There's something about a bowl of porridge...

For breakfast on a cold day. So comforting but nourishing too, feels like you're setting yourself for the day. I've just had mine with cinnamon and a blob of almond butter, plus a little agave syrup for sweetness. Feel so much better after a freezing school run and dog walk!

I promise I don't work for the porridge marketing company! Wink

it's gross, like eating a bowl of warm sick.

FlyingNorth · 14/12/2022 11:48

@CoQ10 I was about to suggest almost the same - my work canteen does carrot cake porridge, which is this plus spices of some kind. Sometimes I just put chai tea mix plus a bit of honey in plain porridge. Surprised it spikes blood sugar for some people - isn't it supposed to be a slow-release carb? Are people putting sugar/honey in it?

You've eaten a bowl of warm sick? 😲

I agree! Love porridge and it’s a winter daily staple for me. I use Flahavans oats (bit pricier but so rich and creamy and lovely and a bag lasts ages)

I like to make a batch of stewed apples at the weekend made with cinnamon and stir that through. I also sometimes like a blob of jam, or banana and a spoonful of peanut butter. Sometimes I simply have it with a teaspoon of sugar sprinkled on.

I love porridge, it's very comfy. DD likes it with a banana through it and cooked with soya or other vegan milk; I'm a true Scot so cook it with water and salt, and add a bit of milk to the bowl to serve.
I don't see any other salty porridge fans here!

I'm a salty porridge fan too. Being born in Brittany I grew up having salted butter in almost every dish I ate. I didn't even know the existence of unsalted butter until I first went abroad aged 11 or 12. We were all really surprised (and shocked) by the taste of it or rather its lack of taste. No porridge for me without salted breton butter.

MadameSzyszkoBohusz · 14/12/2022 12:28

I'm a Flahavan's fan too, as is DD. She ate it all the way through last summer's heat wave! 😆

Every year I try to like porridge, because I love the idea of porridge, but every year my gullet rejects the porridge on the grounds of texture.

JengaCupboard · 14/12/2022 12:35

You guys are all healthier than me... harking back to my childhood I LOVE the very occasional bowl of porridge, and it's definitely a treat as I make it with blue milk, and then slather the top in a couple of tablespoons of crunchy brown sugar and enough golden syrup to pond on the surface... I've tried it more healthily but its just NOT THE SAME!! :)

TheKitchenWitch · 14/12/2022 12:40

I don't understand the love for it at all. It's revolting, the texture is indeed like (what I would imagine) warm sick. Bleurgh.

EnglishGirlApproximately · 14/12/2022 12:41

@JengaCupboard that's how DP has his porridge. Needless to say DS prefers it when he makes it!
My current favourite is to add a bit of Almond extract and ground Almonds when cooking, some chopped pear or apple and a blob of jam - Bakewell tart porridge. We love it with biscoff and banana, or sultanas and cinnamon 😋

cataline · 14/12/2022 12:42

I wish i liked porridge but it's one of my most hated things. It actually makes me retch!

Dissuadepersuade · 14/12/2022 12:46

Love it!

Have mine after the gym in the morning with almond milk and protein powder, peanut butter, mix of nuts and seeds and half a banana...I've not got sick of it so far and I usually get sick of having the same thing mind you I do use different flavours of protein powder to mix it a up a bit sometimes

TeaAddict235 · 14/12/2022 13:05

I love it too. I make it with full fat milk and then before eating I add a large dollop of Greek yoghurt. I have low blood pressure and low cholesterol.

Cuppasoupmonster · 14/12/2022 13:07

Agreed. Blueberries and a sprinkle of cinnamon and sugar for me.

greenhousegal · 14/12/2022 13:12

MangoBiscuit · 14/12/2022 10:04

I also need protein or I end up ravenous again by 10:30, so I add in a bit of protein powder.

And me too! I add a scoop of vanilla protein powder and ground flaxseed to the dry mix. Add water, 3 minutes in the MW and voila. If needed, a drop of soya milk to thin it out. I never put sugar or anything like honey or anything else like fruit, nuts etc. on it. The protein powder I use adds a hint of flavour and it's more than enough for me!

So simple and keeps me going for hours. I LOVE PORRIDGE..

MangoBiscuit · 14/12/2022 14:41

@greenhousegal which protein do you use? If I add mine before microwaving it goes nasty and lumpy, so I tend to microwave oats and milk/water (and funnilly enough, milled linseed!), then add the powder and stir well.

SamphirethePogoingStickerist · 14/12/2022 14:48

Cheapest big bag of Scottish oats, chopped apple and cinammon.

Microwaved. The absolutely least hassle version possible.

Delicious and very filling

MagpiePi · 14/12/2022 14:48

Love it, love it, love it!
I have porridge everyday for breakfast and often as a snack, but made with water, as I don’t like it with milk. I mix in ground ginger and cinnamon (before the water or it just floats in the top) and sometimes a spoonful of cocoa powder for chocolate porridge, or mix in some sunflower seeds.
2 minutes in the microwave and it’s ready to go.
Protein powder always goes lumpy and tastes revolting to me.

MissyB1 · 14/12/2022 15:05

I eat it for lunch as I do 16/8 fasting and don’t eat until midday. I have a bowl of mornflake oats with added chia, sesame, sunflower, and linseeds. Really filling.

Adelaide66 · 14/12/2022 15:12

Love you fellow porridge fans. Such a cheap start to the day, blue berries and pumpkin seeds are my additions.

Isthatascratchonmygrandmother · 14/12/2022 15:20

Oh yes. This is my kind of thread baby. It just feels like such self-care getting a bowl of porridge down you. I like maple syrup with mine, sometime jam, sometimes cinnamon. Sometimes salt even! Love a good porridge.

Deadringer · 14/12/2022 15:23

I used to love porridge, I ate it every morning for years. Now i can't stand the stuff, no idea why but I don't even like seeing someone else eat it.

Crikeyalmighty · 14/12/2022 15:25

I could live on it!!

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 14/12/2022 15:27

Love it with salted butter or olive oil, generally savoury though.

Anjo2011 · 14/12/2022 15:28

Someone suggested I make it with oat milk as it’s creamier. I would usually use milk. I tried and can confirm it was fab, with a teaspoon of gingerbread honey.
