How many presents do your dc have to unwrap?

I realise this might cause a riot but I'm just wondering what the average is?

My own dc don't get "presents" to unwrap from family as we are in a different country so they get money to spend in the sales (also older so appreciate this)

This means they only get from dh and I, I aim for ten presents each which costs a fortune when you have four children and they are all older so gifts more expensive. It never looks a lot when it's laid out though and even though I know big piles on social media could all be plastic tat and I've no desire to get into that kind of competition I sometimes second guess myself.

The dc also get stockings which is over and above the ten gifts but that's filled with cheap bits that they like and sweets etc.

3 from Santa and 28 “stocking” gifts from us, but they range from Lego sets to hair clips etc

Someo · 21/12/2022 19:10

Roughly 12 each. I have three. I've used a gift list app on my phone to keep track. I have probably spent around 400 on presents and a round 20 on stocking fillers for all. There's are a combination of new and pre loved.

I miss when they were younger I found them much easier to buy for. I am lucky in that DD13 isn't very materialistic. My friends DD has asked for latest trainers and iPhone, my DD has asked for art stuff and a yoyo. I'm sure her time will come though.

Nutrigrainygoodness · 21/12/2022 19:10

Dd 13 has 10 but no stocking from me and DW
Probably 5 from my mum and dad (even though they weren't buying her anything cos she's had her Xmas present at the beginning of December)
2 from my friend
1 from my dgp
ILs have probably bought her loads 🙄

Mine have 4 presents each, they are 7, 5 and 2. They wrote a list to Santa on pre-printed paper with 5 spaces so I got most of what they wanted. Then they have a stocking each with a selection box, bath bomb/bath foam, blind bag/cuddly toy, sticker book/craft and a book. They'll also get 1 gift from my parents, 1 from my brother and pyjamas from my Aunt.

Mumuser124 · 21/12/2022 19:14

About 20.

KnottyKnitting · 21/12/2022 19:20

One DD doesn't have much to open from us ( and grandparents who gave money.) She desperately needed a new phone ( reconditioned.) The other has a mountain of them as lots of little bits and bobs but they are 24 and 26 so can handle it! ( DD1 earns well and is very generous so has bought her sister loads so she still has quite a few bits and bobs to open!) Still love to see a big pile of presents under the tree even though they are all growed up!

RandomSunday · 21/12/2022 19:21

I think it, largely, depends on the age(s) of the child(ren).

£100 buys a lot of presents for a pre school child but wouldn’t cover the cost of a present for a teenager.

My DC are all grown up and have the Christmas present angst. All my DGC are primary school age. Santa comes to nanny’s house and leaves 6 presents for each DGC. One of which they take home. The other presents stay at nanny’s so they have something to occupy them when they visit - whether that be two days a week, when their parents work, or once a month when they visit with their parents.

KnottyKnitting · 21/12/2022 19:22

Speaking of Christmas for adult children, this Harry Potter themed meme made me chuckle!

Lilbunnyfufu · 21/12/2022 19:24

Dd (15) 12 gifts none are a main gift. She never picked a main gift.
Ds (5) approx 15 mostly sensory things.
Ds(13 months) 16 lots of smaller gift a few bigger ones.
Ds (6 weeks) 4 cause what do you buy a baby
Nephew (15 months) who will be with us for Xmas has 10 from us and 5 from his mum. I brought extra so he would have a similar amount of gifts has my own children.

Everyone has a stocking with approx 10 items inside.

howaboutchocolate · 21/12/2022 19:26

About 10 presents and I think it's too many, I might keep some back to open around new year. But she's 3.5 so there are lots of new developmentally appropriate toys she can have. I bought most of them secondhand so there's more as they were cheap - I budgeted £100, plus a stocking.
We spent more on fewer presents last year as she got one large expensive present.

Isn't a massive pile of presents just a bit meaningless and overwhelming?

Grumpybutfunny · 21/12/2022 19:29

He's got 4 main presents then loads of smaller bits. Not as much as last year as he's got a VR headset!

We work hard and shifts (1 weekend a month) so he doesn't get as much family time as we wanted so I feel like we make up for it in spoiling him.

Mammyloveswine · 21/12/2022 19:34

About 12-15 each plus stocking then whatever they get off family.

Choccyoclocky · 21/12/2022 19:38

Around 25 per child (3 children - 4, 9 and 10). I have spent less than £175 per child and shopping from August and in the sales. I haven't gone into debt.

I think they will have around 15 to open from family.

Diploessence · 21/12/2022 19:41

This thread is rank.

People spending £1000 on each child at Christmas? No wonder the next generation are growing up to be such spoilt, entitled brats. Who the hell needs 30 presents to open on Christmas Day?! Do these children value anything?

Deadringer · 21/12/2022 19:51

Five dc mostly grown up, they get two wrapped gifts each then lots of smaller gifts unwrapped in stockings. I try to stick to 200 ish each but i am a bit over this year, as one wanted a new phone, another wanted a switch. When they were younger they would have also got a couple each from their grandparents, now they generally get money in a card from them. I hate seeing those massive piles of presents on social media, it's so braggy and probably mostly tat.

Lndnmummy · 21/12/2022 19:51

About 8-10 each. That includes from grandparents. We also do an experience like a sports game or a show which they love.

SparkyBlue · 21/12/2022 20:17

Probably about 6 or 7 each but the youngest definitely has more than the older two. Some gifts are just little things and not expensive. I don't do stockings

Your attitude is "rank". Why is it any of your business how other people do Christmas. Stop being a judgemental idiot.

I think you'll find the most "spoilt entitled brats" are those who get everything all year round. Not those who have ONE day a year (maybe 2 including birthdays) of having lots of new things.

Izipizi · 21/12/2022 20:41

3 DC here. We do a decent stocking and about 4 or 5 presents each. They also get maybe 6 each from various family members, plus we do a little secret Santa name draw for our kids to each pick out a present for one of their siblings. I guess that’s around 11 or 12 all in.

I’m genuinely shocked by how much some posters buy!

BooksAndHooks · 21/12/2022 20:49

About 10 under the tree in their sack plus their stockings. A few bits they’ve asked for and the rest usually things they need anyway like new football gloves, art supplies, pjs, clothes. I have started getting on Vinted now they are older and want named brand.

tiredfriday · 21/12/2022 20:59

I think it’s just under 20 each this year

I am pretty astonished that for some it’s only 1 or 2 but I understand we all do Christmas differently

Wind yer neck in 🙄

WondrousWinger · 21/12/2022 21:14

They each have a stocking of sweets, snacks, socks, pants, smellies, books, a couple of bits of fun tat.

Then they have a Santa sack with about 8 gifts in (santa doesn't wrap) and each have 4 wrapped gifts under the tree from me and DH.

Dc are 14, 12 and 5 though...5 year olds gift pile looks huge compared to the other two just due to age - his list (toy BBQ, play food, this bath boat set thing) all happened to come in frigging huge boxes (massive waste of packaging as the gifts themselves aren't all that big). The older two have sports clothes, fifa points and gaming bits so their gift pile looks pitiful in comparison even though it cost far more!

HandScreen · 21/12/2022 21:14

Eight each from Santa plus a stocking with 9 things in each. They don't get any presents from "us". They will also receive gifts from about 10 other sources - mainly books and clothes, but a few toys.

Startwithamimosa · 21/12/2022 21:19

2 or 3, we prefer to spend money on experiences instead
