How many presents do your dc have to unwrap?

I realise this might cause a riot but I'm just wondering what the average is?

My own dc don't get "presents" to unwrap from family as we are in a different country so they get money to spend in the sales (also older so appreciate this)

This means they only get from dh and I, I aim for ten presents each which costs a fortune when you have four children and they are all older so gifts more expensive. It never looks a lot when it's laid out though and even though I know big piles on social media could all be plastic tat and I've no desire to get into that kind of competition I sometimes second guess myself.

The dc also get stockings which is over and above the ten gifts but that's filled with cheap bits that they like and sweets etc.

Some of these have got to be a joke surely.

Sack full each from Santa, around 10-15 each from us, then gifts from 2 sets of grandparents, 7 sets of aunties and uncles and 2 sets of great grandparents.
No I don't live in a mansion and yes I am having a stress about where all the gifts are going to live 😅

Bloody hell my dd could only dream of this I'm the only relative who buys for her we don't have any family.

Older DC here too (10 and 13).
They receive a stocking full of small wrapped presents (practical things like deodorant, a book, chocolate orange, a couple of little fun things, usually a game or something from a charity shop, DS gets CocoPops, DD gets chocolate spread). I either wrap in newspaper or gift wrap recycled from last Christmas.
Then later in the day they get a main present each from us and one from each other – plus presents from family and a few friends as and when we see them over the Christmas period. So, not a huge pile under the tree, but still quite a lot!

1 from us, 1 from Santa, 1 from the other sibling, 4 little things in stocking - so 7

bluesky45 · 22/12/2022 10:37

This year, mine have 1 and a half presents each plus a stocking of about 6 items if I remember correctly (fidget toy, bath bomb, mini dig kit, book, that sort of thing, each a few quid).
They have 1 Santa gift each and 1 gift to share between them from me and DH. The gift to share is a big one though and it's something they really really want. Hoping they don't notice the lack of gifts when they open the big surprise!
They do also get physical gifts off family, some on Christmas day and some on boxing day etc.

lulalulalula · 22/12/2022 10:59

5 main presents and 8 wrapped small presents in the stocking each.

If no stocking, are some of the 20 things that would be considered stocking presents? DS could be getting two, or 7 if you include food, clothing and toiletries.

Yeah things like toiletries sets, sweets etc. I think stocking presents are things that actually fit inside a stocking (the ones we have hung up are tiny so I couldn’t think of many gifts that would fit inside)

Small stocking from Santa and 15-20 each from us (one from each other) under the tree

We spend £150-200 each including the stockings. No tech or big ticket items like bikes, those are saved for birthdays. My eldest loves a big Christmas and we can't afford to do that and include higher value things, his most expensive one for Christmas is £40

Deadringer · 22/12/2022 13:00

We put toiletries and chocolate in stockings but also bigger things like switch games etc.

I do the same ,they are adults ,still comes in at a thousand every year ,no matter what I do.
its depressing
ive 4 dc with 2 of them also having birthdays on top on Christmas

Do these adult children do the same for you and DH or is the extravagant gifting a one way street?

blackheartsgirl · 22/12/2022 19:01

i have four and when they were younger it was usually 10 to 15 presents each plus little bits in thier stockings.

as they’ve got older it’s usually about 3 or 4 plus stockings but the price I’ve spent on each is around the same.

we don’t really have any extended family bar my mum and the dc have a present from her so no other gifts. I tend to over compensate really and they don’t get much during the year either

Helpmesortit · 22/12/2022 19:36

I forgot I had pictures, this is what I got my dc. I don’t think it’s too much at all. No stocking, the 3 gifts to the left side are Santa gifts and the rest is from us (there’s a couple items missing from each pile)

It's interesting how a few people (like me) wrap associated gifts together to make it count as fewer presents so as not to feel OTT, whereas others wrap everything separately to make it count as as many as possible. Very different personalities and circumstances there! I can't even quite explain why I don't want the number of presents to be "too many" - its clearly the same stuff regardless of how I package it.

Those of you whose kids have large numbers of presents to unwrap (10 or 20+) on top of small stocking bit.s How do you do that and how long does it take? We sit around and each open one in turn. It still takes a good while with just a few each! I'm guessing you would have to speed it up a whole lot otherwise you would literally be there all day.

I give them a red bull before they start. Gets them ripping those presents open like feral animals and we are finished in no time!

Mummadeze · 22/12/2022 20:26

10 ish from Santa (not expensive, things like an annual, an umbrella, a hoodie), 5 from us as she is getting a Switch and some games, accessories. Then she gets a stocking and about 7 presents from grandparents and aunt.

leithreas · 22/12/2022 20:28

It's 8 each this year I think? They are teens so it's a bit different to small children. We don't really have extended family to buy for them either so 8 is pretty much their lot for Christmas but I know they'll be delighted with what they've got.

leccybill · 22/12/2022 20:38

Only have one DD who is 12.
About 25 presents plus stocking. Spent £450 this year. Last year double that as she got a good laptop.

She will get about 10 presents from grandparents, then money from aunties.

Ddog has 5 presents and her stocking too.

bluechameleon · 22/12/2022 20:42

They have about 6 each from us. Plus a stocking. We are spending Christmas day with the PILs so they will get a few more from their grandparents, aunt and uncle and great nan.

bluechameleon · 22/12/2022 20:43

Actually it is more than 6 because they each have a parcel with 3 or 4 books in. 6 parcels not 6 presents.

Lbnc2021 · 22/12/2022 20:47

About 18 presents each for my two youngest and 5 for my eldest and some money. They only get presents from me, no other family bother.

Theonewheretherewas4 · 22/12/2022 21:10

I have four dcs and I would think they have around 10 presents each, we don’t do stockings so there’s a mixture of present values, we do have a rather large extended family so dcs do get quite spoilt with gifts.

TooManyEggsInTheBasket · 22/12/2022 22:27

I spend around £100 per child. Younger one less because I can get some bits second hand. This equates to around 3/4 presents each plus stockings maybe another £20-30.

Stockings include pants, socks, a book or two and bubble bath. Few chocolates.

In return I get about 2 presents. 1 from DH and 1 from secret Santa. Small family.

That's enough for me and enough for my children. I'm sure they feel differently but I feel they have plenty!

OhILoveDoughnuts · 22/12/2022 22:43

My kids are 3.5 & 1.5 years old.

We do -
Something they want
Something they need
Something to wear
Something to read

Plus stocking. This year has 6 things in each.

And they have a joint gift from Santa.

So 10-11 things each. Though a lot of this is secondhand, so not much money has been spent.
