Every year I do it and he shows no interest. I sometimes wonder if I wasn't here would he even put one up at all.

All done together with kids, yes.

Is he helpful usually, or is this par for the course with him?

fitflopqueen · 11/12/2022 08:40

Real tree here, always used to go and get together with husband and kids, then much sweating and swearing 🤬 to be heard from the garage whilst putting on the base. Son has taken over past 2 years. Now both of them are away with work so daughter and I will be going to buy and erect it today, the base is easier now! Will decorate once the branches have dropped a bit so tomorrow’s job.

Inasec24 · 11/12/2022 08:41

He carries it home, then all 4 of us Decorate it. DD job to put the star on the tree and DS job to switch the lights on. At least 1 but normally 2 arguments happen during the process. I move tinsel etc once kids are in bed.

My DH does the majority of putting decorations up as he has an eye for detail.

FallingsHowIFeel · 11/12/2022 08:42

Yes, everyone helps here. It’s fun if everyone helps but would be a chore if it was done alone. Last year, I had to be away for a week at the start of December to help out a friend. I came back to the trees up and whole house decorated by my partner and kids.

Hoppinggreen · 11/12/2022 08:42

DH goes the bit with the stand and drill and then brings the Decs down from the loft. Then I do the fun part

purplerainlondon · 11/12/2022 08:42

I did mine whilst my fiancé was watching the football game last night Football

GiveMyHeadPeaceffs · 11/12/2022 08:42

My DP does all the Christmas decorating because I absolutely hate doing it. I love the end result but I see it as another chore that needs done whereas he loves doing it.

kitcat15 · 11/12/2022 08:43

My DP gets them out of the loft... purs them back in...thats his contribution....my DD and eldest GD do all the decorating. ..I made a Christmas wreath

Floydthebarber · 11/12/2022 08:43

He puts the lights on but that's it as I like to do it myself. If he wanted to wouldn't stop him but would be secretly very annoyed! The dc are old enough to help now and I just want to do it by myself!

WithIcePlease · 11/12/2022 08:45

We have 2 or 3 trees usually, occasionally 4. He does them all with DD's and takes them all down

Iknowhim · 11/12/2022 08:45

Mine does most of it tbh. We choose the tree together, we choose a couple of new baubles each year.
We also plan gifts etc together.
We do a lot together like meal planning, cooking,

For us, life and our home etc is a joint effort.

I get there's stuff that some people just aren't interested in and defer to their partner but I couldn't be with someone who was totally disengaged from everything and just left me to make everything lovely.

Slimjimtobe · 11/12/2022 08:46

Yes he collects it (real tree) and saws off the bottom and also hangs garlands with cable ties as he is better than me

but I buy all the bits and pieces and decorate (he would never ever think of baubles or whatever)

Bumpsadaisie · 11/12/2022 08:46

DH leads the expedition to choose and transport the tree home and to set it upright in place. This often requires chopping the trunk down a bit.

Then kids and I decorate while he has a lie down after his fights with the tree. Then when ready kids love to turn lights of and get him to come down and behold the finished spectacle.

Ragwort · 11/12/2022 08:46

My DH always goes and buys the tree, wrestles it home and puts it in the stand ... which is not easy. (And he sorts out taking it out and whatever you do these days to recycle the tree). Then I put the decorations on. He does outside lights ... makes us sound a very traditional couple but it works for us, and yes, I was born in the 50s Grin. And he is very appreciate and compliments me on the decorations. One of the nicest things he does is to switch the lights on early .. he is usually up before me but knows I like to come down and have a morning coffee by the tree in the run up to Christmas.

KatMcBundleFace · 11/12/2022 08:46

Mine got it inside the house, leaving a trail of soil and needles and then sat in the middle of the chaos watching football..... does that count?

Wheretheskyisblue · 11/12/2022 08:46

DH normally saws the bit off the bottom of the tree to help the water uptake but leaves the rest to me. This year I did it though becuase it was cold outside and he had the dressing gown of doom on.

Itsthewhitehat · 11/12/2022 08:48

My dp isn’t bothered at all and would be fine without them.

Last year me and the kids (10 & 17) put the tree up. This year dd was at uni so me dp and ds did it.

Dp will usually do the lights around the window in the living room and some finishing touches.

Tbh, it was easier with the 2 kids last year. Do and ds seemed to enjoy having an in-depth discussion on where each bauble should go.

ChessieDarling · 11/12/2022 08:49

He does. We both hate doing it but love it when it’s done if that makes sense. Doesn’t help that we have more than one tree. He always does the star/angel on top with our DC. I’d rather he just did it all 😂

PortiasBiscuit · 11/12/2022 08:51

DH puts it up and puts the lights on, I decorate it.
We are putting lights on the outside tree today together. Neighbours let slip that they look forward to this event every year, as we bicker and it’s seemingly hilarious.
It is good to have traditions.

MassiveSalad22 · 11/12/2022 08:51

I haven’t even touched the tree this year - husband and 5 year old went to pick it, DH always trims the end and puts it up, and when it came to decorating it DH and the kids were so into it I was just getting the decs out of their packing and realised I didn’t put a single one on the tree!

FancyFanny · 11/12/2022 08:52

We have a real one - DH always comes and chooses it and helps put in in the tree holder (it's definitely a two-person job). I decorate it with DD He tidies away at the end and hoovers up the the needles Xmas Smile

roundtable · 11/12/2022 08:54

Dh does it with the kids. Sometimes done when I'm out or when I'm doing something else.

We love all things Christmas though. Christmas was always a bit depressing for my family growing up, for various reasons that I won't go into, so we try to have as much fun as possible. It's such a great time of year when the children aren't bickering

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 11/12/2022 08:54

Mine drives the fresh tree home, sorts it into its stand and gets the Dec's from the loft.

Dc decorate.

FourTeaFallOut · 11/12/2022 08:54

DH gets everything out the loft and does the outdoor lights, ds1(15) puts the tree together, I do the lights and tinsel and I stand aside while all the kids put the baubles on. Takes me 10 minutes max to do my bit.
