Create a playlist. Strong female singers

I'm putting together a playlist and looking for suggestions
Female singers
I like belting it out in the car when I'm alone
My 2 favourite singers are Mary Coughlan and Kirsty MacColl. Florence and the machine, 4 non blondes and Alanis Morissette are sounds I like and sing along with
Can you add anything?

OP posts:
UsingChangeofName · 09/12/2022 00:17

Alison Moyet
Adele
Cher
Whitney Houston
Tina Turner
A little bit of Lulu, with 'Shout'
Leona Lewis
Annie Lennox
Keala Settle
Aretha Franklin

I'd put people like Carole King, Karen Carpenter, and Dolly Parton right up there with fantastic female singers, but probably not "belters" in the same way for turning up the volume and driving to

Grace Jones. Strongest woman ever. Xx

Starlitexpress · 09/12/2022 00:42

Jeen O'Brien, Canadian, particularly like the album Giftshop..........though good luck trying to get Alexa to play her as it is such a common name and definitely not my accent.

If you like indie, some good women fronted bands are sleeper, elastica, echobelly, yeah yeah yeahs and gossip

JuneOsborne · 09/12/2022 07:20

Really pleased to see Beth Hart getting a shout out. Her stuff with Joe Bonamassa on guitar is out of this world.

Also pleased to see some love for Natalie Merchant.

I came on to suggest some newer stuff, but see someone else has mentioned Yola, my current favourite: can't get enough of her at the minute. She sings on the Highwomen song. Check it out. It's my current 'on repeat' song.

And finally, the War and Treaty. What a story too.

Brefugee · 09/12/2022 08:11

my DH loves Beth Hart and would like to add Joanne Shaw Taylor to the list

Glad to see a lot of my favourites in here, Kiki Dee in particular is horribly underrated. First white person (woman?) to sign to Mowtown. Extraordinary voice.

Two new discoveries for me this year (they were doing backing vocals to my favourite band) are Leah Flannigan and Liz Stringer.

Nina Hagen does a batshit brilliant cover of Persona Jesus
if you like a bit of boppy french stuff Je Veux by Zaz is great
Janis Ian is just about retiring now but she has a great back catalogue
Melanie is a forgotten female voice from the late 60s/early 70s

Strong female? Pussy Riot do actually have a couple of bangers in their repertoire

something to lift your mood? Pata Pata by Miriam Makeba

Elkie Brooks has a lovely voice.
Has anyone mentioned Pat Benetar? (guilty pleasure for me)
and Sam Brown had a couple of good albums.

AnImaginaryCat · 09/12/2022 08:17

Lots mentioned already plus the Cowboy Junkies and the Highwomen (don't think they have been mentioned yet).

OP you know you've now going to have to make and share a playlist on Spotify now 😁

Brefugee · 09/12/2022 08:21

also if you want to include cover bands, the Iron Maidens are stunningly fantastic as are Black Sabbitch

Brefugee · 09/12/2022 08:21

a MN female playlist on Spotify would be fab.

TheOnlyMrsW · 09/12/2022 08:24

Came on to say Halestorm but noticed some have already mentioned the wonderful Lzzy!!!! Beth Blade and the Beautiful Disasters plus Within Temptation are worth a listen too.......love your idea @Brefugee, I'd play that all day long!

Kazzyhoward · 09/12/2022 08:38

Physical (Olivia Newton John)

brianixon · 09/12/2022 08:42

My current favourite is "somewhere along the road"

RobotandPenguin · 09/12/2022 08:51

So many great artists mentioned. I would add Helen Reddy - I Am Woman.

Also I'm really into Japanese Breakfast at the moment - Michelle Zauner has a great voice and some wonderful lyrics. Her book Crying in H-Mart is also beautiful.

Brefugee · 09/12/2022 08:54

gosh love Hellen Reddy. Angie Baby is such a shocking song.
