Help please. I don't know London and have never been on the underground.

I need to get to Jubilee Park in Canary Wharf by 9am one day next week, I won't be able to get to the hotel until about 9pm at night, I will need to park my car and leave it there whilst I go into CW or drive in is that crazy?

Please help, I have no idea

Where is your hotel and where are you travelling in from?

IntentionalError · 12/12/2022 21:01

The best way to get to Canary Wharf is by tube (Jubilee line) or DLR. CW & Heron Quays stations are a short walk from Jubilee Place. If your hotel is within walking distance of a tube or DLR station, you should have no problems.

DontWantToDance · 12/12/2022 21:04

Sorry haven't got a hotel booked, should have put that! Looking at Barking as it is affordable and parking. I have flexibility on the day but probably will be Sunday

If you are using the tube or DLR, you don’t need a ticket. Just use your debit or credit card to tap in & out at the ticket barriers. Watch what others do & copy them. The clever technology will work out the fares & charge your card.

Thank you, I shall look along this route.

That is really helpful information @IntentionalError I have only been on a train a handful of times, all very scary/exciting.

I stayed at Premier Inn Canning Town recently and it was spitting distance from the DLR station. A friend drove in to visit me and found parking close by (don't know how much it was though, sorry).

Canning Town is outside the emissions zone too, AFAIK.

FettleOfKish · 12/12/2022 21:10

And if it helps OP, London public transport is very unfamiliar to me too, but all the TFL staff I encountered in various stations were very helpful Smile

IntentionalError · 12/12/2022 21:12

No problem! 🙂

Once you find a hotel, Google maps will plan your journey from there to CW for you. Just enter your departure & arrival points and it will tell you which trains or buses to catch from where and work out any connections you need. You can also download the ‘TfL go’ app onto your phone which has maps & a journey planner.

FettleOfKish · 12/12/2022 21:13

Sorry OP, google suggests I meant it's outside the congestion charge zone, not the low emission zone!

Unicorn2022 · 12/12/2022 21:13

Barking is nowhere near Canary Wharf. It says it's in London but it's not really.

If you want a cheap hotel with parking right near Jubilee Park there is Britannia International Canary Wharf, or Tribe London Canary Wharf, both budget hotels walking distance to Jubilee Park.

OhOneOhTwoOhThree · 12/12/2022 21:16

If you don't want to drive all the way into London, can you say which direction you are coming from?

TakeYourFinalPosition · 12/12/2022 21:19

You might struggle with any type of cheap hotel near CW next week... or in easily commutable London at all; with the train strikes/Winter Wonderland/general London Christmas shopping and lights.

You might be best to find somewhere with a room rate that you don't mind paying; and then plan your routes from there - but as everyone has said, London public transport is quite well designed in terms of simplicity.

thebunnies · 12/12/2022 21:20

It’s pretty easy to park in CW but c £20-25pd - there are several car parks

DontWantToDance · 12/12/2022 21:27

@Unicorn2022 I'm off to Google them thanks. Barking just came up as parking and cheap and on route, then I realised I had no idea

@OhOneOhTwoOhThree I'm driving from The IOW but have a meeting near Brentford first (which has parking) and will finish about 7.30pm (I've also never driven in London!)

What about parking at Westfield Stratford. It's a good price for London. Less than 10 minutes on the tube to Canary wharf

RewildingAmbridge · 12/12/2022 21:41

Loads of parking in Canary wharf around £20/£25 , I've stayed at the point A in Canary wharf cheap and perfectly good. Don't stay in Barking!

DarkAndDusty · 12/12/2022 21:45

I think you really need to just stay at a hotel in Canary Wharf that has parking..

OhOneOhTwoOhThree · 12/12/2022 21:53

Or stay in Brentford and take public transport if you don't want to drive across London in the evening. Looks like you can get either the Piccadilly line (change at Green Park for the Jubilee line), or the District line (change at Westminster).

WibblyWobblyBoat · 12/12/2022 21:57

Depending on whether you have a low emission car etc, consider Canada Water and look for renting driveway parking near to the Jubilee line tube station there. Easy to get back home then via elephant and castle etc. just follow Google maps as you’ll be up to date with live traffic info too.

DontWantToDance · 12/12/2022 22:06

@FettleOfKish Canning Town would have been perfect but fully booked.

Westfield looks positive as reviews say it is well signposted and I am concerned about driving through London in the dark.

I will have to pay the LEZ.

@OhOneOhTwoOhThree that's the balance, less stressful driving but more stressful getting in on the morning but I wasn't sure where to change so that is helpful thank you

Don't go to Barking that's barking mad! Perhaps park in Lewisham and get the DLR, it takes about 15mins. Have a good trip and welcome to London.

DreamingOfAGreenChristmas · 12/12/2022 22:17

If you have found somewhere affordable with parking in Barking, Barking to CW is about 25 mins by train and DLR or tube.

You need to check whether it is a strike day, for trains and or buses

But no way would I want to drive from Brentford to Barking. London traffic is horrible. Congestion Charge. ULEZ…

Magicmonster · 12/12/2022 22:18

Hilton in rotherhithe is an option. Parking and then you can either get the boat over in the morning (takes 5 mins directly from outside the hotel) or bus to Canada Water and one stop on jubilee line if your prefer. Also outside congestion charge
