There's something about a bowl of porridge...

For breakfast on a cold day. So comforting but nourishing too, feels like you're setting yourself for the day. I've just had mine with cinnamon and a blob of almond butter, plus a little agave syrup for sweetness. Feel so much better after a freezing school run and dog walk!

I promise I don't work for the porridge marketing company! Wink

I use to love it then I broke a filling and it's all I've been able to eat 😭

DS(7) loves porridge and has it most days made with a heaped tablespoon of ground almonds and milk. Then a drop of Agave and milk to serve.

Has anyone tried it cold as overnight oats? I’ve been looking to try a bit of variety for him.

I'm not a fan of overnight oats. Bircher muesli though is delicious.

bottersnikes · 14/12/2022 22:17

@Chaiandchocolate I make my porridge as overnight oats - jumbo oats, walnut pieces, pumpkin seeds, cacao nibs, almond butter and maple syrup, with full-fat milk. Delicious both cold and warm!

I like it but for some reason it has a laxative effect on me. I thought it was supposed to be good for you. Saves me having colonic irrigation I suppose.

glamourousindierockandroll · 14/12/2022 22:21

For some reason, I feel like a Proper Mum when I make my children porridge for breakfast. I absolutely love it.

Thefriendlyone · 14/12/2022 22:22

I want to like it, but just can’t, the only way for me to get on with it is to add so much to it to flavour it, I can’t actually taste the porridge, so for me it’s a no..

SingingSands · 14/12/2022 22:25

I really want to like porridge, but my body rejects it. In one end and very quickly out the other!

FairlyIncognito · 14/12/2022 22:31

I eat porridge every couple of weeks but never as enthusiastically as most of you! I’m proper impressed by the enjoyment here.
when I do make it I make it with whole milk for the DC too and maybe that’s my issue as I think for me I prefer it with water or half and half . I add cinnamon and apple sometimes . I’m going to try ground seeds in it too for our baby after reading this thread.

I used to love porridge but have gone right off it. It just seems to multiply in my bowl. The more I eat, the more there seems to be. Haven't made it in ages

Boobahs · 14/12/2022 23:16

I love a big bowl of porridge with banana, raisins and golden syrup in it. Not had it for ages though.

Also porridge done on the hob in a pan tastes infinitely better than microwaved porridge.

I love porridge, it's very comfy. DD likes it with a banana through it and cooked with soya or other vegan milk; I'm a true Scot so cook it with water and salt, and add a bit of milk to the bowl to serve.
I don't see any other salty porridge fans here!

I put a pinch of salt in mine when cooking it, I saw a TV chef say that it brings out the flavour and it's definitely true!

RampantIvy · 14/12/2022 23:20

I find I get hungry faster than if I eat a breakfast with protein.

Same here. They lied when they said that porridge keeps you full for lomger.

TBH I'm not that fond of porridge, but I eat it becasue I think I should. I prefer a slice of toast (which keeps me fuller for longer).

It just seems to multiply in my bowl. The more I eat, the more there seems to be

I know what you mean. Shades of The Magic Porridge Pot.

TheSnugglyDuckling · 15/12/2022 00:26

Interesting those people saying it makes them hungry. I’m a T1 diabetic and when I eat porridge, even if I try and give insulin for it, my blood sugar spikes to 16 or 17 (normal blood sugar if you’re not diabetic is 4-7 regardless of what you eat) and then it absolutely crashes to about 3 - so it’s probably having a similar (but less dramatic effect) in non diabetics and it’s that crash that is causing the hunger. (Hunger is a symptom of low blood sugar).

WhistlingInWhistler · 15/12/2022 00:38

I'm another one who finds porridge makes me hungry. It really shouldn't, but I'm starving by 11 if I've had it for breakfast.

EcafTnuc · 15/12/2022 01:10

I’m not a huge porridge fan but warm weetabix gives me the same comforting hug feeling. That might be the spoonful(s) of sugar on top but shhhhh

Mumtobabyhavoc · 15/12/2022 02:20

with sliced pear, cinnamon, a bit of brown sugar and a bit of warm milk. 😛
