How many presents do your dc have to unwrap?

I realise this might cause a riot but I'm just wondering what the average is?

My own dc don't get "presents" to unwrap from family as we are in a different country so they get money to spend in the sales (also older so appreciate this)

This means they only get from dh and I, I aim for ten presents each which costs a fortune when you have four children and they are all older so gifts more expensive. It never looks a lot when it's laid out though and even though I know big piles on social media could all be plastic tat and I've no desire to get into that kind of competition I sometimes second guess myself.

The dc also get stockings which is over and above the ten gifts but that's filled with cheap bits that they like and sweets etc.

Ds has 8 from me.

Just turned 18 and said he isn't doing sticking this year so that's allowed some bigger presents from me.

Mostly useful stuff

Trainers
Gym top
Swim jammers
Electric blanket
Swim club hoody
Drill bits (my dads getting him a drill!)
Tickets to see a comedian next year
Rucksack

My dad will get him 2 and my siblings will get him one so another 2.

I thought that was enough.

20-30 per child + stocking and 15 from grandparents seems massively excessive. What are they getting?

I guess clothing can be wrapped separately and made to look more and odd board games etc? Or do people get tablets and wrap screen cover and protective cover separately etc?

For example, dd(9) is very into art we’ve bought her 6 different packs of posca pens each with either 8 or 16 in them, these are wrapped individually. If something comes in a pack or set then it’s wrapped together.

Raoim · 21/12/2022 18:28

Just checked my list app
DD 13 has 24
DS 11 has 23
Dd 7 has 37
Dd5 has 36
Dd 4 has 12(non verbal Asd)
They each have a stocking with 10ish small things like new water bottle, blind bags ect.
They probably get another 10 or so from family and £100ish in money.

None. We are all on holiday together (kids all adult) and I had the virus that’s doing the rounds atm and I literally didn’t get out of bed for the week before we left. I’m still ill but the sunshine helps 😎 I’ve told them they haven’t got any presents but I’m not quite sure they believe me.

Depends- done on cost of items rather than number of items. Aim to spend the same on each of the 3 teens/adults. Some are small- pair of socks etc

Yes, which is why mine get only one present.

RobinRobinMouse · 21/12/2022 18:37

Other than stocking we only give dd one main and that is from FC, some years we get 2 slightly smaller ones if the main is smaller. She does get from family too though, however she is only 4 and can sometimes find lots of gifts overwhelming.

It’s priorities surely? We have gone without buying a lot of things (make do and mend), not gone away anywhere, meal planned etc in order to prioritise Christmas.

I had seen in another thread someone say that there’s a class element to the number of Christmas gifts children receive, with generally the lower wage/socioeconomic status the more gifts, because it’s easier to see the results of £5 a week over 50 weeks vs what spending that £5 would get you per week or even month.

ArtichokeAardvark · 21/12/2022 18:40

I am completely amazed - my kids have 4 each under the tree plus a stocking and I've been worrying that I've gone overboard!

CMOTDibbler · 21/12/2022 18:42

A few bits in a stocking and this year 7 actual presents I think. As there is no one giving any of us presents, there isn't exactly a pile between ds, dh and I. It does feel a bit miserable compared to the extended family/friends gifts that you see from others if I am totally honest

Jackie17177 · 21/12/2022 18:47

This year there is no wastage - so I have bought 6 gifts each - one more expensive gift (asked for) 4 more practical presents - things they need (or will need) over the next year. Two small stocking fillers i.e. chocolate, bath bombs etc....

I refuse to overthink it - I want to give a nice Christmas but things are changing over the next few years and I need to prioritise other things (Driving lessons then Uni support - happy days!)

😮 I am gobsmacked. To those that give 10+ presents how much are you spending per child?

We give each child two wrapped presents under the tree - one from us, one “from Santa” but they know it’s from us. They might get one or two from aunties / grandma but more often between the cousins we just treat to cinema or bowling trip together rather than presents.

We also do a stocking with small bits and pieces, usually wrapped to make it more fun even if just a lip balm!

I wonder how much you are spending on buying 2 presents?

We've probably spent about £150 on our 3 year old and she's probably got about 10-15 presents to open. All things she actually wants/needs though, I don't buy "crap" for the sake of buying presents; I have nowhere to store it all!

It's what you are used to but I couldn't do this. My kids get a sack each, the size of a regular sack. I've spent about £250-£300 on each child.

YoBeaches · 21/12/2022 18:54

Similar here, 3.5 yr old she's got I think 15 plus LOTS in a stocking. But I have made the error or wrapping the stocking presents as everyone says don't do it! But as we're staying at grandparents and she'll be in our room it at least will prevent her waking the whole house up.

I tracked my spend at £200, I've been ciphering away from sale items since September. But there was a very last minute purchase of a £40 baby doll that she has been talking about the last few weeks.

Be interesting to see how she handles it but I don't think I'd go more than that in general. Appreciate the spend may increase as she gets older.

No-one here suffering from the cost of living crisis then?

I started my Christmas shopping in August. Planned and saved. I started overpaying on my gas and electric in May too, just to boost the debit for winter. So yes, it's hit us, but I have tried my hardest not to let it impact my kids Christmas.

immergeradeaus · 21/12/2022 18:58

One thing each under the tree. And a stocking each which is:

Sweets, nail varnish, books for dc3
Sweets, book, puzzles for dc2
Sweets, books, thermals for dc1

I don't feel at all stingy: the tree presents are sometimes expensive (eg if a child needs a new laptop or phone, and I make sure that they are good quality.)

Christmas was much cheaper when my DC were small. DS1 is getting ear buds. They were £71, and that was half price! When he was a toddler he could have had 2-3 big toys for that price. Mind you things were cheaper 18 years ago!

nancydroo · 21/12/2022 18:59

Ours get ten each and a pre-filled stocking

Not as much as others. Sorry about that.

We donate to food banks and present drives AND volunteer at them. We do what we can to share our fortune.

MojoJojo71 · 21/12/2022 19:03

30 in total but 3 are gifts I’ve bought with money sent by my parents for them to give her and 3 with money from aunts who live overseas. So 24 altogether from me. This includes 6 books, a jacket and some winter boots bought from Vinted and several lots of sweets. She didn’t want a ‘big’ present so I’ve spent no more than £50 on a single present and about £250 in total.

Adelais · 21/12/2022 19:03

My two get around 12 presents each and then 3/4 little things and chocolate in their stocking.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 21/12/2022 19:04

My eldest (5yrs old) has 8 from us
my youngest (2yrs Old) has 4
then they each get a couple from my sister, and about 5 friends of mine have given them presents (no grandparents on my side and my husbands family are abroad and don’t bother).
stockings prob lots more- didn’t bother to count.
id say they are lucky

Hugasauras · 21/12/2022 19:05

I'd estimate 25+ but that does include some family gifts too (and I'm not including stocking gifts). Christmases are a big thing for me and I enjoy going overboard Grin We've probably spent about £300 on DD1 and about £50 on DD2 as she's only 6mo, which is what I had roughly planned for. We don't really do gifts to the adults in my family so it's all about the kids.
