How many presents do your dc have to unwrap?

I realise this might cause a riot but I'm just wondering what the average is?

My own dc don't get "presents" to unwrap from family as we are in a different country so they get money to spend in the sales (also older so appreciate this)

This means they only get from dh and I, I aim for ten presents each which costs a fortune when you have four children and they are all older so gifts more expensive. It never looks a lot when it's laid out though and even though I know big piles on social media could all be plastic tat and I've no desire to get into that kind of competition I sometimes second guess myself.

The dc also get stockings which is over and above the ten gifts but that's filled with cheap bits that they like and sweets etc.

Wow! It must be so time consuming to get 10+ presents for each child .. we get 1-2 per child (have 3) and they get a couple more from family

I mean, what else do people do on Xmas day? Confused Surely opening presents is one of the main events? What else would you spend the day doing? I'm genuinely intrigued as if you don't have many presents to open it's unlikely you'll spend the day playing with them, so what else do you fill the day with that you need to not spend time opening presents?

Visit with friends and relatives, go to church, go for a walk together, eat nice food, write thank you notes, play together...it's not all about unwrapping presents for most families I know.

harrassedmumto3 · 23/12/2022 05:37

I'd need to be skint before my kids found two presents under the tree. Like, seriously on the bones of my arse. It's the one time where I choose to go nuts.

Haveahappyholiday · 23/12/2022 05:58

I don’t know any families in real life where the children get two presents. Unless we’re talking play stations, laptops or iPhones. When do they get those?

Gosh I don't know?! Maybe we actually spend time with each other play and hang out. Horror!! 😆

We watch each other opening presents after breakfast, but that's quite a minor part of the day. Rest of the time is spent actually spending time as a family, isn't that what Christmas is about?? Hmm

Ansumpasty · 23/12/2022 07:08

Mine children are 8 and 10. 10 year old has 11 things to unwrap (his are more expensive) and 8 year old has about 50 things. I do wrap everything individually, so lots of those things are small gifts like pens/lip balm, etc.

Mine would get an iPhone for Christmas, and that would be their only present. Never had a laptop or PlayStation. But they would only get one present normally, plus some bits in stockings. They don’t get anything from relatives, but their grandma will give them some money.

Wolfout · 23/12/2022 07:15

I have 3 DC and they get about 10 presents each, plus a stocking with chocolate, stationery etc.

We spend about £150-£200 per child.
It does include a stack of books.

(From family they will get approx another 5 gifts each.)

LemonDrizzles · 23/12/2022 07:18

Ten is a great number considering there are no other presents.

Diaries, journals, nice stationery can help round up the number.

Do you really spend all day opening presents?

Even with 10 presents I find it takes up too much time, so I hold some back for boxing day.

We make food, eat food, go for a walk, play family games, watch a Christmas film, play Christmas music and dance about, eat more food.
Christmas Day isn't about presents.

Krakenwakes · 23/12/2022 07:51

A lot of our Christmas Day is about making, and eating, food. We tend to try out new recipes. We start talking about new things to try about a month before. We don’t do a traditional turkey dinner, but will make a Yule log, make mince pies. We will watch a film, play a board game, do a jigsaw, a quiz. Etc.

This thread is rank.

People spending £1000 on each child at Christmas? No wonder the next generation are growing up to be such spoilt, entitled brats. Who the hell needs 30 presents to open on Christmas Day?! Do these children value anything?

Oh, stop being so joyless and judgemental.

WorrieaboutFIL · 23/12/2022 08:31

I'm finding the extravagance and consumerism on this thread nauseating tbh.

£1000 each. My DD is 6 and I'm struggling to find any toys she doesn't have or things she needs. So if I bought her £1000 of toys she would be totally overwhelmed, wouldn't play with most of them and it would be a total waste of time, money and the planet's resources.

The only way I could think of spending £1000 was if I bought an antique rocking horse and a steiff teddy. Seriously how much crap much you get for £1000????

Hugasauras · 23/12/2022 08:36

Not all day but probably 2-3 hours with breaks. It is one of the main events for us 🤷‍♀️ I guess we don't bother with walks and we don't have visitors coming in so we have loads of time in the day to get everything done.

Hugasauras · 23/12/2022 08:39

And it wasn't so much about what other people choose to do do but what pressing things there are that people think spending a couple of hours of opening presents is too long!

Boshi · 23/12/2022 08:49

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 23/12/2022 00:18

Eating, spending time with family. Even if there were 10+ presents it still wouldn’t take all day to open.

Games and just spending the day together as a family as it’s not often we all spend the whole day together.

Piscesmumma1978 · 23/12/2022 08:56

I don't count them, I do it on value. £275 each this year. It doesn't look like much though!

One big present each, smaller gifts and a stocking.

It's awful. Especially the sneery posts about kids only having two presents under the tree.

wejammin · 23/12/2022 09:03

Not counted but I have 3 kids and they've got varying values of gifts, so DC1 is getting a bike that cost nearly £300, DC2 only asked for bedding and craft stuff so she's probably got about double the amount to unwrap because I've got her a lot more little things (not all fancy, some things like pens and blu tack), DC3 is in the middle, he likes hot wheels and Lego which are pricey but not at the bike level.

People get so judgemental about other people's choices! Do what works for your family, and be happy for everyone else doing what works for them!

Agree. I wouldn't be able to actually spend this much on anything meaningful (DC too young for any big ticket items). I don't understand how anyone can have 20+ gifts, just seems ridiculous
