How many presents do your dc have to unwrap?

I realise this might cause a riot but I'm just wondering what the average is?

My own dc don't get "presents" to unwrap from family as we are in a different country so they get money to spend in the sales (also older so appreciate this)

This means they only get from dh and I, I aim for ten presents each which costs a fortune when you have four children and they are all older so gifts more expensive. It never looks a lot when it's laid out though and even though I know big piles on social media could all be plastic tat and I've no desire to get into that kind of competition I sometimes second guess myself.

The dc also get stockings which is over and above the ten gifts but that's filled with cheap bits that they like and sweets etc.

Lots of cheap bits in places like The Works, Home Bargains, B&M. Chocolate oranges are £1 in Tesco. Aldi had lots of Christmas chocolates around £1 too.

And you wrap all of these?

I’m not sure. I think about 12-15 for DS who is 14. It is all stuff he will wear and use so an X box game, Spotify membership, smellies, clothes and trainers. He will likely get a t shirt from an Aunty and £50 from my cousin but that’s it. We don’t have any other family.

MistyIsland · 22/12/2022 07:09

Mine have 2 x main presents 🎁 from me and dh

then a stocking each…currently sits at 8 each but I am awaiting parcels from the start of December (unlikely to arrive now) I may pop out tomorrow and get 1 or 2 more bits I also may not and see what Amazon can deliver something

They don’t have a massive amount as they haven’t asked for much and don’t really need much.

On Christmas Eve we are going ice skating then will come home and the elves will have delivered their new Christmas pjs (I’ve done this since they were babies) and we will have a hot chocolate from the hot chocolate station and watch the polar express (it’s our family tradition an activity, new pjs and a film)

please note neither of mine believe anymore but they have told me they want to keep this going

Tallulasdancingshoes · 22/12/2022 07:48

@Liorae I don’t wrap the chocolate/sweets, but yes, everything else is wrapped. The unwrapping is part of the experience and exciting for kids.

I don't understand this?

Passthecake30 · 22/12/2022 07:54

I tend to aim for 5-6 main presents and 10 small Santa presents. They are teens so mainly get money/vouchers from other people so it’s nice for them to have something to unwrap.

I think mine have about 10 each plus a stocking with cheap bits and chocolate in it. The 10 includes nice wooden toys for the toddler and 2 hardback books and a jumper for DS as well as some Lego and play doh and then his main present. We try to leave the plastic stuff for family members to buy...there will be plenty of that too!

Wtf has being vegan got to do with how many presents your DC has. And surely as a vegan you want to reduce waste and not add to it so a 100 presents is extremely excessive?

I assumed she meant £100. Which makes sense if they're vegan as you can't just buy £1 cheap sweets and chocolate as they usually contain milk or gelatine. Vegan treats are more expensive usually.

How many presents do people have themselves?

cantba · 22/12/2022 09:10

5 children. Around 5 presents each plus stocking. It still looks fucking obscene under the tree.

I aim for zero. Managed it one year but PIL aren't playing ball anymore so I have to tolerate one

GingerFoxInAT0phat · 22/12/2022 10:09

Feel like I’ve stumbled into an alternate universe. My 2 dcs (13+9) get about 20 presents each. No stocking and not a big wider family. The cost is fairly high but doable.

Where we live kids get piles upon piles of gifts and people spend thousands. I don't know anybody who would give a couple of presents for Xmas.

mast0650 · 22/12/2022 10:16

It's interesting how a few people (like me) wrap associated gifts together to make it count as fewer presents so as not to feel OTT, whereas others wrap everything separately to make it count as as many as possible. Very different personalities and circumstances there! I can't even quite explain why I don't want the number of presents to be "too many" - its clearly the same stuff regardless of how I package it.

Those of you whose kids have large numbers of presents to unwrap (10 or 20+) on top of small stocking bit.s How do you do that and how long does it take? We sit around and each open one in turn. It still takes a good while with just a few each! I'm guessing you would have to speed it up a whole lot otherwise you would literally be there all day.

mast0650 · 22/12/2022 10:18

How many presents do people have themselves?
2-3 from DH
1 from each of my two sisters
1 small gift from each of my kids (or possibly a joint one)

Parents are deceased and ILs don't do Christmas presents.

No, probably not! 😂

Hugasauras · 22/12/2022 10:25

Oh it takes ages but when you're up at 6am or whenever with an excited child you've got plenty of time! Grin Our Xmas days are really relaxed, so we just open presents, have some breaks for tea, snacks, open some more, Xmas dinner is just whenever.

Yes we are certainly a lot mores short of time now with older teens! We'll be sitting round in pjs opening presents and suddenly realise that rest of family will be arriving for lunch any moment!

If no stocking, are some of the 20 things that would be considered stocking presents? DS could be getting two, or 7 if you include food, clothing and toiletries.

Hugasauras · 22/12/2022 10:29

I think having external people coming in for dinner changes your day a bit. We don't really have that - we stay with my parents and are there already and generally no one else comes, so we can just please ourselves with timings. If it takes till 3pm to open everything that's fine. There's no real time pressure to get anything done in a certain time frame.
