone too if I had a young child at 40+ with no way to provide medication.

Yes, welcome to Tory paradise.

A 7 hour wait to see a doctor?! 😱

It was an 11 hour wait when we went a few weeks ago. Fortunately we were taken straight through after being triaged but there were people who were there when we arrived at 3am who were still waiting in the waiting room when we were taken to a ward at 4pm.

Scottishskifun · 26/12/2022 10:33

Hope your DD is OK and you get seen soon well done for getting her there quick. Hope you get seen soon unfortunately it's a bit mental at the moment with strep A adding to issues. We were 4 hours for a 9 month old baby with a high respiratory rate and fever which wasn't budging.

indecisivewoman81 · 26/12/2022 10:36

I hope she gets seen very soon and IV meds are given poor little thing.

My daughter got sick once like this at a similar age and it was a kidney infection. It's very scary but you're in the best place

ArabellaScott · 26/12/2022 10:37

Hope she's feeling better very soon, OP, and you get a rest.

Actually suppositories don't tend to be offered here very much at all, I've been in with DS and they've kept trying calpol and I've had to ask if he can have a suppository. I am a dual trained nurse so I know they exist, they're licensed, they will have some in and if a child is vomiting their medication up we always offer as an alternative so not sure why many many many settings don't. Cost I expect and takes a bit longer/not as pleasant to administer.

I'd say often parents do need to advocate for their children, as long as they are polite and aren't out to undermine then what's the issue.

I think it’s also cultural, they are much more used on the continent, I grew up in a french environment and it was standard, but being British I and my parents were horrified at the idea of having our temperature or medicines taken per anus.

rainbowstardrops · 26/12/2022 10:42

Hope she feels better soon. A 7 hour wait for a doctor? What on earth has gone wrong with this system! Well I know what's gone wrong, it's just bloody shocking.

SirVixofVixHall · 26/12/2022 11:25

I hope she is better soon OP. It is so frightening when they are small .

Pleasegodgotosleep · 26/12/2022 11:46

Hospital for temp of 40 or over. Good luck.

Hm2020 · 26/12/2022 12:40

Good luck op your in the best place hope you’ve been seen by now.

TempyBrennan · 26/12/2022 12:54

We’ve been in the same position over the last few days OP. Luckily for us her fever broke and finally reduced just as we were arranging childcare for the other kids!

hope she’s ok OP.

worriedmama202 · 26/12/2022 13:02

Just an update for you all, thankfully we were seen pretty quickly after my last post. We were sent up to paediatrics for monitoring and she managed to keep some apple juice and calpol down. Her temperature has improved massively so hopefully now she's keeping things down we can keep ontop of alternating calpol and nurofen. They said that she has the flu but were happy enough with her obs for us to come home. so we've just to continue doing what we are doing and monitor her closely, any change we've got the okay to take her straight to paediatrics.
Honestly with the way everything is with the nhs at the moment I was prepared for a long wait and a fight on behalf of DD but the doctors and nurses that we dealt with were absolutely amazing, I cannot fault the care we received.
Thankyou for all of your support and suggestions! I'm running on caffeine until hopefully an early bedtime tonight.

I'm so glad that all has turned out well and that yous didn't have a ridiculous wait.

Goingforarun · 26/12/2022 13:29

Thank you so much for getting back to us with such good news.

ZeViteVitchofCwismas · 26/12/2022 17:59

Fabulous op!!

What a worry!!

worriedmama202 · 26/12/2022 18:50

I'm honestly so relieved, it's crazy how much she has improved in such a short space of time, temperature is now fully under control and she's spent the afternoon going between playing with her new toys and lazing on the sofa.
Really appreciate all of the well wishes and hand holds getting me through, I was quietly panicking this morning.

So glad that she has improved. My dd had swine flu at a similar age and it was scary how unwell she was, it was hard to keep her temperature down.
