Good Morning Mumsnet! What's everyone's plans for Christmas Eve?

I'm just having ten with my cuppa before heading up to wake the girls. One load of tea towels to be washed to day & then that's it for a few days washing wise!

We're off to the local market for our veg and cheese. We always walk in on Christmas Eve, then home to see my dad, and then I'll walk a couple of things down for Nanna.

After that, we'll put some Christmas music on and prep for tomorrow's roast so I don't need to put much effort into cooking; just turn hob rings on & put them in/out of the oven.

Tonight, I'll do my nails & chill. The girls have plans to watch something together.

Once they're settled; presents will go under the tree and I'll fill their stockings so thier dad can put them on the ends of their beds. It's the one night they'll sleep early even though dd1's almost 16, and dd2 is 13 in a few days 🤣

Whatever you're up to, have a lovely day 🎅

Christmas Eve is my second least favourite day of the year (New Year's Day is my most hated).
I love Christmas and just want it over with so I can get to the big day.

I don't have specific plans but will be walking the dogs, doing a couple of loads of washing, cleaning so the house is gleaming for tomorrow, probably watch a film with the kids this afternoon who are hyper with excitement.

This evening I'll probably watch TV or play my Switch until the kids are asleep.

ItsACrater · 24/12/2022 08:58

We have breakfast with Santa although kids (11 and 7) not convinced because he should be very busy on Xmas Eve. Obviously 11 year olds last year of believing I would say.

I have pretty much 75% of my wrapping still to do including DH and kids. DH will do kids stuff and family with me.

i have a lot of stuff to wrap.

need to pick up Xmas breakfast food too. Heading to in-laws tomorrow.

I’d like to get a walk in today.

Mumlifedc · 24/12/2022 08:58

DH is finally taking the rubbish to the tip.
I will put up a few decorations (house is a building site to not put any up yet)
Need to wrap all the presents but got to get the kids out of the house first
Nice nibbles and snacking lunch to make
Taking the kids to panto tonight
Carol service before panto
Takeaway tea after panto
Find the kids stockings
I really want to dye my hair have a long shower and paint my nails if there's the time.

food shopping done, plan to do some light housework then okay games and watch movies

KittensNotMittens · 24/12/2022 09:00

Argh we haven’t got crackers! Which shops have good ones this year? I love a cheesy joke, a quiz question and a half decent ‘prize’ (like a keyring, bottle opener or mini screwdriver set).

so disorganised this year…

Eggsley · 24/12/2022 09:04

I'm usually at work Christmas Eve so it's lovely to be off today.

We're having a slow start to the day, need to pop up to Tesco to get tonight's dinner and I know it will be mayhem. Then taking the dog for a walk, then this afternoon we are going for a walk up to the forest with our friends and then to our village pub for a drink.

Then home for dinner, baths and bed for the DC, bring presents downstairs and then chill with DH watching a film and drinking Baileys. Off to my parents for Christmas dinner tomorrow.

Hope everyone has a lovely Christmas!

Most crackers are plastic/tat free now so just have a sticker or wooden ornament.
Otherwise it's the little metal stuff - nail clippers, tweezers etc. You might find some better ones reduced today, but could be tricky.

This is a lovely cosy read. Merry Christmas to you all and love to anyone struggling/ill - I'm right there with you!

It's my baby's first Christmas but husband and I have covid so plans with family are cancelled. I alternate between disappointment and feeling so rubbish that I don't care. Reminding myself that DD won't remember it anyway! My mum has sent over turkey and trifle ingredients, bless her, so will prep that today and hope that we are all feeling a bit better by tomorrow 🤞

yoshiblue · 24/12/2022 09:09

Food prep with Classic FM for company
Out for National Trust walk with DS this pm
(Husband at home wrapping presents and cooking the dinner!)
Out to church for mass 8-10pm!

Decafflatteplease · 24/12/2022 09:10

Morning @lucysmam you've just reminded me I haven't done my nails, it will have to wait until tonight I think!

Today is my favourite day of the year, it's always got a lovely holy exciting atmosphere.

I was up early prepping so having a few quiet moments to myself with tea and just the tree lights on.

The gammon is in the slow cooker ready for this evening, going retro with tonight's meal of ham chips and egg as I left it too late to order our traditional hotpot supper from the bakers!

Off to mil today just for a couple of hours for s buffet and seeing family. Then christingle service then home for dinner and getting ready for father Christmas!!

Once DC asleep DH and I will open a bottle of wine and the cheeseboard amd watch carols at kings we love it, this is when Christmas finally starts for us.

Then it's early to bed!

freckles20 · 24/12/2022 09:10

Oh crikey this thread isn't what I expected! What a lot of wonderfully organised people with fabulous days planned.

I have a horrible headache so the day hasnt started well. DH will be at work until 7pm. He is totally exhausted so will probably be struggling after work.

