My optician said I have dry eyes. I’m not sure she called it a disease though. My eyes water a lot and sometimes itch. My vision sometimes goes blurry at the end of the day. I find 10 minutes with a warm eye mask at the end of the day really helps. My eyes water much less now.

Wellitjustgetsworse · 21/12/2022 11:26

Hey I do. Only in my 20s and I've tried it all. I have checkups every few months it's a nightmare but one thing that has helped me recently is a course of steroid eye drops from the eye doctor not sort of thing you can buy off the shelf. I still have dry eyes but it has helped so much and this time of year you'll find the heating on really aggravates it.

I have an inflammatory eye condition, currently using Ciclosporin drops at night, followed 20 minutes later by Xyalin Night ointment . It’s very thick and you use it last thing as it makes your eyesight ‘fuzzy’, then 0.2% Sodium Hyaluronate (Hydramed) eye drops during the day. You can buy the ointment and day drops OTC but the Cyclosporine is prescription only.

I used to have awful dry eyes until I worked out the connection between diet & how my eyes felt. Massively upping the quantity & variety of veg eaten plus ditching sugar & refined carbs and my eyes felt brilliant. It's a bummer because I do like a piece of cake or three

mincepiepie · 21/12/2022 14:37

I had dry eyes due to context lenses and then laser surgery

I found drops helped at night really thick ones to stop them drying out over night and then during day less thick knes.

Celluvisc was the best 1% are the thick ones for night

I quite like the spray in closed eyes too.

I did try a range. And jr js trial and error.

What also worked was a heated eye bag (like a wheat thing for eyes stimulates oil) also gently massaging under they eyes and blinking.

Drinking more water.

Do you have general dry eyes or a condition called Sjorgdens? Both cause dry eyes but Sjorgdens is much more severe. Different treatments depending....

sharalandar · 21/12/2022 14:41

My mum has Sjögren's if that's what you mean? She has Ciclosporin from her doctor and also uses 'artificial tears' from over the counter.

dontgobaconmyheart · 21/12/2022 15:59

I have Sjogrens, which runs in our family. It causes a lot of dryness in various places including the eyes.

I find artificial tear eye drops helpful, heated eye masks and a warm flannel over the eyes in the bath every evening.

Redrobinbobbing · 21/12/2022 16:29

do you guys find the drops/ointment makes you spotty
?

im starting to I wonder about Sjogrens now

OP posts:
StillSmallVoice · 21/12/2022 17:12

I have Sjogrens. It's an autoimmune disease. Just keep on using the drops whoever you feel a bit uncomfortable. You get used to it and you will find that it won't really have a huge impact on your life.

The worst thing was constant panda eyes because of the drops smudging eye makeup. An eye primer (MAC do a good one) and a tubing mascara sorted that. I have also learned to apply the drops without getting it everywhere.

The main one I use is Theoloz Duo. I bought it over the counter once. It cheaper to get it on prescription.

notprincehamlet · 21/12/2022 17:16

Had dry eyes after LASIK - sea buckthorn oil capsules seem to help

Lulu1919 · 21/12/2022 17:18

My husband has two types of eye drops...
One he can use two or three times a day and another just at night
HYLO range....you can buy them but not cheap ..he gets in script for GP

bumblefeline · 21/12/2022 17:21

A heated eye mask that you can pop in a microwave and Hycosan Extra eye drops. That is what we give to most of our patients with dry eyes.

dontgobaconmyheart · 21/12/2022 17:27

What do you mean by spotty, OP?

JamieNorthlife · 21/12/2022 17:28

Hi had dry eyes and sometimes was very blurred. Had a couple of eye hospital appointments (RFH and Finchley memorial) but they had no clue what the problem was.

My GP referred me to Moorfields eye hospital and they diagnosed me with blepharitis. I did not have all the symptoms of the condition just the blocked tear ducts. I was treated with eye antibiotics 4 x day for 2 weeks and eye drops Hylo-forte (the eye drops were expensive).
You can find more info on this on the Moorfields Eye Hospital site on the links.

Afterfire · 21/12/2022 17:29

I have sjorgens - it often overlaps with lupus and other conditions. I have lots of autoimmune issues. I get eye drops prescribed - PF Drops 4%. They work wonders.

Afterfire · 21/12/2022 17:30

There is a Sjorgens support group uk on Facebook that is very good. I can’t link to it but you’ll find it if you search for it.

WobblyLondoner · 21/12/2022 17:35

I had a long chat with an optician about this today. I've had terrible dry eyes for the last few months and have been using hycosan drops twice daily. They are still sore and often very pink. She confirmed they are very dry and said my corneas show some damage as a result.

She recommended I use drops more often in the day, use an ointment at night having massaged my eyelids beforehand. And taking omega oil. I'm willing to give anything a go really - so fed up with this.

Purpleavocado · 21/12/2022 17:38

How old are you? I started getting dry eyes in perimenopause and HRT fixed it.

dontgobaconmyheart · 21/12/2022 17:27

What do you mean by spotty, OP?

OP posts:
Pelo22 · 21/12/2022 18:34

Sea buckthorn oil capsules
Hycosan
Heated eye masks (I use the kao steam ones)

Frankensteinscat · 21/12/2022 18:40

Dry eyes can be connected to Rosacea a skin condition that can present as spots. I developed dry eyes first and then started getting spots on my forehead. I saw multiple doctors who didn't see the connection. It was only when I went to a dermatologist he confirmed the dry eye was ocular rosacea. I got the dry eye sorted over time, it took a couple of years to get my eyes back to how they were. I saw an ophthalmologist privately.

Redrobinbobbing · 21/12/2022 18:57

Pretty sure i don’t have rosacea I think I have sebaceous hyperplasia
which don’t go
