My dc's Nativity Play was a bit underwhelming

I am ONLY writing this here because it's so petty and I couldn't bear to say it IRL... but it was my youngest's nativity today and it was so disappointing.

They had 'written it themselves' and there were 3 Mary's and a Pokemon. The children basically stood in a line on the stage and jostled each other to have a go at the microphone. Barely any singing. It was ten minutes long and just... so underwhelming. My oldest did a lovely one about an angel, even the recorded Covid ones were nicer.

This is why you can’t go wrong with a traditional 20 min Nativity story and these songs
Little Donkey
Away in a Manger
and round it off with We wish you a Merry Christmas.

Absolutely, that’s all that’s needed, and it’s what parents expect.

We had upsie daisy angel.

basically an angel who couldn’t do anything write so all the other kids ridiculed her.

ds who’s 5 hated it, never did any singing etc and kept pulling faces on the stage

Whoopsadaisy Angel? My children did that 20 years and I can still sing the song! Well the chorus anyway 😁

Brainstorm23 · 12/12/2022 22:22

Our school just bought the script in from www.outoftheark.co.uk/baarmy-bethlehem.html

P1s and P3s together and it was frankly amazing..kids all learned massive speeches and no prompting at all. I was very impressed!

Hahaha my school did whoopsadaisy angel this year too! I have previously seen a Christmas nativity with aliens too…And of course the famous lobsters from love actually.

Sounds like everyone got a roughly equal part though OP, which is what most posters thought was important on a thread on here last week. ‘Don’t give the best kids the big parts every time, it’s not fair! Give everyone a chance!’ Turns out when everyone has an equal part it’s pretty crap and selecting the ones who speak clearly for the biggest roles makes sense.

MoanySloney · 12/12/2022 22:26

I would like to hear more about the Pokemon.

I sat through DS1s today. He played a Christmas Dinner.

SummerSazz · 12/12/2022 23:06

My niece was Ofsted inspector 3 in one memorable nativity...

My DC's school always did traditional with narrators for the main bits and one or two words from those on stage. We have great dvd's from them!

I'm crying and I've almost peed my pants. Thank you.

Mammyloveswine · 12/12/2022 23:31

Sound like a load of crap.. im a reception teacher abs know what works after 10 years of nativities!

forrestgreen · 12/12/2022 23:46

You used to have to buy the rights to a 'proper' story.

Not sure if that's still the same, obv an issue for budgets.

You can write your own nativity but that's time teachers don't have

Mariposista · 13/12/2022 00:02

It sounds rubbish OP. I agree you can’t beat something traditional and sweet.

ssd · 13/12/2022 00:08

3 marys and a pokemon

Sorry but thats made my day 😂

I’d rather underwhelming than overwhelming. I’ve got my DD’s nativity on Thursday and it’s an hour and a half long! They’re all 5-7. We’ve got the script and god knows why even with songs it’s going to take that long to get through.

I have this x2 Tuesday and Thursday nights!

QuestionableMouse · 13/12/2022 00:32

My nephew's school is having there's at 9:15 in the morning. They used to be on at a civilised time on an afternoon!

What role did the Pokemon play?

😂😂😂

chickywick6 · 13/12/2022 07:46

It sounds pretty funny tbh Op. a Pokémon sounds like a great addition.

Sorry OP, but on the other hand '3 Marys and a Pokemon' would be an excellent festive namechange.

x2boys · 13/12/2022 14:55

Why have three Mary's and a Pokemon in a nativity play?
I get that lots of schools don't want a traditional nativity play ,but why mix i t up.like that?

icebearforpresident · 13/12/2022 15:24

3 Mary’s and a Pokémon sounds amazing! DD’s is next week and her school is doing the exact same nativity as last year, and last year was pretty terrible. At least this year she’s a wiseman instead of a grumpy camel.

dottiedodah · 14/12/2022 09:12

Just half an hour or so is enough.I am assuming that even the Nativity has fallen prey to the great woke element .Surely Baby Jesus is the whole point ? Also Pokemon! where does he come in ! No point in it like this at all .

Fifiesta · 26/12/2022 09:42

I was very impressed with my grandchild’s nativity play. I had no lofty expectations pre watching it.
Pat yourselves on the back, The Globe Primary Lancing. ‘Shepherd Little’ who had a little trouble with the truth was very enjoyable.
Well done all.
