How many presents do your dc have to unwrap?

student86 · 21/12/2022 15:54

I realise this might cause a riot but I'm just wondering what the average is?

My own dc don't get "presents" to unwrap from family as we are in a different country so they get money to spend in the sales (also older so appreciate this)

This means they only get from dh and I, I aim for ten presents each which costs a fortune when you have four children and they are all older so gifts more expensive. It never looks a lot when it's laid out though and even though I know big piles on social media could all be plastic tat and I've no desire to get into that kind of competition I sometimes second guess myself.

The dc also get stockings which is over and above the ten gifts but that's filled with cheap bits that they like and sweets etc.

DD will open:
5 from one set of grandparents
2+ a travel 'fund' from the other set of grandparents
3 from my sibling
2 from their godmother
10 from us (of which only one is significant)

AllThingsServeTheBeam · 21/12/2022 17:12

They have 11 each including stockings and 3 shared. Then whatever everyone else gets them. Probably another 8 each

Asd22 · 21/12/2022 17:13

10-15 each I have 7 kids to get for .

My 3 DS's have the same amount spent but not equal to open
DS1 6
DS2 3
DS3 3
They're 28,25,21 and I've spent £280 each
They get money from Granny and that's it

mondaytosunday · 21/12/2022 17:21

40 presents doesn't look like alot? Sounds like plenty!
Also what are you wrapping? I wrap everything, from the main huge present (a telescope) to the tiny moon filter attachment. I've even wrapped a tin of Oreo cookies for my daughter. They both have wrapped bath bombs and my son even has his fave footie team branded tooth brush under the tree! So looks like a lot, but monetarily one present is worth more than all the others put together. There are two presents for me under the tree, one from each child (I bought myself a made to order bedroom rug from a textile artist).

familyissues12345 · 21/12/2022 17:22

Not loads, about 4 each, but they aren't little any more (Sad) so requests tend to be expensive. I've got them a few daft stocking fillers that will make them laugh

WeightoftheWorld · 21/12/2022 17:28

From me and DH, one each plus a small-ish stocking of little gifts. They're only little though, we don't have much disposable income, we aren't Christian, and they get loads from our extended families. So we don't feel the need to buy them more when they get way too much anyway. Can barely find space in our house for all their toys!

Krakenwakes · 21/12/2022 17:29

They get one present each, plus a few silly stocking fillers. No presents from anyone else. They are older teens. They do buy little presents for each other as well, though.

Colourinsidethelines · 21/12/2022 17:33

My 2 DS have 10 each plus a stocking. But they are all fairly small things, and 3 of DS6 are books that he wanted. So nothing extravagant or hugely expensive! DD has 8 I think plus her stocking. She has SEN and doesn’t understand so hers are chosen a bit more carefully with her needs in mind and end up slightly more expensive which is why she has less. They’ve had £130 spent on each including stockings.

mamaduckbone · 21/12/2022 17:35

2 or 3 from us plus stockings with about 10-12 small things in, then presents from both sets of grandparents, 3 aunties/uncles, a godparent...that's still less than yours will have from you alone OP so I don't think you have anything to worry about.

smilingthroughgrittedteeth · 21/12/2022 17:35

4, 5 and 7yrs and they have 9 presents from us plus we wrap all stocking presents (in the hope it slows them down and we can stay in bed a bit longer) so another 8 in there. They will get 2 more each from my grandad and another 10ish probably from my mum

huuskymam · 21/12/2022 17:37

My 12 year old would have about 13 from us, my 2 adults kids would have about 5 or. But cost way more than the youngest. Then youngest would also get presents from 2 aunt, 1 uncle and 2 sets of grand parents. We stop buying for nieces and nephews when they hit 18.

smilingthroughgrittedteeth · 21/12/2022 17:37

To add though they arent all big expensive gifts they have colouring books and pens, chocolate, a book each, socks, an outfit as well as toys

itsgettingweird · 21/12/2022 17:40

Ds has 8 from me.

Just turned 18 and said he isn't doing sticking this year so that's allowed some bigger presents from me.

Mostly useful stuff

Trainers
Gym top
Swim jammers
Electric blanket
Swim club hoody
Drill bits (my dads getting him a drill!)
Tickets to see a comedian next year
Rucksack

My dad will get him 2 and my siblings will get him one so another 2.

I thought that was enough.

20-30 per child + stocking and 15 from grandparents seems massively excessive. What are they getting?

I guess clothing can be wrapped separately and made to look more and odd board games etc? Or do people get tablets and wrap screen cover and protective cover separately etc?

