Help please. I don't know London and have never been on the underground.

I need to get to Jubilee Park in Canary Wharf by 9am one day next week, I won't be able to get to the hotel until about 9pm at night, I will need to park my car and leave it there whilst I go into CW or drive in is that crazy?

Please help, I have no idea

i have actually come back to this thread in excitement as a Londoner to check if OP is OK and isn't still planning to drive from far west to far east London!

thetimeisnow · 13/12/2022 06:46

We stayed at a Travelodge in Docklands, very handy for CW

DontWantToDance · 13/12/2022 07:33

@EthicalNonMahogany

Well I'm not now! Honestly I was about to book Barking but felt a bit overwhelmed by it all so just thought I'd see if anyone on here had any thoughts, blown away by the help and have now booked @JassyRadlett idea of Ealing.

Booked for this Sat but on a flexible basis as outside chance will have to push it to the first working week of Jan, I will update when I've been.

Thanks to everyone that helped, apologies to those that suggested with only half the details, visiting Brentford first was quite a major factor as it turned out.

Thanks to the pp for the city mapper tip

It's worth looking at Premier Inn and Premier Hub (not on sites like booking.com). They're a reasonable price, clean and tick the boxes in terms of a comfortable room and breakfast. I don't think many will have carparks though. If you're a tube stop or two away from where you need to be, that'll be walkable.

JassyRadlett · 13/12/2022 07:39

I feel like all those people who claim Londoners are unfriendly should hang out on the 'I'm travelling to London' threads sometimes, we may be reserved in person but my GOD we want to make sure people have a good experience in our city. Especially where public transport is concerned.

OP I hope it all works out perfectly for you!

OhOneOhTwoOhThree · 13/12/2022 19:31

Hope all goes well OP, and brilliant call about the Elizabeth line - I keep forgetting about it. Let us know how you get on!

Anewhoo · 13/12/2022 19:38

I agree, if you’re going to be in Brentford, and going back to IOW, then I’d stay west of London. 9am is a fine start time so getting across London won’t take more than an hour on public transport. If you’re going back to IOW the same day as your meeting, I’d suggest actually driving to a hotel near the M3, like Woking. You could train in to Waterloo and then get the jubilee straight to Canary Wharf. Then it’s an easier drive home when you’ve finished work.

SleekMamma · 13/12/2022 19:41

Another vote for using the citymapper app.
But also Google maps app also has very good directions on it.
It's much easier taking the tube than driving in London.

MrsWombat · 13/12/2022 19:51

I'm sure you're sorted, but just wanted to add that Abbey Wood is 10 mins away from Canary Wharf on the Elizabeth Line if being on the south side of the river helps with you getting back to the Isle of Wight. Plenty of parking and a 20 drive from the M25.

This!! From the IoW you’d be mental to drive anywhere near London. Seriously it’s scary if you are not a confident borderline aggressive driver. And if it’s in a train strike week can you not just postpone? Or do the meetings virtually?

Sorry can you explain this I don't understand.

Admittedly it doesn't take much.

I'm going to drive to Brentford on one day, then drive to the Premier Inn and stay overnight then leave the car in Ealing and get the train to CW, then get Elizabethan line back to Ealing and then drive home, leaving Ealing about 6pm.
Does that seem ok?

@VanCleefArpels sadly no other option. I have driven in city's but never London, this plan seems much better as less driving in London.

@Anewhoo if I was leaving Brentford earlier I think I would have done this but I'm leaving Brentford in the dark so this is less late night unfamiliar driving (I'm a confident motorway driver)

@DontWantToDance Just FYI, it's the Elizabeth line rather than the Elizabethan line. 😉

Pondere · 13/12/2022 23:20

Avoid Greenwich. It’s great for commuting into Canary Wharf and the City but the roads are a nightmare for driving.

Pondere · 13/12/2022 23:22

Oh just saw you’re not going for Greenwich anymore! Ignore me!

randomsabreuse · 13/12/2022 23:25

Premier Inn Beckton does the job. One change on DLR. Has a big car park and there's paid app based parking in the Asda opposite. Beckton is on the DLR (5 minutes walk door to door) while Beckton is accessible only by bus.

Wronglane · 13/12/2022 23:27

Londoners are far more friendly than many places I’ve been to in the UK

I grew up in poplar close by to canary and I'd suggest staying somewhere around here, this travel lodge is £100 per night and has parking that's £12 for 24 hours. Its a short walk to DLR (5 minutes) East India DLR which 4/5 stops to either Canary Wharf or Heron Quay stations to get to Jubliee place.

Also easy to get to by road, just off the A13.

I've saved this for future visits, problem this time is Saturday is train strike so planning on driving to Brentford Saturday then ElizaBETH (thanks, although Elizabethan sounds better 😆) to CW on Sunday

But Brentford to Woking is all out of London! You’ll be on the M25!

What? No! She has to get back to IOW!! Better to stay west and have an east commute the day she goes home!

I was being sarcastic - it’s a terrible idea!
