Does anyone use 'nextdoor'? Is it me or is it really vicious?!

I think I am going to come off it! I haven't found it particularly useful either.

Nor am I sensitive to what people say to me online but honestly!

I agreed with someone about something and they started a full-scale rant with me, arguing! And all I'd done was say yes, I agree (and basically paraphrased what they'd said).

A young woman had put an advertisement up for a lodger in her house and asked for a female, and preferably a Muslim woman.

I responded saying to be careful putting her personal mobile number up on such an advert (in a very polite way!), maybe I was a busybody? I've just had some 'funny' phone calls in the recent past and thought she may not have thought of this.

She's taken the advert down now, but before she did I had a notification to state that someone else had commented stating she can put her number up without needing to listen to racist ignorant comments 'from the likes of me'! How on earth was I racist?

I've also put up an advertisement for some free clothes, nothing particularly special but all only worn once or not at all, perfectly good clothes and got a load of random people telling me how awful they were. They were just basics, jumpers, jackets, T-Shirts-for nothing just things I'd not worn for whatever reason that I thought may be of use to someone.

Is it just me/my community?

I used to be on Streetlife which had an element of anonymity to it and was quite useful. It then merged with Next Door which wanted all my details and I got the impression they would be public so I came off. The local Facebook page is hilarious bad enough.

Yes it’s a strange app, some of the posts are hilarious though, you have the regulars that post all the time, photos, lost cats and dogs, does someone know a cheap plumber (is there such a thing 😂) a mole catcher. Arguments often break out too, usually ending with one of the parties saying right I am deleting this app.

I left it last week, occasionally there was something useful on there but it's usually full of lost or found cats, complaints about the council, parking or a well known local drug user accosting people in various sites around the immediate area asking for money.

If my cat ever goes missing, I might rejoin it.

Blossomandbee · 14/12/2022 09:06

I haven't seen any nastiness on mine but it seems pretty pointless. It's all missing cats and a couple of old men, who I've and to mute due to endless notifications, who post constant unfunny meme's. Lots of people have complained about it but get ripped apart by the few who seem to like them.

Nextdoor is an absolute cesspit. The company refuse to do any moderation and palm it off on local residents who just get abused and threatened if they do any moderation.

Yes it's bonkers.

I saw one the other day asking for recommendations of a traditional pub with an open fire within walking distance of a particular area. I live in the particular area and I know there are really no traditional pubs in walking distance, but there are some gastropubs etc. So people were making suggestions of places, or saying well there's X but it's slightly further out - he got SO offended by people suggesting places and said either he didn't like them, or the comments were completely unhelpful because they weren't the answer he wanted and ended up shutting the post down. But there was no actually answer to his question as what he wanted just didn't exist. It was the most bizarre reaction I've seen to well- meaning people trying to help him out.

I keep thinking about coming off it as I find it so slow to load on my laptop that it's irritating to use, and I rarely read anything useful on there anyway. Plus it's the same old shite...

Dog shit. The thread starters always begin with “To the dog owner who left their dog poo on x street…blah blah”, as if a) the dog owner will read it, and 2) that they’ll have an epiphany and start picking up their dog's shit

Slagging off the local GP surgery/NHS. Usually from one particular woman who starts threads about it at least once a fortnight

Requests for trade recommendations, where you never know if it's genuine as people often recommend their mates or family members

Traders touting for business

Loose dogs found running in road/running across fields

Having a rant about the traffic lights

🙄
