Good Morning Mumsnet! What's everyone's plans for Christmas Eve?

I'm just having ten with my cuppa before heading up to wake the girls. One load of tea towels to be washed to day & then that's it for a few days washing wise!

We're off to the local market for our veg and cheese. We always walk in on Christmas Eve, then home to see my dad, and then I'll walk a couple of things down for Nanna.

After that, we'll put some Christmas music on and prep for tomorrow's roast so I don't need to put much effort into cooking; just turn hob rings on & put them in/out of the oven.

Tonight, I'll do my nails & chill. The girls have plans to watch something together.

Once they're settled; presents will go under the tree and I'll fill their stockings so thier dad can put them on the ends of their beds. It's the one night they'll sleep early even though dd1's almost 16, and dd2 is 13 in a few days 🤣

Whatever you're up to, have a lovely day 🎅

Hello Lucysmam my DC are 16 and 13 now too, and I remember when yours were little Smile I've been on here for years (name changed since back then). My DDs love xmas, and still want to put out a carrot for the reindeer, which is utterly ridiculous! Grin

I'm going for a walk at a nearby forest area with my DDs this morning, coming back to put together lunchtime buffet for family who are coming to mine for the afternoon - parents, brother, SIL and their DC.

Then this evening will be a simple bowl of pasta followed by a xmas film with chocolates. DH will be in the kitchen preparing the veg for tomorrow, maybe with a bit of help from the DDs.

HelpMeGetThrough · 24/12/2022 08:15

Will nip out and get a final present or two for the OH. No idea what to get. Main presents are done though.

Brother is around this evening, but I'm going easy on the booze.

TeddyTed · 24/12/2022 08:19

Happy Christmas Eve! I always love this day. We’re up early to have a last potter round the market this morning and to pick up some boxes of chocolates as final presents. Hopefully we’ll treat ourselves to a hot chocolate as we have a wander (if it’s not too busy at Costa). Then we’ve got family coming at 4pm for a bit of a buffet, so I’ve got plenty to prep when we get home. The huge ham is already cooked, I’ve got cakes baked and ready to assemble and all the other bits to sort. I am proud of myself for being ahead on things like present wrapping this year, I’m normally so last minute. Once everyone has left tonight we’ll collapse on our sofa with a glass of wine and watch the Christmas Father Ted episode which is another of our Christmas traditions. 🎄🎄

Last gift to get. Wrapping. House looks like a midden. Food shopping…

got the lurgey and really not ‘feeling it’!

GreyhairedHobbit · 24/12/2022 08:23

I have got a batch of pastry to make for mince pies and a quiche. I might put another loaf on. There is a small ironing pile to do as I like to get it all up to date before Christmas Day. I have presents to wrap and will do that while listening to carols. Later we are singing around the wards at our local hospital and then Midnight Mass. So a lovely day ahead!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 24/12/2022 08:23

We’re away this Christmas so no rushing about or prepping or stressing to be done- it’s glorious! Dh and I will leave the dc’s with (adult) dd and go for a run, then we’re going to a local town to mooch about, pick up a last few bits we couldn’t get at Tesco yesterday. The elf is delivering a box with hot chocolate, sweets, marshmallows and a board game for later, need to engineer that somehow…. Lovely chilled day!

mrsrobin · 24/12/2022 08:23

Off to the shop to get some mouthwash - need to keep my mouth ultra clean as half a tooth come away while eating dinner last night :(
Gutted as is really awkward to eat (am not in any pain - as yet). Pf course dentist closed until after New Year! Going to be a bit awkward....on a plus point I might lose a bit of weight!

babyyodaxmas · 24/12/2022 08:26

Was up at 6 DTD with DH then wrapped all the stocking gifts. Heading out for a run now, then home for breakfast (bake at pastries and juice) with teens some baking heading to ILs this afternoon for dinner, pub and midnight mass. I almost prefer it to Xmas day.

Squarerootofpi · 24/12/2022 08:32

Happy Christmas eve everyone! Having my second coffee in bed while dd plays minecraft beside me and ds provides a running commentary. We only need to go out for milk later and will combine it with a detour to the park with ddog.

This evening we'll get the Christmas eve boxes out. I've bought them fake oodies from Tesco with Christmas Puddings all over them so can't wait to see them in them! Then we'll all snuggle under a blanket with hot chocolate and popcorn to watch a Christmas movie. I have of course, left all the wrapping until the last minute, but I've got wine and nibbles to make it go quicker! I feel incredibly happy 😊

Happy Christmas Eve everyone. Your plans sound lovely OP.
I have been laid up with a bug for the last three days, negative tests but very Covid like. DH and DDs mercifully ok so far I think, though I did hear the youngest sneezing in the night which is how I started. So glad we were all stocked up etc beforehand. Need to get myself downstairs and prep veg and Yorkshire pudding batter, bread sauce. We're supposed to be bringing dessert to my parents for tea tomorrow but really don't feel up to going out and worry about passing anything on. Still have massive headache sorry throat and woozy feeling.
Just remembered I haven't bought table presents...

babyyodaxmas · 24/12/2022 08:34

😂😂😂

Largethighsbadeyes · 24/12/2022 08:37

Nice dog walk, home for a shower then off to meet family this afternoon.