Desmondo2021 · 21/12/2022 17:40

About 15 under the tree from us, plus about another 10 from family. Santa sack is probably around 25-30. Have probably spent in region of £500 on her. Genuinely sorry not sorry. Would be equally as good a Christmas if I'd spent 50. Christmas is the whole of December with trips and shows and fun (mostly free fun) so the presents are a fun addition and a) we are fortunate to be able to afford it and b) she's 6 so just a truly magical age and tons of stuff she wants and needs.

Novemberhater · 21/12/2022 17:48

Mine had 15-20 small stocking presents from Santa and one present from us. They also got one from my parents.

My children do the same for my DGC. They have more grandparents and aunties and uncles than mine as they didn't have aunts etc., so get more presents, but not high value.

Champagneforeveryone · 21/12/2022 17:48

3 and a stocking. However he is 18 and two are expensive music accessories. He will also have money in his account when he goes back to uni, and we are paying for him and his girlfriend to stay overnight in a nice hotel.

He is also an only DGC so will be showered with vague and bizarre gifts from DM who flatly refuses to believe it when he says that he doesn't want anything and would secretly prefer the money

And this was supposed to be a year of elegant economy 😆

GreenLeavesRustling · 21/12/2022 17:53

Small stocking with toiletries and chocolate and a satsuma

one Santa gift

one main present from us

maybe five smaller ‘tree’ presents - books, guitar picks etc.

and three or four gifts from relatives

LaPufalina · 21/12/2022 18:03

Mine are close in age (6/4.5) and their stockings have been really fun to buy this year. They have about 15 gifts each in them, ranging from £1-£5 but only consumables (craft stuff, chocs, bubble bath) plus a couple of books.
Their main present is niche Lego which has been sourced by DH over the past few months from eBay. It's obviously not from Father Christmas so I've had to say we're changing things this year, 6yo is immediately suspicious Blush little detective

PollyEsther · 21/12/2022 18:05

We also have 4 DC and very little extended family. Ours have around 10 each too, and a stocking. DM and DMIL get them each a gift too. That’s it for them!

It’s genuinely more than enough and they’re very happy every Christmas. We still spent a fortune per kid this year though, because they all have big tech things that they needed/had to be replaced 🤦🏼‍♀️

coffeetofunction · 21/12/2022 18:10

14 from father Christmas
1 under the tree from us
Plus a small stocking

I spend about £300 each. It's more than some children get and they are lucky. I take on a second job to pay for it

MsJuniper · 21/12/2022 18:19

2 DC who each get 12-15 small/mid-size from Santa, 2-3 bigger from us and probably 10-12 from family members and friends.

I usually spend about £600-£800 in total on all gifts for family (including £150-£200 per my own DC) but haven't found such good bargains this year so I think it will be closer to £1k when I'm finally done.

Rainbowshit · 21/12/2022 18:22

Around 20. Mostly clothes and food though plus stuff for hobbies so not worried about where it all goes. This is the list of presents. I don't think it looks excessive?

Pjs
Joggers
Deodorant
Pringles
Chocolate coins
Selection box
Book
Framed picture
Led wall light
Escape room game
Wetsuit
Dinghy shoes
Bubble tea boba
Shirt DS/hoodie DD
Korean noodles
Chilli sauce
Ramen bowl

Goatinthegarden · 21/12/2022 18:22

student86 · 21/12/2022 16:34

It's nice to see we're pretty similar to most others, forgot to add they also get a Xmas Eve box with new pjs etc.

I'm not worried about how much I've spent as such as we're lucky we can afford the big ticket items but I suppose I worry we're not setting the magical memories by not having them walk into a mountain of gifts.

I certainly don’t think having mountains of presents made Christmas magical. I was a spoiled child with lots of things all year and lots of presents for birthday and Christmas. My parents had had hard childhoods and enjoyed going overboard. I found Christmas embarrassing and overwhelming. I didn’t want most of what I was given and I always found opening presents a bit disappointing because I was never blown away by what was inside. I used to pretend to my friends I had been given a lot less. I now hate being given gifts and don’t even let DH buy me anything, if I want or need something, I buy it myself.

The bits I loved most about Christmas; playing board games around the dining table; going to my dad’s work on Christmas Eve to help him deliver gifts to his employees; eating cheese and pickles on Boxing Day.

I understand the pressure though, DH and I were just having a conversation about this. We have no children and only have one niece on his side - she has no other aunties/uncles and no cousins/siblings. We just bought her a bit of an OTT present and she already has so much stuff. We were torn because she gets so much that she doesn’t really appreciate it (not her fault) but also, we don’t want to be the miserable ones who don’t get her something fun to unwrap.

SunflowerSmith · 21/12/2022 18:27

I keep a list as I buy and one dd has 34 and the other 30, that includes the stocking fillers and £1 tubes of smarties etc.
I'm not sure how much I've spent, probably £200 - £300 per child.

I pick bits up throughout the year and always shop the deals so the majority were bought with between 30%-50% off.
