There's something about a bowl of porridge...

For breakfast on a cold day. So comforting but nourishing too, feels like you're setting yourself for the day. I've just had mine with cinnamon and a blob of almond butter, plus a little agave syrup for sweetness. Feel so much better after a freezing school run and dog walk!

I promise I don't work for the porridge marketing company! Wink

I love it. Blueberries and a banana

changer121 · 14/12/2022 15:30

We love it with nuts, cinnamon, banana and brown sugar.
Sometimes a grated apple in it and gorgeous with a drizzle of double cream too !

kavalkada · 14/12/2022 15:41

I hated porridge till I found out Jamie Oliver's recepie, and now I love it. Rolles oats with water, add honey, banana, cinnamon and bit of milk. I'll make that for dinner.

@greenhousegal which protein do you use? If I add mine before microwaving it goes nasty and lumpy, so I tend to microwave oats and milk/water (and funnilly enough, milled linseed!), then add the powder and stir well.

I use Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard Whey from H+B. 24g protein strength. Flavour Vanilla ice cream. Gorgeous. I add it to my smoothies also.

I just mix it with the dry oats and flaxseed with a fork, then add water and stir it up, then MW. Never have lumps in it.

With demarara sugar and cream. Or golden syrup.

MandarinCat · 14/12/2022 19:52

I love porridge

Emmamoo89 · 14/12/2022 20:19

Has to be milky and lumpy 😋 with sugar added.

Coxspurplepippin · 14/12/2022 20:21

Love it. Eating it with brown sugar and cream does reduce the healthful quality somewhat though.

DS(7) loves porridge and has it most days made with a heaped tablespoon of ground almonds and milk. Then a drop of Agave and milk to serve.

Has anyone tried it cold as overnight oats? I’ve been looking to try a bit of variety for him.

KaleToChristmas · 14/12/2022 20:24

Yes! Never feel as virtuous as when I have had porridge for breakfast. Love the sound of the almond butter OP.

daisychain01 · 14/12/2022 20:30

I take a pot of porridge oats mixed with unsweetened muesli and cook it at work in the microwave, mixing it with boiling water, then add a dash of milk and if I'm at home, a level teaspoon of soft brown sugar.

Ive been eating it most days for breakfast and whenever I have my bloods done in the past 3 years it shows my cholesterol reading is down to below 5 which is good news.

I think it tastes better when someone else makes it for me

My Dad would make me a bowl of porridge every morning, he used Carnation milk and it was divine. I'd give anything to go back to those mornings.

Changes17 · 14/12/2022 20:34

I have porridge for breakfast almost every day, even when it's hot in the summer (although not on holiday). It's just a habit now... Usually with fruit and a little bit of honey. I'm then not hungry till lunchtime.

HRTQueen · 14/12/2022 20:36

when milk is poured on and it sits on top it make me want to be sick 🤮

midsomermurderess · 14/12/2022 10:06

I like to cut a banana through it, maybe put some grapes in too. Excellent breakfast.

Yum! Just what I do with mine

EdHelpPls · 14/12/2022 20:48

Mmmm, cut up apple and pear then sprinkle cinnamon over it. No sugar needed. Started adding some nuts and seeds as I found I was hungry about 3 hours after porridge and it's helped me hold off another hour or so though I'm very hungry by 12! Just got some chia to see if that helps any.
Quinoa porridge is also nice.

Tallulasdancingshoes · 14/12/2022 20:49

Yes, I’ve been giving the kids ready brek. They like it with honey and saltanas - central heating for kids!

FestiveCrunch · 14/12/2022 21:27

I don't have it very often, but when I do it's treat food - so a bar of CDM in the bowl first, porridge over the top Grin

DrMadelineMaxwell · 14/12/2022 21:35

I had porridge for lunch at work today. Lazily I took the oats mixed with milk in for the morning, then nuked it for a couple of minutes in the microwave until it was cooked. I like it really thick with lots of texture. And I only put demerara sugar on it, so it's nice and sweet and crunchy.

iliketartan · 14/12/2022 21:39

Oats so Simple velvet chocolate made with full fat milk and left to stand for a few minutes after microwaving makes for a nice thick texture with a lovely chocolate skin on top 😋

catandcoffee · 14/12/2022 21:40

@ParanoidGynodroid reading your words about water, salt and a slosh of milk in your porridge......gosh childhood memories flooded back....Scottish Dad 😍

dementedma · 14/12/2022 22:02

Another who wants to puke just at the smell of it. A bowl of milky slop or sludge. Devil's vomit!

GuyFawkesDay · 14/12/2022 22:07

We've had "Christmas porridge" this week with cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger and brown sugar.

Yummy!!

I love feeding the kids porridge. Something so satisfying about giving them a hot nutritious breakfast. White's Speedicook is my favourite.