This evening have a last hoover round, wait until DS is in bed and wrap the last couple of presents and then have a glass of wine or 2 until I know he's asleep so I can put the presents out.

Christmas eve is my favourite day of the year

itispersonal · 24/12/2022 08:37

I'm having a chilled day today - broke up on Wednesday (work in a school) and had 2 busy days Thursday and Friday with dd. Helped my dm set up at her house for Christmas Day last night- table set, tree up and general tidy. So today I'm doing the bare necessities, definitely a pjs day.

I'll stick a meat in the slow cooker for sandwiches later and this evening as usual we will watch Myppets Christmas carols with homemade (by dp) waffles and Prosecco.

girlmom21 · 24/12/2022 08:38

This is a really silly question but can you just turn up to midnight mass? We have a beautiful church just down the road and live in a new area so I am thinking about going this year

lugeforlife · 24/12/2022 08:38

I need to get up really.

Get some stuff out of the freezer for dinner tonight (we are having a bit of a Mexican feast which dd2 is looking forward to more than Christmas dinner). Get dd1s present down from the loft and wrap it. She'll be in her pit til 12 so plenty of time.

Next layer of the Triffle to do as well plus I'll get out some muffins and mince pies

I have 2 loads of washing to get done plus a tidy up before my mother descends this afternoon.

We did want to go for a walk around our local NT but it's shut and the other one is booked up so we think we'll stroll to our high street and pick up a coffee. I may get hundreds and thousands for the Triffle if the supermarket doesn't look dreadful.

Some light meal prep for tomorrow and then the feast. I want to watch see how they run with a snowball later after some carols.

CornishTiger · 24/12/2022 08:40

Sending my DH to the supermarket as he’s not sorted Boxing Day arrangements til I broached it myself yesterday with the family direct. Been asking for weeks……

He’s still in bed. I’m chilling with the children.

lugeforlife · 24/12/2022 08:41

@girlmom21 yes you can but usually gets packed.

I always fancy it but never manage it because it's so busy

Yes, you can just turn up, it is a public service like a Sunday one. Lucky you to have a beautiful Church near by. I hope you enjoy it. Midnight Mass is my favourite.

Mummymidwife33 · 24/12/2022 08:43

I'm going for a spa day! A deal came up at a gorgeous spa near by so I'm heading there with my sister in laws for a day of chilling, massage, gossip and drinking Prosecco.

Did loads of prep plus baking and cleaning yesterday so feel ready. Just been up with my youngest who has a North Pole breakfast and a Christmas Eve box. He's SO excited! DS and DD will spend the day with my husband watching films and taking the dog for a walk. DH will probably also be wrapping his presents because he's organised this year and bought them two days ago!

I'll come home this afternoon and we are having a cheese fondue followed by our book exchange. Then it's lie on the sofa, reading, drinking mulled wine and eating the chocolate house we have instead of gingerbread one. I love Christmas Eve.

AwkwardPaws27 · 24/12/2022 08:44

An extra long dog walk for AwkwardPup as despite best intentions tomorrow's will probably be a shorter one.

It's DS's first Christmas and I decided to make him a stocking but I haven't finished it - so I need to find some time for that! Sewing & 6 month olds aren't an easy combination...

echt · 24/12/2022 08:45

It's evening here in Melbourne. I've just got potato salad to make for tomorrow then pick up DD from the station. The house is tidy, decorations and tree up, the weather gloriously sunny, and the street that unearthly quiet you get on public holidays. The front garden is swept, cushions on the benches and the solar lights put up. Coils smoking to help fend off the fecking mozzies.

The evening will be spent in the front garden, catching up with DD, eating sausage rolls and looking at the stars, which should be good tonight. We'll go round to the show houses who do mega-lights later.

inappropriateraspberry · 24/12/2022 08:47

Up half the night with DS, think he has worms! So absolutely shattered - hoping for a chance to nap this afternoon when DH gets home.
Turkey crown is out of the freezer (almost forgot), all wrapping done, just need to build a bike and dolls house tonight.
Will go to pharmacy later for Ovex - just what you want for Xmas! Bedding and towels are now being washed.
Hopefully get some baking done later. We need mince pies and a cake!

Chelsea26 · 24/12/2022 08:52

just lying in bed with DP and a coffee that DS1 made - bless him. DS2 still in bed too.

DSD and DSS went to their mum’s for Christmas yesterday and my boys are off to their dad’s for Christmas this morning so DP and I will walk the dog through the woods and I might drag him for a pub lunch.

MIL coming over later and we’re having chilli for dinner (already made) and then heading to two different neighbours houses for drinks this evening.

We’re spending Christmas Day with my parents tomorrow so don’t need to do any prep and all the presents are wrapped and sorted for Boxing Day when we get all the kids back!

Merry Christmas everybody!

ToTryToDelight · 24/12/2022 08:54

Merry Christmas Mumsnetters
We’re off to the cinema to see Avatar with DS16 and DSS15 with ILs.
then home for 5ish and take out with other ILs.
House was cleaned yesterday and we opened Xmas eve boxes yesterday so had our PJ day then.
have a good one!
