Anyone fancy a fanfiction thread...

For a cold, Sunday afternoon?

Writers - bemoan your lack of comments, your mounting WIPs and the fact that none of them ever seem to just bloody write themselves (mine isn't - and I'm not going to write it, so I don't know what it thinks is going to happen).

Readers - bemoan the lack of updates for the fic you're reading, or that the one you were loving turned out to have been abandoned in 2013, or that everything was going swimmingly until some surprise mpreg happened.

And of course, it's not all bad - tell me the fic you're most proud of writing, or the favourite thing you read all year. Open to all celebrations and commiserations.

I'm talking a thread on trope talk, stats talk, reviews, posting snippets of what you're writing and disecting fandom drama. Is FFN about to die? Is there anything on Wattpad worth reading - and can anyone over the age of 14 actually navigate it?

So, throw your hair up in a messy bun, try not to get sold to a band by your crack addict mother, and come and talk about it all - the highs, the lows, and the tongues battling for dominance.

All lovers of fanfic - and those just fanfic curious (and those who are fanfic horrified) - welcome! Tell me all about what you're currently writing/ reading.

Ah, my people Grin

I used to live and breath fanfic and am currently going through something of a renaissance with it. I'm ploughing through All The Young Dudes (extremely long and finished, very enjoyable WolfStar slow burn on Ao3!) and having Many Thoughts And Feelings.

Having not written fanfic in a very very long time since reading the Raven cycle I'm starting to plan something revolving around HP werewolves heavily featuring Lupin and Bill Weasley and I'm very happy about it Grin

I love fanfic. Writing and reading.

Mostly write in the Dragon Age and Mass Effect video game fandoms, with a dash of Star Wars and maybe a few other bits if I’ve been inspired.

I'd be interested to know what you're thinking about ATYD @katewitch I read it this summer over about a week (I had to break my "don't read any fics that shit on JKR" rule to read it, but I wanted to see what the fuss was about). How far through are you?

I had a browse through Archive of our Own about a month ago. Loved a completed work that was a blend of Harry Potter and Killing Eve. Think it was called Muggle Born. Searched for others that combined these two but was quite thin on the ground.

This thread has given me a strong waft of nostalgia! I was a reasonably BNF back in LJ days in LOTR RPF, with the quite the following.

I dropped out of that world completely in about 2005, and have only the blurriest idea what happened to cause the demise of Livejournal, and where fandom now exists? Are people still even writing LOTR RPF? Are any of my fellow-writers still alive???

itssquidstella · 18/12/2022 15:49

@PortableVirgins oooh I bet I know who you are, I was all over that fandom 2003-6ish!

chineapplepunks · 18/12/2022 15:55

I don't think I've ever felt such creative freedom when writing fanfic! I was quite well known in my fandom and I loved interacting with readers!

My OTP was Viggo M and Sean Bean, but I also wrote the hobbit actors a bit. Did you write LOTR?

itssquidstella · 18/12/2022 16:57

@PortableVirgins I wrote a lot of crack fic and was part of a briefly high-profile rpg around the time the third film came out (I was part of the anti-tin hat brigade, if that rings any bells). Also wrote a bit in The Faculty, HP and Supernatural, and one reasonably widely-read LotR RPF alternative universe thing (can't remember the fandom term now) set in Victorian London.

What was your LJ name, if you don't mind sharing?

I was childeproof on LJ.

@Teaspooned I’m pretty sure we had acquaintances in common 😬

I went through a massive phase of writing fanfic after I got to the end of binge-watching a show and felt a massive hole in my life. Fanfic filled it. I was actually quite popular in my fandom at the time and I am acutely aware that I left one unfinished but it's been 5 years and I just don't think I have it in my to go back to it. But I still get comments and emails asking me to 😶
