Remedies for disgustingly blocked nose please!

IvyDora · 19/12/2022 12:40

As the title says.... horrendous blocked nose/ sinuses - Sudafed tablets pretty useless .. don't want to use nasal spray really as issues in the past where nose ends up addicted to this and makes it worse in the end!
Anyone have any helpful remedies please? Suffering 🤒

Head over a steaming bowl of water, or sniffing Vicks Vaporub!

Laiste · 19/12/2022 13:45

Olbas oil.

www.boots.com/olbas-oil-30ml-10272974

Sprinkle a few drops on a cloth (pillow case?) and keep it under your nose. Keep 'breathing' and it'll work eventually. (not for getting on your skin). You can put a few drops in hot water and inhale it with a cloth over your head.

Vicks vapour rub. Rub some on your chest and some on your back.

Forget vapour rub. You can buy very cheaply from any pharmacist a small pot of menthol crystals.

The pot is very small. The crystals are very powerful! You only need 3 or 4 tiny crystals foe a bloody good inhalation. Add to boiling water and breathe deeply.

Plenty of steamy showers- get them hot and as much steam as you can. Blow your nose in the shower. Yes it's disgusting, but it's effective - just clean and disinfect the shower afterwards.

A decongestant nasal spray will help. You can also buy saline sprays or neti pots. If using a neti pot, only use cooled boiled water for safety reasons. Don't use water that isn't sterile.

Keep taking decongestant tablets. But the menthol and steam - that's what you really need.

Steam inhaler from Boots or similar. Much better than the bowl of hot water and towel but has the same effect. And can be reused for years. Costs less than £10.

Please don't do the steaming water trick. I tried it at the end of October and am still scarred from the burns on my thighs from where it tipped over into my lap. Dealing with multiple hospital trips for dressings changes AND a shitty blocked nose is really really horrid.

The only other thing I tried was the nasal spray and that set weird things off elsewhere. Much sympathy to you!

ChessieFL · 19/12/2022 13:57

I’m also suffering and the only thing that’s working for me at the moment is Sudafed nasal spray. I’ve tried all the steam solutions, I stink of olbas oil and vaporub and they’re just not touching it.

declutteringmymind · 19/12/2022 13:59

Neti pot

Saucery · 19/12/2022 14:00

Antihistamine.

ScarlettOHaraHamiltonKennedyButler · 19/12/2022 14:46

I agree the nasal spray can lead to some issues down the line but it is the only thing that works for me when my sinuses are blocked.

ChigedyJigHeeHawHeeHawItsDominicTheDonkey · 19/12/2022 15:05

My nose was blocked to the point every time I swallowed I felt like I was going to suffocate. I tried Vicks vapour, steaming over a washing up bowl of albas oil and hot water and a towel over my head, albas oil shoved over my pillow. Hot steamy showers with the windows and doors shut to make it as steamy as possible. All that succeeded in was clearing the gunk off my chest. In the end the only thing that worked for me was the Sudafed decongestant nasal spray. It was pretty much instant relief

Thanks all! Off to boots I go, feeling very sorry for myself 🤣

Have you tried a regular Neti pot or Sinus
rinse? It’s not medicated, just a kind of saline solution you put up one nostril and breath out the other- clearing your sinuses as it goes.

Toomanysleepycats · 19/12/2022 16:05

Nose and face massage nearly always works. It’s my go to for all family members.

I rub and massage skin above all the places where the sinuses are. Middle of eyebrows, sides of nose, under the eyes etc.

Im not sure how it works because all theses spaces are behind bones, but it really does. Might take up to 10 mins, but I find it really does and the worse it is the more relief there is. There is a bit of gross sniffing involved to clear it.

FixItUpChappie · 19/12/2022 16:14

I don’t know if they sell it in the UK but Dristan mentholated nasal spray is the best product possibly ever - the medical ingredients are phenylephrine HCl 0.5% and pheniramine maleate 0.2%.

Spanielsarepainless · 19/12/2022 16:17

I have a prescription nasal spray, Mometasone I think it's called. Bloody brilliant.

biddyboo · 19/12/2022 16:39

I have bought the neti pot saline rinse, and I'm sitting here eagerly waiting for it to arrive so I can give it a go as Im really struggling too. My issue is that whenever I get a cold (and I've had a few recently!) I get a really bad mucusy cough afterwards. I realised recently that I have postnasal drip, probably due to allergies, so I think that is what causes/contributes to it. Anyway, I've heard of saline rinses being recommended on here, so I'm going to try it in the hope that it will help me to not spend another night awake and coughing. Might work for you op?

SophieJo · 19/12/2022 16:41

I used Oleabas oil, few drops on a hanky helped me.

SlipperyLizard · 19/12/2022 16:44

Sinus rinse, I use a neilmed bottle but make my own solution (1 tsp salt, 1 tsp bicarb in a pint of boiled water (that you let cool down to body temperature before squirting it up your nose!)).

Then once you’ve rinsed use beconase nasal spray - it is meant for hayfever but is a steroid spray & helps clear my sinus infections alongside the rinse.

"Vicks vapour rub. Rub some on your chest and some on your back."

I've never tried this but I've heard people saying rubbing Vicks on the soles of their feet works.

Rub either side of your nostrils in circular motion to drain sinuses.

MenaiMna · 19/12/2022 16:46

After a shower gently massage eyelids close to the bridge of your nose. Then put your index finger on earlobe (this is for placement) then use the strength of your thumbs to massage across under cheekbones on outer sinuses. Should help to start some draining.

dementedma · 19/12/2022 16:46

Agree with all on steaming and if you have any to hand, use rosemary or sage as a replacement for Vicks

Jellycats4life · 19/12/2022 16:52

Otrivine spray or similar is the only thing that really works.

I’ve heard about people becoming addicted, but HOW? I use it if I have a horribly blocked nose, but when things get back to normal, I stop. I never find myself climbing the walls for my next fix 😄
