Hot water bottle appreciation thread

Also electric blankets, heated throws and any other portable personal warming device. I have just one humble HWB but I was so glad of it this afternoon during my post-luncheon forty winks. It didn't stay hot for very long but that's likely my fault for not using hot enough water. Such a comfort during this Baltic spell 🙂.

I have a long, thin one which can take 2ltr of hot water. It's fab - fluffy cover and heat reflecting mattress topper means the water is still hot in the morning, and it's long enough that I can have it along my back and I'm Mrs Mosty Toasty. Also have an electric throw for the day. It's great for sitting still whilst WFH. My house is often around 12⁰c during the day. I love my personal heating devices!

Me too! It's amazing, my Husband bought me it at the weekend and it's wrapped round me now.

Thinkwicebeforeyouleavemylife · 13/12/2022 21:01

Oh yes I love a hot water bottle. I've had covid the last few days and been super poorly and shivery so it's been a massive comfort.

As other posters have said one of my favourite evening routines is to put one in my bed around half 9, once I get up to bed at just before 11 the bed is super toasty and the hot water bottle is stil lovely and warm (I've a fluffy cover on it so it retains heat pretty well)

My cat loves sleeping on top of a blanket placed over one too.

Oblomov22 · 13/12/2022 21:02

Oh god yes. I love getting into bed with my electric blanket. Makes me so happy. So comfy.

BrilliantGreenFlamingo · 13/12/2022 21:03

Love mine! I do fill it with boiling water tho. I don’t sleep with it, just on my lap for wfh. Maybe it’s not the best idea…. Does boiling water make then perish more quickly?

Oblomov22 · 13/12/2022 21:06

Dh has a dark pink one which has a blue fluffy cover that he made at school. So err 40+ years old then! I've been using it for 20. I've just read by a poster above, but they're only supposed to last two years. Oh dear.

WildRosie · 13/12/2022 21:06

Boiling water isn't good for HWBs. By all means boil the kettle but leave it to cool for a few minutes before using the water.

Just started using a HWB again for the first time since I was a child , and I'm loving it in bed each night.
I have my heated throw downstairs for watching tv, which is my best purchase ever.
Only problem with it is, as soon as it starts to heat up, I fall asleep!

FestivePinkFairy · 13/12/2022 21:08

I've been wfh with one on my lap for the last few days. It's in a teddy bear case with nursery rhymes on and was DS's when he was small. He's now 23 so I probably should buy a new one. Seems ok though.

MenopauseSucks · 13/12/2022 21:13

My hot water bottle has a lovely fleecy cover & is used most of the day when it's really chilly, shoved up under my jumper!
And yes, toasty in bed, great to cuddle or lie against & still warm in the morning.
Despite the advent of heated throws & electric blankets, Im still a big fan of my HWB!

(NB I don't use my HWB in a bed that has an electric blanket...).

myrtleWilson · 13/12/2022 21:15

when my sister was sick with cancer (now ok) I bought her a yuyu HWB - not at all cheap but very well made and it meant she could tie it round her waist to reduce pain. I am evangelical about yuyu now (but not on commission - I promise!!)

Anjelika · 13/12/2022 21:20

Have been a big fan of the HWB since I was a child. I put mine in the bed before taking make up off, cleaning teeth etc AND I wrap my PJs round it so when I come to put them on they are nice and toasty.

Have invested in a heated throw this winter and it's great but still use my HWB every night. I fill mine from my boiling water tap. Prior to that always used boiling water straight from the kettle.

Theraffarian · 13/12/2022 21:20

I love my HWB , but my old one burst the other night just after being put in our bed . No injuries, but my god the water went everywhere , soaking wet sheets, mattress topper, mattress and even upwards through the duvet. Inch long hole literally appeared from nowhere . But I do use a cover , so would recommend the occasional check to see if they look in good condition, as always fill mine with the cover on so rarely looked at the actual bottle .

Anyone old enough to remember Walter Hottle Bottle?

I sleep with two and a Spaniel.

I am !
As my DH says 'there are three of us in this marriage you, me and Walter'

H1Drangea · 13/12/2022 21:25

I don’t even know how old mine is, it has a purple fleece cover and is behind me on the sofa now , and will be accompanying me to bed later
I will just check it’s not wearing thin …. tomorrow

Fluffycloudland77 · 13/12/2022 21:30

I’m under the heated throw all day but I’ve put the electric blanket on the cats side of the bed. I’ll turn it down for overnight but she’s old.

Our Bengal had two hot water bottles in winter, one under the fleece on the windowsill so he could survey his domain in comfort and one in his cat bed.

Both were bought for my period pains but I gave up & bought a tens machine instead. I’d like to see a cat steal one of them off you.

cariaaad · 13/12/2022 22:43

They don't have an expiry date but they do have a manufacturer date. On the neck there is a circle with a number in the middle and 12 segments around it. One of the segments will have some dots in it. If you count the segments clockwise from 12 o'clock it tells you the month of manufacture. The number of dots tells you the week in the month.
The bottle I'm currently clutching was manufactured in the second week of august 2017. Technically due an upgrade if going by the guidance of 3 years. But I do love him even if he's getting on a bit!

Timeandtune · 13/12/2022 22:49

I love my HWB. It has a lovely furry/ fleecy cover and was £22 from Waitrose. Have used it several times a day and at night since this cold spell started.

VittysCardigan · 13/12/2022 22:54

I have 2, 1 standard & 1 long they were a god send when i had a reaction to my covid booster & had cartoon level chills & teeth chattering. They both have furry covers. I sit with my feet on one when i work from home.

H1Drangea · 13/12/2022 22:54

Thanks for that explanation @cariaaad

My loyal HWB was made first week in September 2011 , I’m sure it will last another few weeks 👍

UrsulaPandress · 13/12/2022 22:57

@stonebrambleboy 😀

grapehyacinthisactuallyblue · 13/12/2022 23:00

Mine has teddy bear cover. Can't live without it.

shunderland · 13/12/2022 23:03

I have an electric hwb and it's amazing. Takes 5 minutes to heat up and lasts all night. No danger of rubber eroding either

Allsnotwell · 13/12/2022 23:05

My dog has arthritis and has his own bottle - one of the long ones he curls up around it.

Just to say, I saw something on tv recently about hwb's having a shelf life and that they're more likely to leak when passed it. Apparently they have a raised circle on the inside of the top bit that tells you the shelf life of it, you'd have to google it as I can't remember how it works but I think they shouldn't be used passed 2.5-3 years ish.
Thought I'd mention it as you said you'd given it to your 3yr old and that you'd had it a few years.

Yes, the rubber perishes over time. It’s advised to replace them if over three years.
My daughters friend had a nasty incident with one two weeks ago. It burst, leaving her with second degree burns to her abdomen and tops of her thighs.
I don’t use them nowadays but did when a lot younger, I’m horrified now, thinking I back to filling them with boiling water and wrapping a towel round them. I sometimes woke up with blisters on my legs.

If your’e going to use one check the date inside the neck of the bottle.
I wouldn’t give one to a child.
Microwave heat pads are better.
