Comments on news reports are saying that five children/young teens have gone through ice into a lake and are in a critical condition.

Really hope that all involved make a full recovery

How can they not know if there were 4 or 6 children who fell in? Surely the kids have been accounted for by now, they would know if 2 children were still missing? Sad

Its just awful, the poor kids, and their poor parents, it is just unimaginable.

speakout · 12/12/2022 08:07

It is so sad.
I remember all the dangerous stuff I did as a child.
There was a fast flowing river near me, with a large pipe ( sewage?) crossed over the river.
As a 4 year old me and my friend would crawl along the pipe for fun, there was a 50 foot drop down to rocks and deep water.

I felt sick when I read about this last night. It’s a truly, truly heartbreaking tragedy. And a tragedy is what it is. No need to play the blame game. No need to finger point. It sounds like a very tragic accident. 6(?) boys of around 11 years old who would have woken up yesterday morning and whose hearts would have no doubt leapt when they looked out and saw snow. I remember those feelings. Rushing to get dressed, to knock for friends on my estate and to spend a full day out playing in the snow, throwing things on the ice. Not a care in the world. I’m sure it was the same for them. The innocence of childhood. Unfortunately it ended so so badly. No one has been ‘dumb’, no one has been ‘thick’. It sounds like a close knit community where children still play out together. Their community will be in so much pain now. What their parents must be going through is just unimaginable. It’s not gossiping to have empathy with the awful situation these poor people find themselves in. It’s human nature, because as someone else said ‘there but for the grace of god go i’. There’s no need to bicker about blame on this thread, let’s all just be grateful for what we are still lucky to have, and if it’s your thing, send up a prayer for these poor families, because God knows they are going to need it. Stay safe today everyone x

Lovely post x

Just had the same conversation with my DH. I suppose though any speculation of others missing need to be treated as a possibility.

the whole situation doesn’t bear thinking about.

They know, they just aren’t releasing the information

JustCakeInDrag · 12/12/2022 08:18

Of course they know. The policing priority is rightly for the families, not the public right now.

NeedAHoliday2021 · 12/12/2022 08:20

It sounds like one witness said 6 but others suggest there weren’t 6 so they don’t have the number confirmed. Sounds like the dc rescued are unable to provide the info due to their condition. Terribly sad. All my best wishes are with those families today hoping the dc all make a recovery.

How can one measure how thick the ice is though? I guess the ice from the deep freezes in canada etc accumulates over many days / weeks but I still don’t understand how people are able to measure it’s thickness (without breaking it and surely that would cause a bigger risk of it breaking unintentionally if walked on etc?)

With a drill

freyamay74 · 12/12/2022 08:21

From what I've read, I don't think they are searching for others?
Maybe there was originally a lack of clarity about how many went into the water.

OhChristmasTreeOhChristmasTreeFaLaLa · 12/12/2022 08:23

Maybe time to bring back those scary films they made us watch in the 70s and 80s, probably wouldn't be allowed now though. There isn't much point in blaming the parents here, although if they are as young as 9 they are far too young to be playing out unsupervised. Hopefully they are all OK and this will make schools and parents talk about the dangers of playing on frozen ponds and lakes. It was definitely something we were taught in the 80s.

Emergency services are still searching for two other children.

There is safety messaging but because there's no longer a limited pool of media everyone watches/listens to it will always be limited in impact. Ever since the invention of videos and the fast forward button! This is down to parents (or guardians) warning their children.

My dc us at university and they got a safety meeting sent by email to all students!

'Emergency services are still searching for two other children'

Oh, where/when was this reported? I thought it wasn't confirmed

Toddlerteaplease · 12/12/2022 08:37

Fingers crossed that the cold will have protected their brains. According to BBC news they are still critical.

YoSofi · 12/12/2022 08:37

@freyamay74 sorry I don’t know how to do clicky links.

I hope it’s not confirmed and no other children are missing but I imagine if they’re still searching 18 hours after the incident that they must have good reason to believe that they are.

I'm 29 and remember the videos in school, one was about a pylon electrocuting somebody flying a kite, one was crossing train tracks, road safety, water safety, ice and not to walk on frozen lakes, ponds, rivers etc. they were terrifying but did the job.

We also had extensive fire safety training, we went to our local fire department where there was a makeshift house and they taught us about the door handles being hot etc.

I think it's so important that we drum this into our children.

Praying for those involved and hope that the ones rescued pull through 🙏🏻 absolutely heartbreaking.

freyamay74 · 12/12/2022 08:42

@YoSofi
Oh the Daily Telegraph is behind a paywall and I don't read that.

Terribly tragic that two people are still missing along with those who are critically ill. I just can't imagine.

Yes, i feel like they must be pretty sure there are still children missing SadI was thinking though that by now the relevant parents/carers would know their child was still missing?

I read it was a recovery route being taken now...no longer search and rescue

those videos were terrifying weren't they! But they did drum it in. I remember the one about flying kites near to electricity lines and the ice (and how you had to lie down on the ice if you ever did try and rescue someone, not that you should). We lived near a series of canals so had all sorts of horror videos about falling in those and not rescuing your dog if it did etc. Stuff of nightmares.

freyamay74 · 12/12/2022 08:51

@BedTaker yes that's what confused me; I can understand a lack of clarity at the time about how many children went into the water but I would have thought by now, parents would have confirmed whether their children were accounted for. So as it's confirmed they are still searching for two, then this tragedy is on an even greater scale. So awful

allflownthenest · 12/12/2022 08:53

I hope they are all ok....

I live where we have had 2 shockingly serious incidents in less than a week we are all reeling here. So far the body count from the 2 looks like 9 with at least 4 more missing

Bunnycat101 · 12/12/2022 08:56

It must be heartbreaking for the families and it will be difficult for the surviving children. For so many of these cases it the ‘if only’ that must haunt you for years. The rescuers will have been through the mill last night as well.

YoSofi · 12/12/2022 09:05

I remember the video about lying down on ice if you were trying to rescue someone.

I spoke to my children this morning about the dangers and that even though it goes against every instinct, they must not go into water or on to ice to help someone in trouble and to call for help instead.
