How to pronounce Gabriel?

I meeting someone for work today - is it Gay-briel or Gab-riel?

I will ask him if necessary but thought I'd ask the Mighty Mumsnet first.

Perhaps it depends where he's from and I don't know the answer to that (not UK).

British- Gay-brew-Elle
European - Gah-bree-el or Guh-bree-elle

So no further forward!

I'd say from his accent/ surname he is from Austria / Germany or surrounding areas.

I'd go for Gab. rather than Gay-b

French say Ga-briel. As do Belgians (both French and Flemish).

I would definitely ask him. Use it as a conversation starter!

My high school was called St Gabriels, we said Gay- briels,, but it was commonly known as Gabs, just to confuse matters .

If he is german/dutch/austrain it would be Ga bri el
