It can be a small business owner of a ltd company. Do you have any shopkeepers locally who you've known for 2+ years?

TerraNostra · 21/12/2022 08:31

Thank you for your voice of reason @NatMoz!

You don’t need to go into detailed reasons about why a housewife (or anyone else) might be accepted. If they check, that’s when you set out why you think they’re acceptable.

I’ve just done it with a friend who put their occupation as ‘student’.

Haha I don't comment on threads much (more of a lurker) but I don't know what that person was wittering on about! Clear as mud to the external observer!

Sometimes people find it hard to accept that what is 'obvious' to them clearly isn't to most, especially if essential details have been omitted and the rest of us don't know the housewife in question and all the charitable work/life saving skills/food bank hub running she's involved with!!!

Even then I'm surprised the passport office accepted the signatory as I've no idea how it would be proven but then again what do i know! When i sorted a first passport for my baby i used a retired headteacher. I've done a couple for people myself as I'm a civil servant.

Anyway it doesn't matter now, OP is sorted as they popped to their neighbours which was good advice to whoever suggested it further up the thread.

My GP does it for a fee.

I might not have said it but when i read your message i definitely was under the impression you were saying housewife was accepted on that basis alone .

However you try and rationalise it, on a thread where someone is trying to find a counter signatory and needs help, saying this will potentially make someone in desperate need, go to a housewife to sign their documents.

If you'd said 'a housewife but she was considered a pillar of the community detailed reason here and THIS is what got the counter signatory excepted' then this conversation wouldn't be happening

Despite what you think, there was no comment about why she considered herself a pillar of the community, and no further enquiries were made. So there is no further information I could have offered.

If I could have suggested anything more helpful I would have done, but there was nothing to say. In this case no-one will ever know whether

a) housewife was considered acceptable
b) person processing the application just happened to recognise friend's name as a person of standing
c) for some reason (post backlog? needed to meet targets? whatever) the person processing the application was either under instructions or unilaterally decided that this one would be OK.
d) another reason I can't think of...

You may believe 'housewife' alone would never be accepted, and I agree it's not a strategy I'd recommend. But it did work once so it may work again.

Not any more. See above.

ha ha unless your friend was the Queen I think that is vanishingly unlikely!

If you had really wanted to be helpful you would have said all that you have just said above, not posted a one line response saying that someone once put “housewife” and all was fine. But whatever. Happy Christmas.

Obviously. But you’d have to be ready for questions if the person does not have one of the listed occupations. And many of those are ones that are can be independently verified, by the way- I do them for friends because I am a solicitor. I have to put my registration number so they can look me up on the roll. One time it was not included and they called to ask me for it.

Has your application been approved?

MolesOnPoles · 21/12/2022 14:17

@TerraNostra yes, a few months ago. No questions asked.

newtb · 21/12/2022 14:20

GPs were taken off the list as they were charging £60 for signing. I'm on the list BUT as I no longer live in the UK can't. it's madness.

Out of interest, what made you think that “student” would be acceptable? It’s not on the list. Did the person have some other objective status of good standing in their community?

You can still sign for other people who also live outside the UK. I did it for a fellow a British friend when we both lived in Hong King.

TerraNostra · 21/12/2022 15:24

Kong.
