I've always thought my relationship was quite vanilla, however conversations with a couple of friends (like you do) have said they think I've had a kinky marriage

I think it's more of a mindset than specific actions. Vanilla sex is more about the relationship you have with your sexual partner, kinky sex is more about your feelings about the acts themselves. I think kinky sex is often porn inspired too. You could have vanilla blow job or a kinky blow job depending on your mindset.