I have a teenager sleeping who is also struggling.

I somehow need to clear the house, arrange it to receive 14 people for Christmas dinner tomorrow, make a lasagne for our tea, prep veg for tomorrow, finish wrapping, deliver cards and gifts to a dozen people, do a load of washing. Also need to be home to see my mum who is insisting on popping over despite the fact that she's joining us tomorrow, she will expect festive jolliness.

I am totally overwhelmed, tired and know that it will take me all day and most of the eve to get all this done.

What is really like to do is relax, watch some Christmas TV, have a walk and build our gingerbread house with DS.

ColinRobinsonsfamiliar · 24/12/2022 09:12

It’s cleaning madness today!
We built a wall yesterday in the living room so the dust and mess is unbelievable!
Cleaning so we can eat dinner tomorrow dust free!

Got a mountain of laundry to get through too.
Really busy day today.

This is a really silly question but can you just turn up to midnight mass? We have a beautiful church just down the road and live in a new area so I am thinking about going this year

Yes you can

iwishiwasonhol · 24/12/2022 09:16

working 10-10 shop shuts at 8 tho so once its turned around and tidy for boxing day we can leave so hoping to get out for 9, home glass or 2 of wine teenagers may or may not come out of there room and watch a movie with me ,chuck presents under tree have more wine ha ha

Hobbesmanc · 24/12/2022 09:20

Classic FM on at the moment. I love the Carols. I'm pottering around starting on tonight's Christmas Eve buffet. We always host friends and neighbours this evening and are lucky enough to be invited to friends tomorrow so today is the only real prep day

I've already boiled the hams in coke. Thanks Nigella. M and S seafood platter and a load of pastry things. Desserts done. Big trifle snd cheese cakes

So this morning it's a couple of Delia winter salads to put together. Chicory pear and blue cheese and warm mustard potato salad plus Sprout slaw. That's a new venture. Hope it's nice cos it's a lot of shredding.

DP at the barbers and then picking up last minute stuff. Cream, rolls. He will glaze the hams and set the table and get a fire ready. Hopefully we can have a few hours later to watch a movie before guests turn up. Maybe National Lampoon Christmas Vacation.

Feliz Navidad

Check timings. I used to go with my parents to our local one years ago. I noticed that this year there's only an 8pm service. No midnight mass.

MrsWidgerysLodger · 24/12/2022 09:24

Travelling back home! We'd come to PIL for a big family Xmas and smallhuman has promptly been sick everywhere so we're packing up tj car to go home and have a very quiet and poorly Xmas just the three of us. Gutted.

SummerWillow · 24/12/2022 09:28

DH very unwell with cellulitis, on IV antibiotics as outpatient - relieved he avoided hospital yesterday but it's still a possibility if he doesn't improve. Just me at home with dd2 and dogs. Got to cover DH's work later (self employed). Don't feel very Christmassy!!

nancydroo · 24/12/2022 09:28

DH is reading Vietnam book, I'm under a duvet watching the latest James Bond movie while looking at our January household budget 😱 the kids are playing on their phones. We are going to have a day with fresh PJs, movies and munchies

Natsku · 24/12/2022 09:39

It's the day we celebrate. I got up early and made the breakfast ready (rice porridge and sweet star bread) before the children got up and now we've had breakfast, stockings and the tree presents and the others are playing new games on the switch while I have a cup of tea. Soon I'll put the ham in the oven and then we'll visit FIL for lunch, try and squeeze in a visit to the graveyard to put candles, drop off presents to sick BIL and family and then home for treasure hunt then dinner.

Later on father Christmas is coming (booked a sober one - a drunk one is not too fun for the children) to give the rest of the presents and then we'll play our new board games

Deathraystare · 24/12/2022 09:39

I am working from 7-2 today and Christmas Day. I managed to come in half an hour late. I was really tired last night. I realise I didn't put my phone alarm on. Never mind, these things happen!

pompomdaisy · 24/12/2022 09:39

Chilling in bed with a cuppa. DH off to supermarket for Christmas Eve sushi for the girls. We will take the dog for a walk. Go and collect daughter from work at 4.30 then final tidy up after last nights open house party and chill in front of the TV with a lovely supper.

Deathraystare · 24/12/2022 09:40

Oh! Forgot - after the eternal hunt for eggs after work I must wash my coat. It is filthy!

Girasoli · 24/12/2022 09:50

A busy day today, DH is just about to take DS2 into town to buy some last minute coffee beans for BIL and a nice cookie from the cafe, while I get on with cleaning.

DS1 is sleeping at DMs but will be coming home before lunch and can help me prepare deserts for tomorrow.

Christmas eve Mass this evening - probably just DS1 and I, DS2 I think would just try to run up and down - we'll see, we might be brave and all go 😊
