Carmize artificial tears are good, and eyelid wipes. I find mine is allergy related - so I'm usually on some sort of antihistamine, benadryl or piriton work best. I don't find opticrom allergy eye drops are much good for me. I try to not eat/drink the things that aggravate my allergies - dairy and sulphites in alcohol. Not too much screen time too!

I use a la roche posay dermallergo eye contour cream around my eye area as its awful if you have not only dry eyes but the skin around your eyes is dry too - I feel like a mole sometimes!

PoseyFlump · 21/12/2022 19:04

I get a very dry throat and eyes. Suspect sjorgens but I've heard it's hard to diagnose so haven't asked my gp.

I get Hylo-Forte drops from Amazon (cheaper in the triple pack)

My optician said that my dry eyes were due to blocked oil ducts around the rim of the eye. (In my case it is exacerbated by my alopecia which had made all my eyelashes fall out, reducing the protection my eyes have against anything in the environment.)
The optician recommended warm eyemasks followed by a structured self-massage aimed at squeezing out any gummed-up oils that had been softened by the mask. She also recommended following this with the use of a special eye cleansing product to remove any dislodged gunk.

I followed her advice and it did lead to a lot of improvement. Apparently, when the oil ducts are working properly, a layer of oil coats the water on your eye and prevents the water from dropping down to the lower rim of the eye and falling out as tears (this explains why 'dry' eyes are also watery eyes). By nurturing the oils you can retain the layer of water that the eyes need.

I've also got some expensive prescription sunglasses to protect my eyes from wind and sun (sunlight definitely makes my eyes worse.)

Redrobinbobbing · 21/12/2022 19:24

Random that’s what I’ve been advised to do
the heat masks massage and drops etc
how long did you do that for ? did you do it twice a day for a certain amount of time

I didn't get on with the eye drops. I just blast mine with Optrex spray. Wonderful stuff! :-)

Hey I do. Only in my 20s and I've tried it all. I have checkups every few months it's a nightmare but one thing that has helped me recently is a course of steroid eye drops from the eye doctor not sort of thing you can buy off the shelf. I still have dry eyes but it has helped so much and this time of year you'll find the heating on really aggravates it.

Please be careful with these eye drops. I felt they were so helpful and got repeat prescriptions a lot until the hospital told me that they can make you go blind.

Florence4170 · 21/12/2022 19:38

I find eye scrub is good plus Opticrom because my eyes get very itchy. Potash eye mask really helps too. It's a very miserable condition but it can be managed.

Random789 · 21/12/2022 19:47

@Redrobinbobbing I did it once a day for about a week, and it started to help within a couple of days. I'm afraid that I don't do it regularly now, but it is reassuring to know that it is available when things get worse. I really do feel that my problems are worse in summer, and it was right at the end of the summer that I received the advice. I imagine that when the days start to get warm and harshly bright again I might have to go back to a daily routine.
I also get mild hayfever, andI'm looking forward to chilling the mask instead of warming it as I think that will be very soothing during the hayfever season

I have sjogrens. I use carbomer eye gel and heavily fluoridated tooth paste. The dry mouth side of it can really affect teeth and decay can get out of control very quickly. So plenty of mouth wash, using a water pic and chewing sugar free gum all day helps to keep my mouth moist.

Redrobinbobbing · 21/12/2022 20:54

Would you say sjogrens can be bought on or come about due to stress ? I’ve been under so much stress last 6 months

@RRedrobinbobbing if you're under an eye consultant ask about allogenic or autologous serum eye drops. They change lives! X

I used to have awful dry eyes until I worked out the connection between diet & how my eyes felt. Massively upping the quantity & variety of veg eaten plus ditching sugar & refined carbs and my eyes felt brilliant. It's a bummer because I do like a piece of cake or three

That's interesting. I get it a lot and use Hycosan drops. I was blaming the central heating but I also seem to eat more sugary, stodgy stuff in cold weather, so it could be that.

lifeinthehills · 22/12/2022 06:51

I did and got IPL treatment. It seems to have fixed it.

Dry eyes can be connected to Rosacea a skin condition that can present as spots. I developed dry eyes first and then started getting spots on my forehead. I saw multiple doctors who didn't see the connection. It was only when I went to a dermatologist he confirmed the dry eye was ocular rosacea. I got the dry eye sorted over time, it took a couple of years to get my eyes back to how they were. I saw an ophthalmologist privately.

Hello! I developeddry eyes and then spots on my forehead and it’s ocular rosacea+. I’m using soolantra and sea uk thorn oil/ fish oil and cut it caffeine and refined sugar and white carbs. I would love to hear any tips you might have, I’m very heartened to hear you got your eyes sorted.

Op, one other thing is to drink plenty of water, stay hydrated, maybe use an electrolyte drink to see if that makes you feel any better

I have dry eyes and was doing the usual things + warm flannel and eyedrops. Then optician said my eyes were inflamed and suggested cold flannel and eyedrops. I have discovered by accident that ibprofen helps. I had suspected sjorgens but blood test inconclusive.

I am currently dealing with nasty flu and taking lots of ibprofen and eyes are great.

Where did you get your ipl treatment ? Was it expensive ?

I get Hylo-forte on prescription from doctor. Would highly recommend as without it I can't control my dry eye condition. Available from Amazon too.

It was done by my optometrist. It was moderately priced.

Ibuprofen is an anti inflammatory. For dry eyes, bringing down inflammation levels in the body helps. I started doing intermittent fasting and taking Quercetin and vitamin C. Sea buckthorn capsules also.

Pineconederby · 22/12/2022 12:23

Is it something local that causes it, eg heating? My eyes are dreadful in the winter but if I go on holiday to somewhere where artificial heating isn’t needed, they’re absolutely fine.
