Hot water bottle appreciation thread

Also electric blankets, heated throws and any other portable personal warming device. I have just one humble HWB but I was so glad of it this afternoon during my post-luncheon forty winks. It didn't stay hot for very long but that's likely my fault for not using hot enough water. Such a comfort during this Baltic spell 🙂.

My main hot water bottle is 22 years old and I have used it every night in winter since I’ve had it. It’s cover is a teddy bear, so it’s so cuddly and well insulated. If under a duvet it stays hot for hours and hours, easily overnight. My more modern hot water bottles have fleece covers and only seem to stay warm about 3 hours.

LitralViolins · 13/12/2022 20:30

Love them, so comforting. I'm chilly and have period pain today so my HWB and ancient (but very warm) cellular granny blanket are doing double duty!

Thighdentitycrisis · 13/12/2022 20:32

Yesterday I saw a cover in a charity shop, made from a real sheep fleece (leather inside and very curly wool fleece outer to cuddle)

motleymop · 13/12/2022 20:32

I've never been able to relax with a hot water bottle - I just can't get away from thinking it will leak.

ClosedAuraOpenMind · 13/12/2022 20:32

mine has a sheepskin cover, which means it's soft and warm and sooo nice. the sheepskin is quite thick though so it takes a wee while for the heat to come through, so I put it in my bed then go off to bathroom to cleanse face, clean teeth, moisturise etc, then come back to toasty bed.
and it stays warm for ages too, it's fab
we had a power cut the other night and my first thought was 'how will i heat the water for my HWB' - in a pan on the hob by candlelight, obviously!

StillMedusa · 13/12/2022 20:33

I never sleep without mine.. even in summer (in the heatwave I didn't actually put hot water in it tho). Nothing beats the snuggly heat of a HWB :)
However I did have a nasty 2nd degree burn in September when mine burst.. (yes I filled it straight from the kettle.. my fault, but I've never had that happen before) Now I let the kettle cool for 15 mins .
I haven't found an expiry date though on my old, or new one! My old one was only a year old so think I was just unlucky!

Boating123 · 13/12/2022 20:33

Funnily enough I only thought to use my hot water bottle tonight. It had just been sitting in the airing cupboard for years (it must we well over it's shelf life). Can't find the fleecie cover, but a kid's pillow case is doing the job at the moment. My feet are under it in bed nice and warm.

Allsnotwell · 13/12/2022 20:34

You can get rechargeable heated clothing!

And microwaveable animals that do the same job.

Loads of options.

I can't find my HWB
Dunelm shuts at 9pm and is 5 mins away. Do I head there now?

Yes!

SliceOfCakeCupOfTea · 13/12/2022 20:35

I use mind daily. It's about 25 years old, same cover and I only ever put boiling water in. I think I found out this year or last that you're not supposed to put boiling water in and my mind is blown. I still do though

Wombat27A · 13/12/2022 20:35

I keep a kettle in my bedroom now for my hwbs.

Blocked · 13/12/2022 20:35

Do you know I have thought about starting a thread about how amazed I am at the heat a hot water bottle gives out. I spend every evening with my feet on a small one with a fluffy cover while I watch tv. Brilliant wee inventions.

ChicagoBears · 13/12/2022 20:35

I bought some for us yesterday (with fluffy covers). We pop them into bed whilst we’re brushing our teeth and when we get in to bed it’s lovely and toasty.

have also bought an electric throw which has been a godsend WFH.

Hopelesslove · 13/12/2022 20:37

Love love love my hwb!
I can remember sitting at my desk as a student with one on my lap to keep me warm when they turned all the heating off in halls of residence 🙄

TheOrigRights · 13/12/2022 20:37

Mine has a gorilla cover. He's my best mate.
His little monkey cousin lives with DS2.

I did have a HWB perish in bed once. Woke in the early hours thinking I'd wet the bed.

I also have one of those long ones with a knitted cover which was a present for someone that never made it due to covid restrictions. Shall I claim it for myself?

SmartWatch · 13/12/2022 20:38

I'm getting over a terrible flu/COVID whatever it was and have been in bed since Friday. I think the constant cycle of hot water bottles has actually kept me alive! Cannot live without them when ill

Cornelious · 13/12/2022 20:38

I've two right now. Not because house is cold but I'm not well so need it for my achy bones. They really do increase my happiness.

NuffSaidSam · 13/12/2022 20:38

I like a wheat bag. All the fun of a hwb but without the risk of leaks/burns.

TheOrigRights · 13/12/2022 20:38

I took it to the football last weekend (without gorilla), filled with the hot tap before the match. Natch!

Passanotherjaffacake · 13/12/2022 20:40

I bloody love my hottie, have always had at least one! Amazing for cold, period pain, UTI pain, ear pain and just a bit of comfort when out of sorts. I’m sure they even help with a teenage broken heart (not had one of those for a while mind)

feeling the new electric blanket love too!

lollipoprainbow · 13/12/2022 20:43

Adore them hotty botty as they are called in our house. Love the way you can move them to where you want them

NoodieRoodie · 13/12/2022 20:45

As a student in France over 20 years ago I remember my flatmates mocking me about my HWB. We lived in a building with very temperamental (aka shite) heating and they were amazed when I described it as like having a man in your bed but better as it only took up a tiny space! If I was teaching an early morning class I'd just the warm water to wash in, refill it and be back in a toasty hot bed by 11

Cookiedough41 · 13/12/2022 20:46

I've bought a microwavable, cherry stone, hot water bottle with a picture of my colleagues dog on it as my secret Santa present this year..I hope I get best present!

UrsulaPandress · 13/12/2022 20:48

Anyone old enough to remember Walter Hottle Bottle?

I sleep with two and a Spaniel.

WildRosie · 13/12/2022 20:56

I wish I'd invented the HWB and kept the rights. I could buy millions of them.

Does anyone have cats and dogs with their own personal warming devices? Or just cats and dogs who claim any such device as their own, regardless of actual ownership? Pictures!
